Kerala Gold Jewellery Styles: Palakka, Mullamottu & More

Published by the Style Desk

Kerala gold jewellery styles explained: palakka mala, mullamottu mala, kasu mala, nagapadam, elakkathali and jimikki, with styling and buying tips.

Kerala gold jewellery styles: an overview

Kerala gold jewellery styles are known for smooth, glowing 22K gold with restrained ornamentation. Signature pieces include the kasu mala coin necklace, the mullamottu mala of jasmine-bud beads, the palakka mala with green leaf-shaped stones, the nagapadam serpent-hood pendant, the elakkathali leaf necklace and the jimikki jhumka. They pair naturally with kasavu sarees and set mundu.

Kerala has a deep love of gold, visible at every wedding, Onam and Vishu. Yet its traditional jewellery has a distinctive character: less carving than Tamil temple jewellery, more emphasis on the polished beauty of gold itself, and clever use of repeated forms like coins, buds and leaves.

Whether you are a Malayali bride, a guest at a Kerala wedding or simply drawn to the style, here is how to recognise the key pieces and wear them well.

Gold also plays a social role in Kerala weddings, where a bride's jewellery is often bought over many years and selected with great care by the whole family. That shared process makes understanding traditional designs especially useful for brides and their families.

Kasu mala: the coin necklace

The kasu mala is a necklace of gold coins, often stamped with Lakshmi, strung closely so they overlap. It is one of the most recognisable pieces in Kerala and is worn by brides and at festivals across communities.

Lengths vary from choker to long, and the number and size of coins change the weight dramatically. Lighter versions with smaller coins work for Onam and family functions, while heavier long versions are bridal.

Because coins are mostly solid gold with relatively simple work, kasu malas tend to have moderate making charges compared with intricate pieces, which many families appreciate.

Coins may be plain or embossed, round or slightly oval, and are sometimes interspersed with small gold beads or kemp stones. Modern designers create kasu malas with fewer, larger coins or with alternating textures for a contemporary look.

Smaller kasu chains with a single Lakshmi coin pendant have become popular for daily wear, offering the essence of the traditional design in an everyday size.

Mullamottu mala and palakka mala

Mullamottu mala means jasmine-bud necklace. Rows of small pointed gold beads shaped like jasmine buds create a soft, textured strand. It is elegant enough for weddings and understated enough for festivals.

Palakka mala features leaf-shaped pendants, traditionally set with green stones, often alternating with red. It is especially associated with traditional Nair and Syrian Christian bridal dress and is now widely worn.

Both pieces carry regional and community associations, though today they are enjoyed widely. Ask family elders if a particular design holds special meaning.

Mullamottu malas look particularly lovely on younger brides and at Onam, because their texture catches light softly rather than glittering. They pair well with jasmine flowers in the hair, echoing the bud shape.

Palakka malas are often worn with matching palakka earrings and can be quite long. In modern versions, the leaf pendants may be set with green-coloured glass or synthetic stones; ask the jeweller to specify.

Nagapadam, elakkathali and other pendants

The nagapadam necklace takes the form of a serpent's hood, set with red and green stones. It is linked with serpent worship traditions in Kerala and is a striking bridal piece.

Elakkathali means leaf necklace, made of overlapping gold leaf-shaped plates. Other traditional designs include the manga mala with mango motifs, the poothali, the kuzhal mala with cylindrical beads and the karimani mala with black beads.

The thali or minnu, worn by brides depending on community, is a deeply significant piece that varies in form and is usually chosen with family guidance.

Kerala's Christian, Muslim and Hindu communities each have distinct jewellery traditions, from the minnu and chains worn by Syrian Christian brides to the elaborate necklaces seen at Muslim weddings in the Malabar region. Many designs cross community boundaries today.

Jimikki, chuttu and other earrings

Jimikki kammal are Kerala's beloved jhumkas, typically bell-shaped with pearl or bead fringes. They range from tiny daily pairs to large bridal pieces.

Chuttu are traditional stud earrings, sometimes paired with jimikki below. Mekkamothiram is a traditional upper-ear ornament historically worn in some communities.

For daily wear, small jimikki or studs in 22K gold remain hugely popular with Malayali women of all ages.

Jimikkis are endlessly versatile. Tiny daily pairs suit college and office wear, mid-sized pairs work for festivals and temple visits, and large layered jimikkis with chains complete bridal looks.

Kerala earrings are often worn with a matching ear chain that runs from the jimikki into the hair, a style that also supports the weight of heavier earrings.

Bangles and other pieces

Kerala bangles are often smooth, rounded and highly polished, sometimes with subtle engraving. Kappu is the term for a gold bangle; thinner bangles called vala are worn in sets.

Odiyanam waist belts, nethichutti forehead ornaments and armlets are part of heavier bridal sets.

Many families also keep gold anklets for children, though customs vary.

Smooth Kerala bangles are practical for daily wear because they have fewer crevices to trap dirt. A single kappu with a watch makes a quietly elegant everyday look.

Kerala bridal looks are known for the sheer number of necklaces layered together, from short chokers to long malas, often over a cream and gold kasavu saree. If you prefer a lighter look, choose three necklaces of different lengths and textures and let the saree's border carry the rest.

For children's ceremonies such as the choroonu, the first rice-feeding, families often gift small gold bangles, chains or anklets, which become early keepsakes.

Styling with kasavu and silk

Kerala jewellery is designed to shine against the cream and gold of kasavu sarees and set mundu. The contrast makes gold look its richest.

For Onam, choose one or two signature pieces, such as a mullamottu mala and jimikki, rather than a full set. For weddings, layer short and long necklaces with matching earrings and bangles.

With colourful silk sarees, Kerala jewellery adds a classic touch without the heaviness of temple jewellery.

Kerala jewellery also looks striking with off-white handloom dresses and simple kurtas for an Onam celebration at work or college. One mullamottu mala or kasu chain with jimikkis instantly signals the festival without needing a saree.

For a Vishu morning or a Guruvayur temple visit, simple 22K pieces such as a short kasu chain, small jimikkis and two plain bangles feel traditional without being heavy, and they pair easily with a set mundu or a cotton kasavu.

Purity, buying and value

Traditional Kerala jewellery is predominantly 22K. Check for the BIS hallmark and HUID on every piece and ask for net weights and stone weights on the bill.

Kerala is home to many large jewellery chains as well as family jewellers, and buyers often compare per-gram prices and making charges. Policies on exchange and buyback vary.

For heirloom pieces, solid construction and simple designs typically hold value best.

Many Kerala families buy gold regularly, sometimes at Vishu or Akshaya Tritiya, viewing it as both adornment and savings. Simple, solid pieces such as kasu malas and plain bangles are often preferred for this reason because they are easier to exchange.

Ask the jeweller to separate gross weight, net gold weight, stone weight and making charges on the invoice. This is especially important for pieces with stones, like palakka malas, where stone weight should not be charged at gold rate.

Caring for Kerala gold

Kerala's humid climate can dull gold and loosen settings. Store pieces in airtight boxes with silica gel and wipe after wearing.

Clean with mild soap and lukewarm water, but avoid soaking pieces with stones or threads.

Have heavy necklaces checked for thread wear and hooks periodically.

Coconut oil in hair is common in Kerala and can leave residue on necklaces and earrings. Wipe pieces after each wear and clean them occasionally with mild soap and water.

Before Onam or a family wedding, lay out every piece you plan to wear and check clasps, hooks and screws. Small repairs are quick in the weeks before a festival but hard to arrange at the last minute when jewellers are busiest.
