Lab-grown diamond cut quality: the C that controls sparkle
Lab-grown diamond cut quality decides how much a stone sparkles, more than colour, clarity or even carat. An excellent cut returns light brightly to your eye, makes the stone look larger and hides small tints and inclusions. If you prioritise only one C, prioritise cut, then fit colour and clarity around it.
Because lab-grown stones are plentiful and relatively affordable, cutters have more freedom to cut for beauty rather than to save every fraction of a carat. Many lab-grown rounds reach top cut grades. But not all do, and fancy shapes vary widely, so cut is still where careful shopping pays off.
Cut refers to the stone's proportions, symmetry and polish, not just its shape. A round, oval or pear is a shape; how well it was cut within that shape determines brilliance, fire and scintillation.
This guide explains the cut terms you will see on reports and listings, how to judge fancy shapes and practical ways to spot a lively stone from photos and videos.
In Indian showrooms, bright spotlights can make even average stones look dazzling, which is why cut is easy to overlook in person. Online, polished studio videos can do the same. Learning to read a few basic numbers and to watch for dark areas in normal light helps you separate a genuinely well-cut stone from one that is simply well lit.

Brilliance, fire and scintillation
Brilliance is the white light reflected back to your eye, the brightness of the stone. Fire is the flashes of rainbow colour from light splitting into spectral colours. Scintillation is the sparkle pattern of light and dark flashes as the stone or viewer moves.
A well-cut diamond balances all three. If a stone is cut too deep or too shallow, light leaks out of the bottom or sides instead of returning through the top, making the stone look dark in the centre or glassy at the edges.
Lab-grown stones are diamond, so they have the same optical potential as natural ones. Cut unlocks that potential.
This is why two stones with identical colour and clarity can look completely different on your hand.
Cut grades on round brilliants
For round brilliants, major labs give a cut grade, typically Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair or Poor, and some sellers use the term Ideal for the very best proportions. Excellent is the top grade on many reports.
The grade considers proportions such as table size, crown angle, pavilion angle, total depth and girdle thickness, along with symmetry and polish. Reports list these values, letting you compare stones in detail.
As a broad guide, many well-performing rounds have a total depth roughly in the high fifties to low sixties percent and a table in the mid-fifties to around sixty percent, but exact ideal ranges vary by source. Use the cut grade as the primary guide and proportions as a tiebreaker.
Aim for Excellent cut with Excellent or Very Good symmetry and polish for a solitaire. For small accent stones, Very Good is fine.
Some sellers also offer light performance images, such as reflector scope or ASET images, which show how well a stone returns light. These are not essential, but if they are available they can help you compare two rounds that share the same cut grade, since they reveal subtle differences in light return and symmetry.
Fancy shapes and the bow-tie effect
Most reports do not give an overall cut grade for fancy shapes like ovals, pears, marquises, cushions, radiants, emeralds and princesses. You must judge them by proportions, symmetry, polish and, most importantly, appearance.
Elongated brilliant shapes, such as ovals, pears and marquises, can show a bow-tie, a dark band across the centre caused by light leaking. A faint bow-tie that shifts as the stone moves is normal; a strong, fixed one makes the stone look dull.
Length-to-width ratio affects shape preference. Ovals around 1.3 to 1.5, pears around 1.5 to 1.7 and marquises around 1.8 to 2.1 are popular ranges, but choose what looks elegant on your hand.
Always ask for a video, rotating the stone, to see how light moves across it. This is the single best test for fancy shapes.
Elongated shapes in particular reward patience. It is common to look at ten ovals before finding one with a faint bow-tie, even outline and pleasing ratio. Lab-grown supply is large, so you can afford to be choosy, and a good seller will happily send additional videos until you find the right stone.
Spread: looking bigger for the carat
Spread describes how large a stone looks from the top relative to its weight. A stone cut too deep carries weight in its pavilion where you cannot see it, so it faces up smaller than its carat suggests.
Compare millimetre measurements, not just carat. Two one-carat rounds might differ noticeably in diameter. The wider one, if well proportioned, will look larger on your finger.
However, cutting too shallow to gain spread can cause a fish-eye effect, a visible ring of reflected girdle, or a washed-out look. Balance matters.
Lab-grown pricing makes it easier to choose a stone cut for beauty rather than for weight retention, so ask for well-spread, well-proportioned stones.
Symmetry, polish and girdle
Symmetry measures how precisely facets align and meet. Poor symmetry can disrupt light patterns and create uneven sparkle. Polish measures surface finish; poor polish can slightly dull a stone.
Girdle thickness matters for durability. A very thin girdle risks chipping; a very thick girdle adds hidden weight. Medium to slightly thick is a sensible range.
Culet size, the tiny point or facet at the bottom, should be none or very small in modern cuts. A large culet can look like a visible dot through the table.
These details appear on reports and help separate excellent stones from merely good ones.
Judging cut from photos and videos
Look for even, crisp sparkle across the stone in a rotating video. The centre should be bright, not dark or glassy. In rounds, a neat pattern of arrows or contrast is a sign of good symmetry.
Watch for dark areas, strong bow-ties, fish-eyes or windows where you can see through the stone. Compare several stones side by side if possible.
Ask whether the video was taken in daylight or studio lighting. Studio lights flatter stones; daylight is more honest.
If shopping in person, view stones under different lights and from different angles, and trust your eyes over the paperwork.
Hearts and arrows is a term you may see for some round brilliants. It refers to a precise symmetrical pattern visible through a special viewer and indicates very high cutting precision. It is a nice bonus, but a stone without the label can still be beautifully cut, so let your eyes and the report guide you.
Common cut mistakes buyers make
The most common mistake is buying on carat, colour and clarity alone and ignoring cut, then wondering why a stone looks lifeless. Another is trusting a stock image rather than a video of the actual stone. A third is choosing an elongated shape without checking for a strong bow-tie.
Avoid these by asking for the full report, checking proportions or the cut grade, and requesting a rotating video in daylight. Spending fifteen minutes on cut can make more visible difference than spending a large extra sum on colour or clarity upgrades.
Remember too that the setting can influence how cut performs. Heavy prongs or a closed-back setting can block light entering from the sides and below, making a stone look less lively. Open settings with slim prongs let a well-cut stone show its full potential.
Balancing cut with other priorities
With a fixed budget, it is usually wiser to choose an excellent cut and drop a colour or clarity grade than the reverse. A brilliant G VS2 often looks better than a dull D VVS1.
Cut also affects how setting choices work. Bezel settings suit well-cut stones of most depths, while high prong settings show off light performance.
For matched studs or tennis bracelets, consistent cut quality across stones ensures even sparkle.
Prioritising cut gives you the most visible return on every rupee, making it the smartest single focus for lab-grown buyers.
