Old gold exchange: how it works
In an old gold exchange, a jeweller tests your old jewellery for purity, weighs the gold, values it at their current rate after any deduction, and adjusts that value against new jewellery you buy. You usually get the best value when your old gold is hallmarked, you know its purity, and you compare offers from more than one jeweller.
Exchange is popular in India because many families hold jewellery that is out of style, broken or simply unworn. Converting it into new designs for a wedding or festival feels practical and sentimental at once.
This guide explains the process step by step, the deductions to expect and how to protect yourself.
Exchange is also a way to update jewellery to suit modern lifestyles. Heavy pieces from previous generations may be too large for office or travel, while lighter 18K designs or diamond pieces may be worn far more often. Converting part of a collection into wearable jewellery can bring gold out of the locker and into daily life without spending large amounts of fresh money.

Step 1: Know what you own
Gather your old pieces and sort them. Note which carry a BIS hallmark with HUID, which have older hallmarks and which are unmarked. Find any old bills, as they may show purity and weight. Separate pieces with stones, as these are valued differently.
For unmarked items, consider getting a purity test before you go shopping. Many jewellers use an XRF machine that estimates purity without damaging the piece. Some hallmarking centres also offer testing to the public for a fee. Knowing purity in advance strengthens your position.
Decide which pieces have sentimental value. Some heirlooms may be worth keeping or redesigning rather than melting.
Make a simple list with photos, approximate weights and any known purity for each piece. This list helps you discuss options with family members, decide which items to exchange, and keep track of what you hand over. It also makes it easier to compare valuations from different jewellers because you can refer to each piece by number.
Broken pieces, single earrings and tangled chains are worth including in your list. These small items are often forgotten in drawers, yet together they can add up to a useful amount of gold. Bundling them into one exchange is an easy way to fund a new piece without spending much extra money.
Step 2: How jewellers test and weigh
At the counter, the jeweller weighs the piece, often on a calibrated digital scale, and tests purity, usually with XRF. Some may also perform a touchstone test or, with your consent, a melting test that gives very accurate results but destroys the design.
Ask to watch the weighing and testing, and note the readings. If stones, lac or wax are present, the jeweller will estimate or remove them to find net gold weight. Pieces with heavy filling may show surprisingly low net weight, which is a common source of disappointment.
If you are unsure about a result, you can take the piece to another jeweller or to a hallmarking centre for a second opinion before agreeing.
Clean the jewellery gently before you go, but do not try to remove stones or fillings yourself. Damaged pieces are fine to exchange; jewellers deal with broken chains and missing earring backs routinely. What matters is that you see the weighing and testing clearly and understand how the net weight was determined.
Step 3: Understand deductions
Most jewellers apply some deduction to old gold. This may cover melting loss, refining costs and impurities, and the percentage varies by jeweller, by whether the gold is their own brand and by whether it is hallmarked. Many offer better terms on their own hallmarked jewellery.
Deductions may also differ between exchange, where you buy new jewellery, and cash buyback, where you simply sell. Exchange usually offers better value because the jeweller earns on the new sale.
Ask for the deduction as a clear percentage and the resulting rupee value in writing. Compare this figure across jewellers. A small difference in deduction can mean a substantial difference on heavy pieces.
Ask whether the deduction is applied to weight or to value. Some jewellers reduce the weight before applying the rate, while others reduce the final value. Both methods lead to similar results when the percentages are the same, but seeing the calculation clearly helps you understand and compare offers accurately.
Step 4: Compare offers
Visit two or three jewellers with the same pieces and ask each for a written valuation: weight, tested purity, rate applied, deduction and final value. Also note the making charges they will charge on new jewellery, because a generous exchange value can be offset by high labour on the new piece.
Seasonal exchange offers are common around Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya and wedding season, sometimes promising zero deduction or reduced making charges. Read conditions carefully, including minimum purchase requirements and eligible collections.
The best offer is the one where total value of old gold minus total cost of new jewellery leaves you with the lowest net payment for the design you actually want.
Look beyond the exchange value to the new purchase. A jeweller offering a slightly lower exchange value but significantly lower making charges on the new piece may give you a better overall deal. Write down both figures for each jeweller and calculate the net amount you will pay. This simple step often reveals which offer truly saves money.
Remember also that the gold rate used for exchange and the rate used for the new purchase should be from the same day. Ask the jeweller to confirm this on the estimate.
Exchange vs buyback vs selling for cash
Exchange means using old gold value towards new jewellery from the same jeweller. Buyback means the jeweller pays you for old gold, often by bank transfer. Some jewellers offer buyback only on their own jewellery. Policies, deductions and payment methods vary by seller.
Cash sales to unorganised buyers may seem quick, but they can involve weak documentation and unclear testing. Prefer established jewellers who provide written valuations and proper paperwork, and expect them to ask for identity proof for larger transactions.
If you need money rather than new jewellery, compare buyback offers carefully, as they are usually lower than exchange values.
Cash payouts for gold also fall under rules on cash transactions and documentation, which can change over time. Established jewellers will follow these rules and typically pay larger amounts by bank transfer. If a buyer offers an unusually high cash price with no paperwork, be cautious. Transparent documentation protects both you and the jeweller.
Documents and safety
Carry identity proof, any old invoices and certificates, and a list of items with photos. For high-value exchanges, jewellers may request identity documents as part of their compliance. Get a written receipt for the old gold you hand over, showing weight, purity and value.
Never leave old jewellery for testing without a receipt. If the jeweller needs to melt a piece for accurate testing, agree on terms first and be present if possible.
Keep all records of the exchange together with the new purchase invoice. These documents help if you ever need to clarify the transaction later.
If you are exchanging jewellery that belonged to someone else in the family, discuss it openly first. Heirlooms often carry emotional significance for several relatives, and agreeing in advance prevents misunderstandings later. Some families choose to redesign a piece rather than exchange it, so that the original gold stays within the family in a new form.
Tips for the best value
Test purity in advance, compare written valuations, negotiate on making charges for the new piece, time your exchange with a genuine offer and avoid melting heirlooms you may regret losing. Prefer jewellers with transparent HUID hallmarking on new pieces, so your future exchanges are easier.
Above all, think of old gold exchange as two transactions: selling old gold and buying new jewellery. Getting a fair price on both is how you get real value.
Finally, when you buy new jewellery through exchange, choose pieces with BIS HUID hallmarks and keep the invoice carefully. The next time you want to exchange, the process will be faster, more transparent and likely to offer better terms, because the purity is already verified.
