Lab-grown diamond colour: what most buyers should pick
For most rings and earrings, a lab-grown diamond colour grade of F, G or H looks white to the eye in everyday settings, especially in white gold or platinum. D and E are rarer-looking icy white but cost more, while I and J can look slightly warm, which suits yellow gold. Above all, check for subtle tints that a grade alone may not reveal.
Colour is one of the 4Cs, and for white diamonds it measures the absence of colour. The scale runs from D, completely colourless, through the alphabet as faint yellow or brown increases. Lab-grown diamonds use the same scale as natural ones, so a G is a G regardless of origin.
Because lab-grown prices make high grades affordable, many buyers default to D or E. That can be the right choice, but it is not always necessary, and paying for colour you cannot see may take budget away from cut or size.
This guide explains how colour behaves in lab-grown stones, which grades suit which settings and how to spot tints that the letter grade does not fully capture.

Understanding the D to Z scale
D, E and F are called colourless. G, H, I and J are near-colourless. K and below show increasingly visible warmth. Graders compare stones face-down against master stones under controlled lighting, which is far more sensitive than viewing a stone face-up in a ring.
Differences between adjacent grades are tiny. Most people cannot tell D from F or G from H when the stone is set and viewed face-up. The differences become more noticeable across three or four grades, or when stones are placed side by side.
Larger stones show colour more easily than small ones, simply because there is more material for light to travel through. A J-colour half-carat may look white, while a J-colour two-carat may look slightly warm.
Shape matters too. Brilliant cuts like rounds hide colour well, while step cuts like emeralds and Asschers show it more, as do elongated shapes at their tips.
Typical colour in lab-grown stones
Lab-grown production gives growers control over impurities, so much of what reaches jewellery falls in the colourless and near-colourless range. That is one reason lab-grown stones in D to G are widely available at accessible prices.
CVD stones can grow with brownish or greyish undertones caused by structural defects or impurities. Many are treated after growth to improve colour, and reports usually disclose this. A treated stone graded F should look like an F.
HPHT stones often come out of the press with good colour, but trace boron can create a faint blue tint and nitrogen a faint yellow. Faint blue can look very white, even icy, to many eyes, but some buyers notice it in daylight.
These undertones are why two stones with the same letter grade can look slightly different. The grade measures the depth of colour, not necessarily its hue.
Hidden tints and how to spot them
Ask for a video of the stone in daylight or under neutral white light, and view it against a white background. Look at the stone from the side and the top. A brown or grey undertone can make a stone look slightly flat even when the grade is high.
Compare against another stone if you can. Side-by-side viewing makes tints more obvious. Some jewellers will show you two or three stones on a white tray.
Read the report comments for any mention of treatment or unusual colour behaviour. Ask the seller directly whether the stone shows any tint; good sellers will tell you.
If buying online, check the return policy so you can see the stone in person and return it if the colour does not match your expectations.
Matching colour to metal
White gold and platinum are cool and bright, so they show any warmth in a diamond more clearly. For these settings, many buyers prefer G or better, though H often looks white to most eyes.
Yellow gold and rose gold are warm and can make a near-colourless stone look whiter by contrast, or they can reflect some warmth into the stone. Many buyers choose H, I or even J for yellow gold settings to save budget without a visible difference.
Two-tone designs, such as a white gold head on a yellow gold band, combine the best of both: the head keeps the diamond looking white while the band gives a traditional warm look popular in India.
For 22K gold settings common in Indian bridal designs, the deep yellow strongly influences the overall look, so very high colour grades are rarely necessary.
Colour versus cut, clarity and size
Cut affects how bright a stone looks, and a brilliant stone hides colour better. If budget is limited, an excellent cut with G or H colour usually looks better than a mediocre cut with D colour.
Clarity and colour trade-offs are common. A clean-looking VS2 or SI1 with G colour often looks better than a VVS1 with I colour in white gold. Spend on what you see.
Size is another trade-off. Dropping from D to G may free up budget for a noticeably larger stone, which many buyers value more.
Decide your priority before shopping: icy white, maximum size or top clarity. Then adjust the other factors around it.
Fluorescence and colour
Fluorescence is a stone's glow under ultraviolet light. In natural diamonds it is often blue; in lab-grown stones it can vary. Under normal light, most fluorescence is not visible.
In near-colourless stones, faint to medium blue fluorescence can make the stone look slightly whiter in daylight. In rare cases, strong fluorescence can cause a slight haze.
Reports list fluorescence strength. If it is listed as strong or very strong, ask for a daylight video to check for haze.
For most lab-grown purchases, fluorescence is a minor factor, but it is worth knowing when comparing similar stones.
Recommended colour grades by piece
Solitaire rings in white gold or platinum: F to H for most buyers; D or E if you want the iciest look. Solitaire rings in yellow or rose gold: G to J, depending on stone size.
Stud earrings: G to I often looks white, since earrings are viewed from a distance. Tennis bracelets and eternity bands: aim for consistent colour across all stones, usually in the F to H range.
Pendants and mangalsutra pendants: G to I is typically fine, especially in yellow gold. Larger centre stones may need a slightly higher grade.
Whatever you choose, prioritise consistency in multi-stone pieces, because one warmer stone stands out against whiter neighbours.
Jewellery showrooms use bright, cool spotlights designed to make diamonds look as white and sparkly as possible. At home, under warm yellow bulbs, the same stone can look a shade warmer, and in daylight near a window it shows its true character most honestly. That is why viewing a stone in more than one lighting condition is so useful before you decide on a colour grade.
Indian weddings and festive functions often use warm lighting, fairy lights and diyas, which flatter near-colourless stones and make small differences in colour almost impossible to notice. Office lighting, by contrast, tends to be cool and flat. If your ring will mostly be worn at work, consider how it looks under tube lights or LED panels rather than under showroom spots.
When buying online, ask whether the seller's video was shot in daylight or under studio lights, and request a daylight clip if possible. A stone that looks white in natural light will look white almost anywhere.
Final tips
Do not pay a large premium for a colour grade you cannot see. View the stone in normal lighting, set or in a setting mock-up if possible.
Watch for tints by asking for daylight videos and reading report comments. Match colour to metal and stone size.
Use the savings from a sensible colour choice to invest in cut quality, a sturdy setting or a slightly larger stone.
With these principles, you will choose a lab-grown diamond that looks bright and white for years, without overspending on letters.
