Jewellery during pregnancy: the short answer
Wearing jewellery during pregnancy is generally fine, but your body changes so much that comfort and practicality matter more than usual. The main things to watch are rings as fingers swell, long or heavy necklaces as the bump grows, and hospital or scan rules that typically require you to take metal jewellery off.
For many Indian women, jewellery carries meaning that goes beyond style. A mangalsutra, toe rings, a wedding band or the gold bangles from a godh bharai or baby shower can feel like part of who you are. Nothing here suggests you stop wearing them. It is about adjusting how and when you wear each piece across the three trimesters, so that you stay comfortable, avoid a stuck ring, and are ready when the hospital bag needs packing. Always follow advice from your own doctor, who knows your health history.

Why fingers, wrists and ankles swell in pregnancy
Swelling, called oedema, is very common in pregnancy, particularly in the later months. The body holds more fluid and blood volume increases, and gravity pulls some of that fluid into the hands, feet and ankles. Indian summers and monsoons make it more noticeable, as do long days on your feet, salty snacks and sitting for hours at a desk or on a commute.
Swelling tends to build through the day and settle overnight, which is why a ring that feels fine in the morning may feel tight by evening. Toe rings, anklets and kadas can also become snug. Mild, gradual swelling is usually considered a normal part of pregnancy, but sudden or severe swelling of the face, hands or feet, especially with headaches or vision changes, is something to report to your doctor promptly, as it can signal a condition that needs checking. Your jewellery can actually serve as an early clue: if a ring that was loose last week suddenly feels tight, mention it at your next appointment.
When to remove rings, and how to tell it is time
There is no fixed week when every woman must take her rings off. Some remove them early in the second trimester; others wear them comfortably until delivery. The useful test is simple: can you twist the ring and slide it over the knuckle without a struggle at the end of the day? If it leaves a deep red groove, feels tight after a walk, or needs soap to come off, it is time to stop wearing it on that finger.
Removing a ring early is far easier than removing a stuck one late in pregnancy, when swelling is at its peak and you may have less patience for elevation and lubrication. Try your rings every few days as a habit, perhaps when you apply moisturiser at night. If you have a solitaire or a ring with a raised setting, also consider that a bump and a changed sense of balance make knocks against door frames and kitchen counters more likely, which is another reason to rest delicate pieces for a while.
Wearing your wedding ring on a chain instead
Many women keep their engagement or wedding ring close by threading it on a chain and wearing it as a pendant. It is a sweet, practical choice that keeps the ring safe and visible without squeezing a swollen finger. Choose a chain sturdy enough to carry the ring's weight, because a very fine chain can snap or stretch over time. A medium-weight cable or rope chain in gold, or a sturdy sterling silver chain for silver rings, is a sensible base.
Keep the length comfortable, usually somewhere around the collarbone to just below it, so the ring does not swing into the bump or catch while you sleep on your side. Check the clasp regularly and be aware that a solitaire may scratch against other necklaces if you layer. Some women prefer a simple slim band for daily wear in a larger size and keep the precious ring safe at home. Either way, having a dedicated chain ready means you are not tempted to leave the ring loose in a handbag or on a bathroom shelf.
Mangalsutra comfort through the trimesters
For married Indian women, the mangalsutra is often worn daily, and many prefer not to remove it at all. As the bump grows, a long traditional mangalsutra that sits at the waist or chest can swing forward, catch on clothing and press uncomfortably when you lie down. Heavier pendants may also feel more noticeable on the neck as your posture changes.
A lighter, shorter mangalsutra can be a good companion for pregnancy and the newborn months that follow. Shorter lengths stay clear of the bump and of a baby's grabbing hands during feeding. Black bead strands strung on thread can stretch with constant wear, so check the stringing. Families differ on customs about removing a mangalsutra, and many hospitals ask for it to be taken off before surgery, so it can help to discuss this with elders and your doctor beforehand rather than in a rush on the day.
Scans, tests and hospital rules on jewellery
Routine pregnancy ultrasound scans do not usually require you to remove most jewellery, though belly piercings or long necklaces may need to be moved out of the way. MRI is different: because it uses a powerful magnet, patients are typically asked to remove all metal jewellery, including rings, bangles and piercings, before entering the scanner room. X-rays, if needed, may also require removing pieces near the area being imaged.
For delivery, and especially for a planned or emergency caesarean section, hospitals commonly ask you to remove rings, bangles, chains, earrings and toe rings. Reasons typically include swelling during labour, monitors that clip onto fingers, the use of electrical surgical equipment and infection control. Some hospitals allow a mangalsutra or a thread to be taped; others do not. Rules vary between hospitals, so ask at your antenatal visits what your hospital requires. Leave valuable pieces at home and give anything you must remove to a trusted family member, not a hospital locker.
A little planning makes the day calmer. When you pack your hospital bag, include a small zip pouch labelled with your name so that anything removed in the labour room goes straight into it, rather than into a pocket or a tray that gets cleared away. Decide in advance who will hold it, perhaps your mother, sister or husband, and tell them what is inside. If you wear a nose pin or several ear piercings, ask whether the hospital accepts small plastic retainers in place of metal, as some do and some do not. Taking off rings a few weeks before your due date also avoids a last minute struggle with swollen fingers when contractions have already begun.
Skin sensitivity and choosing metals that feel kind
Hormonal changes can make skin more sensitive in pregnancy, and some women notice itching or redness from jewellery they have worn for years without trouble. Fashion pieces with base metals or nickel are the usual culprits. If you develop a rash where a necklace or earring sits, swap to higher purity pieces such as BIS-hallmarked gold, platinum or 925 sterling silver, and keep jewellery and skin clean and dry, especially in humid weather when sweat sits under chains.
Choose smooth designs with no sharp edges or protruding prongs, both for your comfort and for cuddling a newborn later. Small studs, slim bangles that open with a clasp rather than needing to be squeezed over the hand, and adjustable bracelets are all easier to manage when your hands are puffy. If a rash persists, see a doctor rather than self-treating with strong creams.
Gifting jewellery for a baby shower or new mother
Jewellery is a lovely gift for an expectant or new mother, from a godh bharai present to a push gift after the baby arrives. Practical choices make the gift more likely to be worn. Think of a delicate pendant on a sturdy chain, small studs, an adjustable bracelet, or a birthstone piece chosen once the baby's birth month is known. Avoid rings unless you know her current size, as it is likely to change after delivery.
Many new mothers find fingers return to their pre-pregnancy size within weeks or months, but not always. Offering to have a ring resized later, or gifting a voucher, is thoughtful. Check exchange and resizing policies with the seller, since these typically vary.
After the birth, the newborn months bring their own jewellery lessons. Babies grab at anything shiny, so long chains, hoops and jhumkas can be pulled hard, and a tiny hand can get tangled in a fine chain. Rings with prongs can scratch delicate skin during bathing and changing. Many mothers settle into a simple routine of small studs, a short mangalsutra or pendant, and a smooth band once fingers have settled, saving statement pieces for outings. It is a phase, and your festive jewellery will be waiting when you are ready for it again.
