Why a marquise diamond ring stands out
A marquise diamond ring uses a long, boat-shaped stone with pointed ends, and it has the largest face-up area per carat of any classic diamond shape, so it looks dramatically bigger than a round of the same weight. It also elongates the finger more than any other cut. The trade-offs are two vulnerable points that must be protected and a tendency to show a bow-tie shadow.
Legend links the marquise to an eighteenth-century French court, where it was said to be cut to resemble a smile. Today it is enjoying a revival as a vintage-inspired, slightly bohemian alternative to rounds and ovals. In India, its shape echoes the leaf and paisley motifs found in traditional jewellery, so it looks natural with sarees and lehengas.
Lab-grown marquise diamonds make larger, better-cut stones more affordable, which matters because marquise quality varies widely. Knowing the key details helps you find one that looks elegant rather than skinny or lopsided.

Symmetry and outline
A good marquise is perfectly symmetrical along both its length and width. The two points should line up exactly, and the curved sides, called wings, should mirror each other. Even a small asymmetry is noticeable once set, because the eye follows the long outline.
Look at the stone face-up and draw an imaginary line through both points; each half should match. Wings that are too flat make the stone look thin and sharp, while wings that bulge make it look chubby. Gently rounded wings give the most graceful shape.
Polish and symmetry grades on the report are a starting point, but viewing a video or the stone itself is essential. A practical trick is to photograph the stone face-up on a white sheet of paper and fold the image in half on your phone screen, along the length and then the width. Misaligned points or uneven wings become obvious immediately, which helps when you are comparing several shortlisted stones from different sellers and cannot see them side by side.
Choosing a ratio
Marquise ratios usually range from about 1.75 to 2.25. Around 1.85 to 2.10 is the classic look. Lower ratios look fuller and softer; higher ratios look very slim and dramatic. Very long marquises can look narrow on wider hands, while very short ones can look stubby.
Choose by finger shape and style. Petite fingers often suit a moderate ratio so the stone does not overhang. Longer fingers can carry a slender, elongated marquise beautifully.
Calculate the ratio by dividing length by width from the measurements on the report. Length in millimetres also matters for comfort. A long marquise can extend close to the knuckle, which some women love for its drama and others find awkward when making a fist, holding a pen or typing. Try the stone or a sample of similar length on your own finger before deciding, and bend your finger fully to see where the tips sit.
Bow-tie and colour
Most marquises show some bow-tie across the centre. A faint, shifting shadow is normal; a heavy, constant one makes the stone look dull. Ask for a video and view the stone in different lighting before committing.
Colour concentrates at the points, so a near-colourless stone may show a faint tint at the tips. In white gold or platinum, G or H often looks bright. In yellow or rose gold, slightly warmer stones look natural and vintage.
For clarity, aim for eye-clean and avoid inclusions near the tips, which can weaken those fragile areas. Because the prongs at each point will cover a small part of the stone, a minor inclusion right at the tip may be hidden once set, but it is still a structural weak spot. A jeweller with a loupe can show you exactly where each inclusion sits relative to the planned prongs, which is worth five minutes of your time before you pay.
Protecting the points
The two points are the most vulnerable areas of a marquise. Every marquise setting should have V-prongs or claws over both tips, or a bezel around the whole stone. A six-prong setting, with V-prongs at the tips and two prongs on each side, is common and secure.
Bezels protect both points and edges, making them ideal for people who use their hands heavily. Halos also shield the outline, provided they follow the points closely. Run your fingertip over each point to confirm it is covered by metal.
A chipped point is visible and often requires re-cutting, so investing in protection upfront is wise.
Vertical, east-west and cluster settings
The classic orientation sets the marquise vertically, pointing along the finger, which gives maximum lengthening. East-west marquises, set across the finger, look modern and sit low, perfect for stacking and everyday wear.
Vintage cluster settings surround a marquise with small rounds, and navette rings use several marquises in a leaf or flower pattern. Three-stone rings with a marquise centre and round or pear sides feel regal and suit weddings. Toi et moi designs pair a marquise with a pear or round.
Marquise side stones also look beautiful beside a round or oval centre, adding length and a vintage touch without making the marquise the main event. A tilted marquise, set at a slight diagonal, is another fashionable option that looks artistic and suits women who want something truly their own.
Metal choices
Yellow gold gives a marquise a romantic, vintage warmth and pairs well with traditional Indian jewellery. White gold and platinum make the stone look icy and modern. Rose gold softens the long outline beautifully.
For daily wear, a 14K mount is harder and protects the points better; 18K offers a richer colour for occasional wear. Gold mounts should carry a BIS hallmark with a HUID number.
Milgrain edges and engraved shanks complement the vintage character of a marquise. A slightly tapered band draws attention towards the stone and balances its length, while a very wide band can make a slim marquise look narrow. For everyday comfort in humid weather, ask for a comfort-fit inner edge.
Think also about your future wedding band. A vertical marquise usually needs a curved or notched band to sit flush, because the long stone and its prongs extend over the shank. Many couples order a matching contour band at the same time, which avoids an awkward gap and keeps the two rings from rubbing against each other over the years.
Price and certification
Marquises usually cost less per carat than rounds of similar grade because cutting retains more rough, and their large face-up size makes them excellent value for visible size. Prices still vary with carat, colour, clarity, metal and brand.
Ask for an independent report from a laboratory such as IGI, GIA or SGL stating the stone is laboratory-grown, and verify it online. Fancy shapes typically have no overall cut grade, so rely on polish, symmetry, proportions and a video.
Request an itemised price breakup with stone cost, gold weight, making charges and GST, and read return, resize and exchange terms. Buyback percentages on lab-grown stones vary widely between sellers, so record the exact terms, and keep the report, invoice and hallmark details together for insurance and any future exchange.
Is a marquise right for you?
Choose a marquise if you want maximum visible size, a dramatic finger-lengthening effect, vintage charm and a distinctive shape that few others wear. It suits brides who love both bohemian and traditional styles.
Skip it if you dislike any bow-tie or want the simplest possible maintenance; a round or cushion may suit you better. Otherwise, a well-cut, well-protected marquise is an unforgettable ring.
Try it on vertically and east-west to see which orientation you love. Care is simple: soak the ring weekly in warm soapy water, brush gently under the stone, have the tip prongs inspected every six months and remove it for the gym and heavy chores. Store it in its own compartment so the points never press against other pieces. With that routine, a marquise keeps its graceful outline and bright sparkle for decades.
