KDM gold vs 916 gold in plain words
KDM refers to an old soldering method that used a cadmium alloy to join gold parts, while 916 refers to purity: 91.6 percent gold, which is 22 karat. They are not competing types of gold. Today, the reliable label to trust is the BIS hallmark showing 22K916 along with a six-digit HUID, not the word KDM.
Many shoppers still hear the comparison of KDM gold vs 916 gold at jewellery shops, especially from older relatives. The confusion is understandable because both terms were used heavily in marketing during the period when hallmarking was optional. This guide untangles the two terms and explains what you should look for instead.
By the end you will know why KDM is mostly a historical term, why 916 alone is not enough, and how to verify purity properly.
You may also hear related phrases such as hallmarked 916 KDM, pure KDM or full KDM in older shops. These combinations blend a purity claim with a soldering claim, and they were especially common in the years before HUID. Treat them as conversational descriptions rather than certifications, and always rely on the official hallmark to confirm what you are paying for.

What KDM originally meant
Making jewellery involves joining many small parts with solder, an alloy that melts at a lower temperature than the gold. In the past, some goldsmiths used solder that contained a high share of copper and other metals, which could lower the overall purity of the finished piece.
Cadmium-based solder became popular because it allowed joins to be made with solder of higher gold content, keeping the final piece closer to its intended purity. Jewellery made this way was marketed as KDM, a phonetic shorthand for cadmium. For a time, KDM became a selling point that suggested better purity.
However, cadmium fumes released during soldering are toxic, posing serious health risks to artisans. As awareness grew, the use of cadmium declined, and modern jewellery manufacturing uses safer alternative solders that can still achieve the required purity.
Before the widespread use of better solders, a long chain or intricate necklace could contain many solder joints, each slightly lower in purity than the main gold. Added together, these joints pulled the average purity of the piece down. This was one reason why two necklaces sold as 22K could test differently, and why buyers looked for reassurance through terms like KDM.
What 916 means
916 is a fineness number that indicates 91.6 parts of gold per hundred, the standard for 22 karat gold. It is calculated as 22 divided by 24. Under the BIS hallmark, 22 karat jewellery is marked as 22K916, which tells you both the karat and the fineness.
Before hallmarking was widespread, some jewellers stamped 916 on items themselves. Without independent testing, that stamp was only a claim. Some pieces genuinely met the standard; others did not. This is why 916 alone, without the BIS logo and HUID, should not be treated as proof.
Today, a piece stamped with the BIS logo, 22K916 and a HUID has been tested by a BIS-recognised hallmarking centre. That combination is the meaningful assurance.
It helps to understand the full set of standard fineness numbers. 22K is 916, 18K is 750, 14K is 585, and higher grades exist for specialised items. If someone tells you a piece is 916 but the hallmark shows 750, the piece is 18K. Matching these numbers takes only seconds and prevents costly misunderstandings.
Why KDM is not a purity guarantee
KDM describes a soldering technique, not a tested purity. A piece could be labelled KDM and still fall below 22K, or could have been made with safer solder and meet full purity without any KDM label. The term says nothing reliable about the final gold content.
Some shops still use KDM in conversation as a synonym for good-quality 22K, out of habit. There is no harm in the word itself, but you should not pay extra for it or accept it in place of a hallmark. Ask instead to see the BIS hallmark and verify the HUID.
If an older bill describes jewellery as KDM, treat it as historical documentation. At exchange time, the jeweller will test the actual purity regardless of the label.
Health and ethical side
Cadmium exposure is linked to serious health problems, and goldsmiths working in small, poorly ventilated workshops were most at risk. The decline of cadmium soldering is an improvement for artisan health. Choosing jewellers who follow modern safety practices supports better working conditions.
For buyers, cadmium in finished jewellery is not normally a concern once the piece is made, but it is one more reason the industry has moved on. Modern alloys and solders let manufacturers meet purity standards without hazardous materials.
When you see KDM promoted aggressively today, it is reasonable to ask the jeweller what soldering method they actually use and whether the piece is BIS hallmarked.
Many industry bodies, artisans and responsible jewellers have worked to improve conditions in manufacturing clusters, including better ventilation and safer materials. As a buyer, asking about manufacturing practices sends a signal that consumers care, which encourages more businesses to invest in safer workshops for the craftspeople behind every piece.
How hallmarking replaced old labels
The BIS hallmark system provides independent verification. A registered jeweller sends jewellery to an assaying and hallmarking centre, which tests it and marks it with the BIS logo, purity grade and a unique HUID. Mandatory hallmarking in many districts means most new 22K jewellery should carry these marks.
Because the test covers the finished piece, including joins, the hallmark tells you the true purity regardless of the soldering method. That makes old marketing labels such as KDM unnecessary.
Download the BIS Care app and verify the HUID whenever you buy. The app shows details including purity and article type, which you can match against the piece and the invoice.
Older jewellery with only a 916 stamp or a KDM label is common in family collections. Its actual purity may be close to 22K or noticeably lower. Testing before exchange removes the guesswork. If the result is lower than expected, it does not mean anyone was dishonest; standards and practices were simply different when the piece was made.
Some families choose to get old pieces hallmarked through a jeweller before passing them to the next generation, where possible, so that purity is documented for the future.
What to say at the jewellery counter
If a salesperson describes a piece as KDM or 916, respond by asking to see the BIS hallmark and HUID. Check that the purity grade is 22K916 for 22 karat. Verify the HUID in the app and confirm the bill lists purity, net weight and making charges clearly.
If you are exchanging old KDM jewellery, ask for an XRF purity test and a written valuation. Compare offers from a couple of jewellers. Purity may vary between old pieces, so test each one rather than assuming.
These simple steps cut through the jargon and put the focus on verifiable facts.
You can also ask the jeweller to show the HUID verification on their own screen or phone while you watch, then repeat it on yours. This small double check is quick and gives you confidence that the code belongs to the exact piece you are buying, especially when purchasing several items together.
Bottom line
KDM is a historical soldering term, and 916 is a purity number. Neither, on its own, guarantees what you are buying. The BIS hallmark with 22K916 and a valid HUID is the modern, reliable standard for 22 karat gold jewellery.
Insist on that hallmark, verify it, and keep your invoice. That is all you need to buy 22K gold confidently, whatever labels you hear in the shop.
Sharing this knowledge with family members who still use the older terms can also be helpful. A short explanation that KDM is about soldering and 916 is about purity, and that the BIS hallmark confirms both, often clears up years of confusion in a single conversation.
