Oxidised and sterling are not opposites
The oxidised vs sterling silver question confuses many shoppers because the two terms describe different things. Sterling silver refers to the metal, an alloy of 92.5 per cent silver. Oxidised refers to a finish, a deliberate darkening of the surface to create an antique look. A piece can be oxidised sterling silver, or it can be an oxidised finish on a non-silver metal.
So the real question when shopping is not oxidised or sterling, but what metal sits under that dark, textured finish.
Once you understand this, shopping becomes much simpler. You decide the look you want, polished or antique, and separately decide how much you want to invest in the metal underneath, from affordable alloys to solid sterling.

What oxidising actually is
Oxidising, sometimes called antiquing, is a controlled tarnish. Jewellers apply a sulphur-based solution, which darkens the surface. They then polish the high points, leaving black in the recesses and silver on the raised areas. The result is the contrast and depth you see in tribal motifs, temple designs, filigree and Afghani-style jewellery.
In other words, the dark colour is the same chemistry as natural tarnish, just applied on purpose and controlled by the artisan. This is why you should never try to polish an oxidised piece bright with dips or polishing pastes: you will remove the design detail the maker intended.
Over time, regular wear gently polishes the raised areas further, which many people enjoy as the piece develops character.
Different regions of India have strong oxidised traditions. Rajasthani tribal jewellery, Kutchi and Banjara pieces, Odisha filigree and many Himalayan designs rely on darkened silver to highlight patterns. Contemporary designers borrow these motifs and pair them with modern shapes, which is why oxidised studs and rings now appear in office-friendly collections too.
Is oxidised jewellery real silver?
Sometimes. A large share of the oxidised jewellery sold in Indian markets, especially very affordable jhumkas, chokers and nose pins, is made from German silver or other white metal alloys, not real silver. German silver, also called nickel silver, is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc and contains no silver at all.
Oxidised sterling silver also exists and is widely made by artisans in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha and other regions, as well as by contemporary brands. It costs considerably more than German silver because of the metal value, and it should be labelled 925 sterling silver.
Both have a place. German silver is ideal for festive costume looks at low prices. Oxidised sterling is the choice for pieces you will wear often, keep for years or want to exchange later.
Price is often the clearest signal. Oxidised German silver earrings may sell for a few hundred rupees, while comparable designs in oxidised 925 sterling typically start from around ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 for small pieces and rise with weight. A large gap like this almost always reflects the difference in metal, not just branding.
How to tell oxidised sterling from German silver
Read the listing first. Sterling will say 925 or sterling silver, sometimes with BIS hallmarking. German silver may be labelled as such, or as white metal, alloy, oxidised metal or silver look. If no metal is stated and the price is very low, assume it is not sterling.
Check for a 925 stamp on the piece, typically on the back of an earring, the hook or the clasp. Compare weight, since sterling feels denser. Consider price: a large oxidised sterling choker costs significantly more than a German silver version because of the silver content.
Watch your skin. German silver contains nickel, which can cause itching or redness in sensitive people, especially in earrings. Sterling is generally better tolerated, although alloys vary.
Some sellers describe German silver pieces as silver jewellery in titles, with the actual alloy mentioned only in the specifications. Scroll down to the material field, and if it says alloy, brass, white metal or German silver, you know the piece is not sterling regardless of what the title suggests.
If you buy from a local market, ask directly whether the jeweller will buy the piece back or exchange it at a silver rate. Sellers of genuine sterling will usually discuss terms, while costume pieces have no exchange value.
Styling oxidised silver vs polished sterling
Oxidised silver belongs with textured, earthy outfits: handloom cotton and khadi sarees, block-printed kurtas, chikankari, ikat, indigo dyes and boho-style dresses. It is a staple for Navratri, college fests, art exhibitions and relaxed weekend brunches.
Polished or rhodium plated sterling is sleeker and suits office wear, western dresses, formal shirts and minimal looks. It pairs well with pastels, black and jewel tones, and works for evening events where you want a cleaner sparkle.
You can mix them, but do it intentionally. A polished sterling ring stack with an oxidised cuff can look curated, while matching finishes within a single outfit usually look calmer and more polished.
Oxidised silver also complements Indian craft textiles particularly well because both carry handmade texture. A mul cotton saree with a thick oxidised choker, or a Kalamkari kurta with oxidised jhumkas and a tribal cuff, has a cohesive, artistic look that polished metals do not quite achieve.
For western wear, try a single oxidised piece rather than a full set. Oxidised rings with a white shirt and jeans, or a pair of oxidised studs with a black dress, add an interesting earthy contrast.
Caring for oxidised pieces
Oxidised silver needs gentle handling. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth after wear to remove sweat and oils. Avoid silver dips, polishing cloths with chemicals, toothpaste and ultrasonic cleaners, all of which strip the dark finish.
Store pieces in individual zip pouches to limit air and to prevent heavy jhumkas from scratching or tangling with other jewellery. If you want to clean an oxidised sterling piece more thoroughly, a quick rinse with mild soap and water followed by thorough drying is usually safe.
If the oxidised finish fades with years of wear, many silversmiths can re-oxidise sterling pieces. German silver pieces can sometimes be refinished, but it is often more economical to replace them.
Keep oxidised and polished pieces apart in storage. Rubbing between them can transfer marks, and the sulphur residues on oxidised pieces can sometimes encourage nearby polished silver to tarnish faster.
When an oxidised sterling piece gets dusty after a festival, a soft brush, such as a clean makeup brush, is perfect for lifting dust from crevices without disturbing the dark finish. Follow with a dry cloth and let the piece air for a few minutes before sealing it in a pouch.
Caring for polished sterling
Polished sterling should stay bright, so you want to slow tarnish. Store it airtight with a silica gel sachet, wear it regularly and put it on after cosmetics. A silver polishing cloth removes light tarnish quickly.
If your polished piece is rhodium plated, avoid harsh cleaners that could thin the plating. Mild soap and water and a soft cloth are enough for most routine cleaning.
If your polished sterling has been darkening unusually quickly, review where it is stored. A drawer near the kitchen or a bathroom shelf exposes silver to sulphur and moisture, while a bedroom drawer with a silica gel sachet usually makes a dramatic difference within weeks.
Which one should you buy?
Buy oxidised German silver when you want a dramatic festive look at minimal cost, for a single occasion or a trend you are trying out. Buy oxidised sterling when you love the antique aesthetic and want a piece that lasts, can be repaired and holds some metal value. Buy polished or plated sterling for everyday, office and western wear.
Many women end up with all three, and that is perfectly sensible. Explore fine jewellery collections to compare oxidised and polished sterling designs.
If budget allows, consider owning a few hero pieces in oxidised sterling, such as a pair of jhumkas and a statement ring you wear to every festival, and use German silver for occasional or very large pieces. This balance gives you longevity where it matters and variety for celebrations.
Whatever you choose, read the material field carefully and keep your invoice.
