Moissanite vs cubic zirconia: the clear winner for daily wear
In moissanite vs cubic zirconia, moissanite wins for anything you will wear often: it is far harder, keeps its sparkle for years and looks more convincing over time. Cubic zirconia, sold in India as American diamond or AD, wins on price and suits occasional, statement and costume pieces. If you want actual diamond, a lab-grown stone is the next step up.
Both are lab-made diamond alternatives, and both appear widely on Indian marketplaces in rings, studs, pendants and bridal sets. They can look similar in photos, which is why buyers often confuse them or assume they are interchangeable. In practice they age very differently.
This guide compares the two on durability, appearance, price, settings and care, so you can choose the right one for each piece in your wardrobe, from a sangeet choker to an everyday solitaire.
We also cover when it makes sense to skip both and choose a lab-grown diamond, because for some pieces the extra cost pays back in years of wear.

What each stone is made of
Moissanite is silicon carbide, a very hard crystalline material created in laboratories for jewellery. It is prized for high brilliance and strong fiery flashes. It is a gemstone in its own right, not a diamond.
Cubic zirconia is zirconium dioxide in a cubic crystal form, also made in labs. It became the classic inexpensive diamond simulant because it is colourless, easy to produce and sparkly when new.
Neither should be described as diamond. Listings that use phrases like moissanite diamond or AD diamond are blending terms; read the material line carefully.
Both can be set in anything from brass and silver to hallmarked gold, so the setting metal is a separate quality decision.
Neither material is new. Cubic zirconia has been the standard affordable simulant for decades, and moissanite has been available for jewellery since the late twentieth century. Manufacturing quality has improved for both, so today's colourless moissanite and good-quality CZ look far better than older versions you may remember from relatives' jewellery boxes.
Durability: the decisive difference
Moissanite rates about 9.25 on the Mohs scale, just below diamond, and is very tough. Everyday dust, which contains quartz, cannot scratch it. Facet edges stay crisp after years of daily wear.
Cubic zirconia rates around 8 to 8.5. That gap matters, because over months of daily wear CZ picks up fine scratches and abrasions on its facets. Those scatter light and give the stone a cloudy, tired appearance.
CZ also tends to attract grease and can develop a slight film that is harder to remove. A daily-wear CZ ring often looks noticeably duller within a year or two.
For engagement rings, everyday studs or office pendants, moissanite is the far more durable choice. For pieces worn a handful of times a year, CZ's softness is less of an issue.
Some sellers apply protective coatings to CZ to make it more scratch-resistant. Coatings can help for a while, but they eventually wear, especially on rings. They do not change CZ into a harder material, so treat them as a short-term improvement rather than a solution for daily wear.
Sparkle and appearance
Moissanite has higher brilliance and much stronger dispersion than diamond, so it throws vivid rainbow flashes, especially in sunlight. In larger sizes, some people find it looks flashier than diamond. It is also doubly refractive, which can make facets look slightly doubled when viewed at an angle.
New CZ also has strong fire but less brilliance than moissanite, giving it a slightly glassy look up close. It is singly refractive and very colourless, sometimes appearing almost too white.
Over time the difference grows, because moissanite keeps its polish while CZ dulls. Side by side after a year of wear, moissanite usually looks markedly brighter.
Under the warm lights common at Indian weddings, both sparkle beautifully at a distance, which is why CZ remains so popular for bridal and festive costume sets.
Colour is another visible difference. Older or lower-grade moissanite can show a faint green or yellow tint in some lighting, though modern colourless grades are much whiter. CZ is usually completely colourless when new, which some people find too stark next to real diamonds or warm gold settings.
Price and value
CZ is the cheapest option by a wide margin, making elaborate designs like heavy chokers, jhumkas and maang tikkas affordable. Moissanite costs more than CZ but considerably less than lab-grown diamond for a similar visual size.
Neither stone has meaningful resale value. Any value retained sits in the metal. A moissanite or CZ piece in hallmarked gold keeps the gold's worth by weight and purity; in silver or plated brass, far less.
Think in cost per wear. A moissanite ring worn daily for many years can be cheaper per wear than repeatedly replacing CZ pieces that cloud.
Moissanite brands sometimes offer warranties on brilliance or colour. Read what they cover and keep the card with your invoice.
Weight is a further clue. CZ is much denser than moissanite, so a CZ stone of the same size feels noticeably heavier. In large statement pieces, such as heavy bridal necklaces with many stones, that extra weight can make jewellery less comfortable for a long day of wedding functions.
Settings and metal choices
CZ is commonly set in brass, copper alloys or 925 sterling silver with rhodium or gold plating. Plating wears with daily use and may need redoing. Brass can cause skin reactions in some people.
Moissanite is often set in 925 silver or in 10K, 14K or 18K gold. Gold settings cost more but last longer and keep metal value. Check for the BIS hallmark with HUID on gold pieces sold in India.
If you have sensitive skin, prefer hallmarked gold, platinum or good-quality sterling silver over plated base metals, whichever stone you choose.
Ask about prong style too. Secure four or six prong settings protect stones in daily wear.
When to choose a lab-grown diamond instead
If you want the stone to be actual diamond, to be independently certified and to match existing diamond jewellery seamlessly, choose lab-grown. It costs more than moissanite but offers diamond's classic balance of brilliance and fire.
Lab-grown makes particular sense for engagement rings and pieces you may pass on or pair with family diamonds. It also carries the clearest documentation for insurance.
If budget is the main constraint, a smaller lab-grown stone with an excellent cut can look more refined than a larger simulant.
Many women mix all three: CZ for heavy costume sets, moissanite for statement rings and lab-grown for everyday classics.
A useful middle path is to buy moissanite for the pieces you wear every day and keep CZ for the dramatic occasion sets. When budget allows, upgrade the daily pieces to lab-grown diamonds one at a time, starting with the item you wear most, often a ring or a pair of studs.
Care tips for both stones
Clean moissanite with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush to remove oils, which dull its fire quickly. It tolerates regular cleaning and normal jewellery repairs well. For CZ, use the same gentle method but avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cloths that can worsen surface wear.
Store each piece in its own pouch or a lined compartment so harder stones do not scratch softer ones. Keep both away from perfume, hairspray and lotions, and remove rings before cooking or cleaning. These simple habits extend the life of moissanite and CZ alike and keep your pieces looking their best for functions.
Quick decision guide
Daily rings and studs: moissanite or lab-grown, not CZ. Occasional bridal and festive sets: CZ is perfectly sensible. Travel and backup jewellery: moissanite or CZ, depending on budget.
Gifts: moissanite in gold makes a durable, attractive gift; lab-grown if you want to give real diamond. Teen or first jewellery: CZ in sterling silver is affordable and low-risk.
Whatever you choose, read the material line, check the metal stamp, store pieces separately and clean them gently.
Matching the stone to how often you will wear it is the single best way to be happy with your purchase.
