Moissanite engagement ring: the honest overview
A moissanite engagement ring uses silicon carbide, a different mineral from diamond, that is very hard, highly brilliant and usually much cheaper than both natural and lab-grown diamonds. It shows more rainbow-coloured fire than a diamond, which some people love and others find less classic. If you want a durable, sparkling ring on a modest budget and do not need it to be a diamond, moissanite is an excellent choice.
Moissanite was first found in tiny quantities in a meteor crater, but all moissanite used in jewellery today is created in laboratories. It has become popular in India as couples look for alternatives that let them spend more on weddings, travel or a home. It also appeals to buyers who simply like its distinctive sparkle.
Understanding how moissanite differs from diamond helps you choose confidently and describe the ring honestly to family and friends.

Moissanite vs diamond: the science
Diamond is pure carbon; moissanite is silicon carbide. Moissanite scores about 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale, compared with diamond's 10, making it harder than sapphire, ruby and every other common gemstone. It is tough enough for daily wear and resists scratches very well.
Moissanite has a higher refractive index and much higher dispersion than diamond. In simple terms, it bends light more and splits it into more colours, producing strong rainbow flashes. Diamonds show more white brilliance with a balance of colour. Under bright sunlight, the difference is noticeable; under indoor lighting, it is subtler.
Moissanite is also slightly lighter than diamond, so stones are often described by their diamond-equivalent size in millimetres rather than carat weight. A 6.5 mm round moissanite, for example, matches the face-up size of a one-carat round diamond but weighs a little less. When comparing prices, compare millimetres, not carats, or you will be comparing different things.
Moissanite vs lab-grown diamond
Both are created in laboratories, both are durable and both are more affordable than natural diamonds. The main differences are material, sparkle and price. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond and passes as one in every respect. Moissanite is a different gem with its own look.
Moissanite is usually significantly cheaper than lab-grown diamond for the same visible size, especially above one carat. Lab-grown diamonds come with grading reports from laboratories such as IGI, GIA or SGL; moissanite is often sold with a seller's certificate of authenticity rather than independent grading.
If being a diamond matters to you or your family, choose lab-grown diamond. If you want maximum sparkle and size for the lowest price, moissanite is hard to beat.
Colour and quality grades
Early moissanite often showed a yellow or greenish tint, but modern colourless moissanite is widely available. Sellers often describe it using diamond-like colour terms such as D-E-F or near-colourless, though these are not standardised independent grades. View the stone in daylight against a white background to judge colour.
Moissanite is typically grown with very high clarity, so visible inclusions are uncommon. Cut quality still matters for sparkle and outline, especially in fancy shapes such as ovals and pears.
Larger moissanite stones may show a faint colour or a doubling effect when viewed through the side, which is a property of the crystal. Moissanite is doubly refractive, so when you look through the stone at an angle, facet edges can appear doubled. Most cutters orient the crystal to minimise this when viewed face-up, so it is rarely noticeable on the hand, but it is one way gemmologists distinguish moissanite from diamond.
Who should choose a moissanite engagement ring
Moissanite suits couples who value sparkle, durability and budget freedom over the idea of a diamond. It is a good fit if you want a large stone for a modest outlay, if you prefer to spend more on a wedding, honeymoon or home deposit, or if you simply love the lively rainbow flashes. It also suits people who like to change their jewellery often, since a moissanite ring can be a lovely everyday piece while an heirloom stays safe at home.
It may not suit you if your family places strong importance on a diamond for the roka or sagai, if you prefer the cooler white brilliance of diamond or if you want an independent grading report for every stone. In those cases, a lab-grown diamond offers a similar price advantage over natural stones while remaining a true diamond.
Some couples use moissanite as a travel ring or a placeholder until they can afford a diamond, then keep it as a second ring afterwards. There is no single right answer, only the choice that matches your priorities and feels honest to both of you.
Settings and metals
Moissanite suits every setting used for diamonds: solitaires, halos, three-stone rings, bezels and pavé bands. Because it is affordable, many buyers choose larger stones or more elaborate designs. Halos of small moissanite or lab-grown diamonds can make the ring even more dramatic.
Gold settings in 14K or 18K are common, and 925 sterling silver settings make moissanite rings very affordable, though silver is softer and tarnishes. For an engagement ring worn daily, gold or platinum is the better long-term choice. Look for a BIS hallmark with HUID on gold.
Yellow gold softens the rainbow fire slightly, while white gold and platinum emphasise brilliance. Because moissanite is so affordable, the setting often becomes the largest part of the bill, so it pays to invest in good craftsmanship: sturdy prongs, a band of about 2 mm or more and a smooth, well-finished gallery. A beautiful stone in a flimsy silver mount will not survive years of daily wear, whereas the same stone in a well-made gold setting can last a lifetime and even be reset later.
Price and value
Moissanite engagement rings in sterling silver can start from a few thousand rupees, while gold settings with larger stones typically start from around ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 and rise with metal weight and design. Lab-grown diamond rings of similar size usually cost more.
Resale value for moissanite is typically very low, similar to or lower than lab-grown diamonds. The gold setting retains value based on weight and purity. Buy moissanite for its beauty and practicality, not as an investment.
Ask for an itemised price breakup and check return and exchange terms. When comparing listings online, read the product title closely. Some sellers use the word diamond loosely, as in moissanite diamond, which is misleading. A trustworthy listing names the stone as moissanite, gives its size in millimetres, describes the colour range and specifies the metal and purity of the setting.
Telling family and friends
Some couples worry about how relatives will react to a non-diamond engagement ring. Being open usually works best. Explain that moissanite is a durable gemstone chosen for its sparkle and value. Many people appreciate the practical choice.
Avoid describing moissanite as a diamond, which can cause misunderstandings later. Moissanite passes some basic thermal diamond testers, so honesty about what it is matters, particularly if the ring is ever valued, insured, exchanged or passed down. Keep the seller's documentation that names the stone clearly.
If a diamond is important to your family, consider a lab-grown diamond instead. Many couples find that showing relatives the ring in person, in daylight, ends the conversation quickly, because the stone's beauty speaks for itself. What matters most is that the two of you are comfortable with the choice and can explain it without embarrassment.
Caring for a moissanite ring
Clean moissanite regularly with warm soapy water and a soft brush to keep it bright. Like diamonds, it can attract grease from skin, lotion and cooking oil, which dulls the fire noticeably. It tolerates heat and normal cleaning well, and most jewellers can clean it in the same way as a diamond.
Remove the ring for the gym, heavy work and swimming. Have prongs checked every six months. Store it separately to avoid scratching softer jewellery.
With care, a moissanite ring stays brilliant for a lifetime. Unlike cubic zirconia, it does not cloud, scratch easily or lose its sparkle over the years, which is why it is a genuine fine jewellery option rather than costume jewellery.
