Nickel allergy jewellery: what is going on
If your earlobes itch, your neck develops a red patch under a clasp or a rash appears under a ring, nickel is the most common suspect. Nickel allergy is a type of contact dermatitis: once your immune system becomes sensitised, sweat dissolves tiny amounts of nickel from the metal, and the skin reacts every time. This nickel allergy jewellery guide explains where nickel hides, even in some fine jewellery, and how to choose pieces that stay comfortable.
It is worth knowing that the allergy tends to be lifelong once it develops. Avoiding the trigger is the main strategy, and a dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and treat a flare.

Symptoms and how to tell it apart
Nickel reactions usually appear where metal touches skin for long periods: earlobes, the back of the neck under a clasp, the wrist under a watch buckle and the finger under a ring. Typical signs are itching, redness, small bumps or blisters and, with repeated exposure, dry, thickened or darkened skin. The reaction often starts 12 to 48 hours after contact, which is why people sometimes blame the wrong piece.
Not every rash under a ring is nickel. Soap and moisturiser trapped under a band cause irritant dermatitis, which often clears once you clean the ring and dry your hands properly. Green or black marks on the skin are usually caused by copper or silver reacting with sweat and are not an allergy at all. A ring-shaped rash that persists after cleaning, or rashes that appear with several different metal items, point more strongly to an allergy.
Location gives clues too. A rash on the earlobes that started after a new pair of fashion earrings, or a patch on the belly button area from a jeans stud, is classic nickel contact. A reaction on the face or eyelids can surprise people, but it may come from touching nickel-containing items and then the face, or from spectacle frames. Women who first noticed itchy ears in their teens after wearing cheap studs often find years later that their white gold engagement ring causes the same problem, because sensitisation persists.
Severity varies widely. Some people only notice mild itching after a full day of wear, while others react within hours and develop blistering. Either way, continued exposure tends to make the reaction stronger, so it is worth identifying the source early rather than putting up with it.
Where nickel hides in jewellery
Cheap fashion jewellery and some base-metal plated pieces are the main offenders, because the plating wears thin and exposes a nickel-containing alloy underneath. Belt buckles, jeans buttons, spectacle frames and watch backs are other everyday sources.
In fine jewellery, the main concern is white gold. Gold is naturally yellow, and to make it white it is alloyed with whitening metals. Some white gold alloys use nickel, while others use palladium. Rhodium plating usually covers the alloy, so a new nickel white gold ring may feel fine at first and start to itch months later as the plating wears at the base of the shank. Ask the jeweller which alloy they use; palladium white gold is generally the better choice for sensitive skin.
Earring posts, clasp springs, jump rings and solder joins can also differ from the main piece. A pair of 18K earrings may have a lower-karat or plated base-metal butterfly, and the reaction may come from the back rather than the stud itself. When buying, ask what the posts and backs are made of, and check that the hallmark covers the whole piece.
Metals that are usually safe for nickel allergy
Platinum is typically alloyed with other platinum-group metals and is widely considered one of the safest choices. High-karat yellow gold, such as 18K and 22K, contains mostly gold with silver and copper, and rarely contains nickel. Lower-karat yellow and rose gold are usually fine too, but with less gold there is more room for other alloys, so confirm the composition.
925 sterling silver is silver alloyed mostly with copper and is normally nickel-free, though some silver jewellery is plated over with rhodium or has base-metal findings. Implant-grade titanium and niobium are popular for new piercings and for people who react to almost everything. Surgical stainless steel is a confusing term: some grades contain nickel bound in a way that releases very little, which suits many people but not the most sensitive.
Testing and diagnosis
The most reliable way to confirm nickel allergy is a patch test done by a dermatologist. Small amounts of common allergens are taped to your back for a couple of days, and the skin is checked for reactions. This also rules out other causes such as fragrance or preservatives in skincare.
Nickel spot-test kits, which use a chemical that changes colour in the presence of released nickel, are sold online for checking jewellery. They are useful for screening buckles and costume pieces, but they only test the surface you swab, and rhodium plating can hide a nickel alloy underneath. Treat a negative result as reassuring rather than a guarantee.
Living with nickel allergy: practical tips
Remove rings before washing hands with harsh soap, applying hand cream or doing housework, and dry your skin and jewellery before putting rings back on. Moisture under a ring accelerates nickel release and irritation. Wear earrings with hypoallergenic posts, and swap fashion earring backs for gold or titanium ones.
For white gold pieces you already own, regular rhodium replating restores the barrier between skin and alloy. Some people use a clear barrier coating on the inside of a ring as a temporary fix, though it wears off and needs reapplying. If a cherished piece keeps causing trouble, a jeweller can sometimes replace posts or findings with a safer metal rather than retiring the whole piece.
Indian climate, sweat and festive wear
Heat and humidity make nickel allergy worse. Sweat contains salts that dissolve metal ions from an alloy more quickly, so a ring or earring that is comfortable in a cool office can trigger a reaction after a long summer afternoon outdoors or a crowded wedding. If you react mainly in summer or monsoon, that pattern itself is a useful clue to share with a dermatologist.
Festive and bridal jewellery is a particular risk. Heavy imitation sets bought for one function are often base metal with gold-tone plating, worn for many hours under hot lights and against perspiring skin. If you know you react, wear such pieces over fabric where possible, such as a necklace over a high-neck blouse, keep wear time short and remove them as soon as the event ends. For earrings, ask whether the jeweller can swap the hooks for gold or titanium ones.
Bindis, hair accessories, bangles and anklets can contain nickel too. People with severe allergy sometimes find the source is not the expensive gold piece but a metal hair clip or a bra hook touching the same area. Keep a simple diary of where and when the rash appears; it often reveals the culprit within a couple of weeks.
Caring for skin after a reaction
Remove the suspected piece immediately and wash the area with mild soap and water. Avoid scratching, which can break the skin and lead to infection, particularly on pierced earlobes. Do not put the same piece back on to see whether it happens again.
Persistent redness, oozing, swelling or spreading rash needs a doctor's attention. Over-the-counter remedies may help mild itching, but medicated creams should be used as advised by a doctor rather than self-prescribed for long periods. Once the skin has healed fully, reintroduce only metals you know are safe, one at a time.
Shopping tips for nickel-free jewellery in India
Ask for the metal composition, not just the karat. Look for a BIS hallmark on gold and silver, which confirms purity but not the composition of the remaining alloy. Brands such as CaratLane, Tanishq and GIVA list metal details on many product pages; when in doubt, contact customer service and ask specifically about nickel in white gold and findings.
When buying a gift for someone with sensitive skin, yellow gold or platinum is the low-risk choice. For a first piercing, choose implant-grade titanium or solid gold studs from a reputable piercer rather than gun-pierced fashion studs.
