The lab-grown diamond certificate in brief
A lab-grown diamond certificate is an independent grading report that confirms a diamond was grown in a laboratory and describes its 4Cs, measurements and other characteristics. Before buying, check ten things: origin wording, growth method, post-growth treatment, report number, inscription, carat and measurements, colour, clarity, cut, and that the invoice matches. Each takes only seconds and together they protect your purchase.
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, chemically and physically, which is exactly why clear documentation matters. Without testing equipment, a lab-grown and a mined diamond look the same, yet their prices differ greatly. The certificate, inscription and invoice are what keep the stone's identity clear today and for anyone who handles it in future.
Most lab-grown solitaires sold in India come with reports from independent laboratories, with IGI reports being very common, and some from other labs including GIA and SGL. The exact layout differs by lab, but the core items to check are the same.

1. Origin wording that cannot be missed
The report should state plainly that the stone is a laboratory-grown diamond, usually near the top. Many labs use different colours, borders or titles for lab-grown reports so they are not confused with natural diamond reports. If the origin is only mentioned in small print or seems ambiguous, ask the seller for clarification before paying.
Make sure the product listing, the packaging and the invoice use the same clear language, such as "lab-grown diamond" or "laboratory-grown diamond". Terms like "created", "cultured" or "man-made" are sometimes used, but vague phrases like "eco diamond" alone, without clearly stating lab-grown, are less helpful when you need clarity for resale or insurance.
This matters beyond the day of purchase. If the ring is ever sent for repair, resized at a local jeweller, valued for insurance or passed on to a daughter, everyone involved should be able to see at a glance that the stone is lab-grown. Clear origin wording on every document prevents honest misunderstandings years later, when the original seller and salesperson may no longer be around to explain what was sold.
2. Growth method: CVD or HPHT
Many lab-grown reports mention how the diamond was grown. CVD, or chemical vapour deposition, builds the diamond layer by layer from a carbon-rich gas on a diamond seed plate. HPHT, or high pressure high temperature, recreates the intense conditions in which natural diamonds form, crystallising carbon around a seed under great pressure and heat.
Both methods produce real diamonds, and neither is automatically better. Each can produce excellent or mediocre stones. The method may influence certain characteristics, for example, some HPHT stones contain small metallic inclusions, and some CVD stones have particular growth features, but your decision should rest on the stone's grades and appearance, not on the method alone. If the report does not mention the method, that is not necessarily a problem; simply ask the seller.
3. Post-growth treatment disclosure
Some lab-grown diamonds, particularly some CVD stones, receive treatment after growth to improve colour. Reputable reports usually mention this, for example with a comment that the stone shows evidence of post-growth treatment. Such treatment is common and not necessarily a problem, but it is information you are entitled to have.
Read the comments section carefully for this note. If you are comparing two stones with similar grades and one is treated and the other is "as grown", the untreated stone may be priced slightly higher by some sellers. Ask the seller to explain any comment you do not understand, and keep their answer in writing.
4. Report number and online verification
Find the report number and enter it yourself on the laboratory's official verification page. Do not rely on links or QR codes sent by the seller alone, as these could lead to look-alike pages. The online record should show the same shape, weight, measurements, colour, clarity and origin as the paper or PDF report.
If the online record is missing, different, or shows a stone that does not match, pause the purchase. Ask the seller to explain. Genuine reports are recorded in the lab's database, and reputable sellers will be comfortable with you checking them.
Check the report date as well. A stone graded long ago and held in stock is not a problem in itself, but it is worth confirming the stone has not been recut or damaged since. If the seller sends you a PDF, save it alongside a screenshot of the online verification page taken on the day you buy, so you have both versions on record.
5. Laser inscription on the girdle
Many lab-grown diamonds carry a laser inscription on the girdle with the report number, often with "LG" or "lab grown". The report's comments usually confirm the inscription. Ask the seller for a magnified photo or video showing it before dispatch, and check that the characters match the report number exactly.
The inscription is the link between paper and stone. If the report mentions an inscription but you cannot see one on the stone, ask why. A local jeweller can usually view it for you after delivery using a loupe or microscope, often for a small fee or free of charge.
Inscriptions are especially valuable for lab-grown stones, because they make origin visible to any future jeweller without sending the stone back to a laboratory. If you buy a lab-grown solitaire without an inscription, ask whether the seller or lab can add one. It is a small extra step that keeps the stone's identity attached to it permanently, even if the paper certificate is lost.
6. Carat weight and measurements
Check that the carat weight on the report matches the listing exactly, not rounded up. Look at the measurements in millimetres; they tell you the face-up size, which matters more than weight for how big the stone looks. For fancy shapes, check the length-to-width ratio to see if the outline matches what you expect.
If the seller provides a video with a measuring gauge, the numbers should be close to the report. Big discrepancies suggest a different stone or an error that needs explaining before you commit.
Because lab-grown diamonds are affordable in larger sizes, it is tempting to focus only on the carat number. Remember that a deep stone can hide weight underneath, so two stones of the same weight can look quite different on the hand. Use the diameter or the length and width as your guide to visible size, and check the depth percentage if the stone seems small for its weight.
7 to 9. Colour, clarity and cut grades
Read the colour grade on the D-to-Z scale, the clarity grade from FL to I3, and, for round stones, the cut grade. Lab-grown diamonds are often offered in high colour and clarity grades because they are more affordable, but remember that near colourless and eye-clean grades usually look identical once set.
Check polish, symmetry and fluorescence too. For cut, Excellent or Very Good is a sensible target for rounds; for fancy shapes, look at polish, symmetry, depth and a real video. Compare stones graded by the same lab where possible, since grading standards can differ slightly between labs.
Look at the clarity plot if one is provided. Even in VS or VVS grades, it is worth knowing where the main inclusion sits and what type it is, so that you can match it with what you see on the magnified video.
10. Invoice matching and record keeping
Your GST tax invoice should describe the stone as lab-grown and list the certificate number, diamond weight and quality, gold purity and weight, making charges and GST. When the invoice, certificate, inscription and stone all agree, you have a complete, defensible record of your purchase.
Keep the certificate, invoice and photos together, with scanned copies stored digitally. Check the seller's return, exchange and buyback terms for lab-grown diamonds specifically, as they typically vary and may differ from natural diamond terms. With this checklist done, you can wear your lab-grown diamond with complete confidence.
Revisit the documents once a year when you clean your jewellery or review insurance. It takes a few minutes and keeps everything ready for the day you might need it.
