Jewellery insurance India basics in two minutes
Jewellery insurance India basics start with one fact: most standard home policies give jewellery little or no cover unless you add it specifically. You can usually insure jewellery either through a home contents policy with a jewellery or valuables add-on, or through a standalone jewellery policy that some insurers and jewellers offer. Either way, you will need invoices or a valuation certificate, and the sum insured should be updated as gold prices change.
This guide explains the main types of cover, the paperwork insurers typically ask for, the exclusions people miss, and why a policy taken out five years ago may leave you badly underinsured today. Specific terms typically vary by insurer and policy, so treat this as a framework for asking the right questions, not as advice on any particular product.

Why your household jewellery may be uninsured right now
Many Indian families hold a significant share of their savings in gold jewellery, often kept at home in an almirah or locker, and assume it is protected. In practice, a basic home building policy covers the structure, not contents, and many contents policies cap or exclude jewellery, cash and valuables unless declared. Some policies cover jewellery only while it is inside a locked safe at home.
Bank lockers are another common assumption. Banks generally do not insure the contents of lockers, and their liability for loss is typically limited by their own terms and applicable banking rules. Check your locker agreement, and do not assume that keeping jewellery in a bank locker means it is insured.
So the first practical step is to read the policy documents you already hold and look for words such as valuables, jewellery, precious metals and per-item limit. You may find you have less cover than you thought.
Standalone jewellery policies versus home contents add-ons
A home contents policy with a jewellery add-on is the most common route. You declare jewellery as part of household contents, sometimes listing high-value items individually. The advantage is convenience and a single premium. The drawbacks can include per-item or overall limits on jewellery, cover only at your home address, and conditions on how jewellery is stored.
A standalone jewellery policy focuses only on jewellery and may be offered by general insurers or arranged through some jewellers at the time of purchase. These policies may provide wider cover, for example while you are wearing the jewellery outside the home or travelling, and may list each item with its description and value. Some jewellers offer complimentary cover for a limited period after purchase; check what it covers and when it ends.
Neither route is automatically better. Compare the scope of cover, where it applies, the excess or deductible, how claims are settled, and the documentation required. Ask the insurer directly whether cover applies while wearing pieces outside, during travel within India and abroad, and in bank lockers.
Invoices, valuation certificates and photographs
Insurers typically want proof of ownership and value. For new jewellery, the GST invoice from the jeweller is the strongest evidence, since it usually records weight, purity, stone details and price. For hallmarked gold, keep a note of each HUID code. For diamond pieces, keep the grading report from a lab such as IGI, GIA or SGL if one exists.
Inherited or older jewellery often has no invoice. In that case, insurers may accept a valuation certificate from a registered valuer or a reputable jeweller, describing each item, its gross and net weight, purity, any stones and an assessed value on a given date. Requirements typically vary by insurer, so ask what format they accept before you pay for a valuation.
Photograph every piece clearly from more than one angle, next to a ruler or coin for scale, and store the images with scanned invoices and certificates in a secure cloud folder. If your home is burgled or flooded, the paper copies might be lost along with the jewellery.
Exclusions and conditions to read carefully
Exclusions typically vary by insurer, but a few themes come up repeatedly. Normal wear and tear, gradual damage and cleaning or repair accidents are often excluded. Loss of a stone because a prong wore out over time may be treated as wear and tear rather than an insured event. Damage from improper storage can also be excluded.
Mysterious disappearance is a key phrase. It refers to jewellery that simply cannot be found, with no evidence of theft or a specific incident. Some policies exclude it entirely, while others cover it only under certain conditions. Since many real-world losses are exactly this, such as a missing earring after a wedding, check this clause before buying.
Other conditions may include requirements that jewellery above a certain value be kept in a safe when not worn, that theft be reported to police within a set time, or that losses outside the home be covered only when the jewellery was being worn. There may also be a deductible on each claim. Note these down and ask questions in writing so the answers are on record.
Revaluation as gold prices change
Gold prices in India move over time, and over several years the replacement cost of a gold set can change substantially. If your sum insured is fixed at the value on your original invoice from years ago, a claim may be settled on that lower figure, or reduced proportionately under an underinsurance clause, depending on the policy terms.
Revisiting values every year or two, or whenever there is a large shift in gold prices, keeps cover realistic. Ask your insurer how they want revaluation done: a fresh valuation certificate, an updated declaration, or an automatic adjustment. Diamond and gemstone values do not track gold, so a ring's value may move differently from a plain gold chain.
Also ask how claims are settled. Some insurers replace the item through a jeweller, some pay the assessed value, and some deduct making charges or apply depreciation. Knowing this in advance prevents unpleasant surprises.
Making a claim: what usually happens
If jewellery is stolen, file a police complaint quickly and get a copy of the FIR or complaint receipt. Inform your insurer within the period stated in the policy, which can be short. Provide the policy number, a description of each item, invoices or valuation certificates, photographs and the police report.
For damage, insurers may ask for the piece to be inspected or for a repair estimate from a jeweller. Keep any broken parts or loose stones safely. The more organised your records, the faster and smoother the process tends to be.
Be truthful and precise in your claim. Describe each piece exactly as it appears on the invoice or valuation, and do not guess weights or values. If you are unsure of something, say so and provide the documents you have. Inconsistencies between the claim form, the police report and your records are a common cause of delays.
Keep a written log of every call and email with the insurer, including dates, names and reference numbers. If the settlement offer seems lower than expected, ask for the calculation in writing, showing how the value was assessed and whether any depreciation, making-charge deduction or underinsurance reduction was applied. If you remain unhappy, insurers have a grievance process, and the policy document should explain how to escalate a complaint.
A simple plan to get covered
List every piece worth insuring, gather invoices, HUID numbers and certificates, and get valuations for inherited items. Photograph everything. Compare at least two insurers on scope, exclusions, claim settlement and cost, and ask clear questions about wearing, travel and mysterious disappearance. Set a reminder to revalue regularly, and add new purchases to your policy as soon as you buy them, especially around Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya or a family wedding.
Think about priorities too. You may not need to insure every small pair of silver studs, but a bridal set, a solitaire or a heavy gold necklace usually deserves specific cover. Grouping items by value helps you decide what to list individually and what can sit under general contents. Share the location of your documents with a trusted family member, so that a claim can be made even if you are travelling or unwell when something happens. Finally, read the renewal notice each year instead of auto-renewing without a glance. Insurers sometimes revise terms, limits or exclusions at renewal, and a quick comparison with last year's wording shows whether your cover has quietly changed. Ten minutes of reading once a year keeps your protection matched to what you actually own.
