Why a pear shaped diamond ring stands out
A pear shaped diamond ring combines the sparkle of a round brilliant with the elegance of a marquise, in a teardrop outline that looks larger for its carat weight and lengthens the finger. It is a romantic, slightly unconventional choice that still feels classic. The keys to a beautiful pear are a balanced outline, a protected tip and a stone with minimal bow-tie shadow.
Pears have a long history in Indian jewellery, where drop shapes appear in maang tikkas, jhumka tips and pendants. A pear engagement ring therefore sits comfortably alongside traditional bridal sets while still looking modern. Lab-grown pears make larger, well-cut stones more accessible, which is important because pear quality varies a lot from stone to stone.
This guide covers what to look for in the stone itself, which settings protect it and how to wear it so it flatters your hand.

Reading the outline: shoulders, belly and tip
A good pear has a rounded head that is a smooth semicircle, gently curved shoulders that are neither flat nor bulging, and a tip that is centred with the rounded end. Lay a straight line from the tip through the middle of the stone: both halves should mirror each other. Lopsided pears look off-centre once set.
High shoulders give a fuller, chubbier shape, while low or flat shoulders make the stone look thin and angular. A pleasing outline usually has soft, evenly rounded wings. Some cutters leave the head slightly squarish to save weight; avoid this if you want a classic teardrop.
Because these details are not graded on reports, view the stone or a high-resolution video before buying. Take a screenshot of the stone face-up and look at it on your phone at small size, the way others will see it on your hand from a little distance. Small asymmetries that are hard to judge close-up often become obvious this way, and it is a quick, practical test when you are comparing three or four shortlisted pears from different sellers.
Pear shaped diamond ring sizes and finger coverage
Because a pear is longer than it is wide, it covers more of the finger than a round of the same weight. A half-carat pear already reads clearly on the hand, and around one carat it becomes a confident statement piece. Before choosing a carat target, look at the length in millimetres. A stone around 8 to 9 mm long sits comfortably on most Indian ring fingers, while stones well above 10 mm start to extend towards the knuckle and can feel large for office wear.
Also consider how the stone sits relative to the width of your finger. On slender fingers, a pear wider than the finger itself can look dramatic but may tilt or catch. A sensible jeweller will show you a few sizes, ideally in loose-stone holders or try-on samples, so you can see where the tip falls and how the shoulders sit against the band.
Length-to-width ratio
Pear ratios commonly range from about 1.45 to 1.75. Around 1.50 to 1.60 is the most popular balance. Lower ratios look broader and softer; higher ratios look slender and elegant and elongate the finger more. Very long pears can look narrow on wide hands, and very short pears can look stubby on slender fingers.
Choose by your hand. Petite fingers often look best with a moderate ratio, so the stone does not overwhelm the width of the finger. Longer fingers can carry a slimmer, longer pear beautifully.
Measurements on the certificate give you length and width; divide length by width to calculate the ratio.
Bow-tie and colour in pears
Like ovals and marquises, pears often show a dark bow-tie across the widest part. A light, shifting bow-tie is normal; a heavy, constant one makes the stone look dull. Ask for a video and rotate it in different lighting before committing.
Pears also show colour slightly more at the tip, where the stone is thinner. In white gold or platinum, a G or H colour often looks bright. In yellow or rose gold, a slightly warmer stone can look perfectly white, and the warm metal suits the soft teardrop shape.
For clarity, aim for eye-clean. Inclusions near the tip are a double concern because they can weaken a fragile area, so check the plot on the report.
Protecting the tip and choosing its direction
The point of a pear is its most vulnerable part. A knock can chip it, and chips there are visible and hard to hide. Every pear ring should have a V-prong or claw cradling the tip, or a bezel around the stone. Three-prong settings with a V-tip look minimal, while five-prong settings add security at the shoulders.
Bezel and half-bezel settings protect both tip and edges, making them ideal for everyday wear by people who use their hands heavily. Halo settings also shield the outline, provided the halo follows the point closely.
Run your finger over the point to check it is smooth and does not catch on fabric.
Traditionally, the tip points towards the fingernail, which lengthens the finger and looks most familiar. Pointing the tip towards the wrist is unusual but some people find it more personal and protective.
East-west set pears, lying sideways, look contemporary and work well for stacking. Toi et moi rings often pair a pear with a round or oval, tips angled towards each other. Choose the direction that feels right on your hand, but tell the jeweller clearly if you want anything other than the standard orientation.
Whichever direction you choose, make sure the setting supports the stone securely in that position.
Settings and metals that suit pears
A classic pear solitaire with a slim band lets the shape shine. A halo amplifies size and adds sparkle. Three-stone pears, with smaller pears or rounds on each side, create a regal look that suits weddings. Hidden halos and pavé bands add subtle side sparkle.
Yellow gold gives a warm, vintage feel and pairs well with Indian bridal jewellery. White gold and platinum make the stone look icy and modern. Rose gold softens the outline beautifully. Gold mounts should carry a BIS hallmark with a HUID.
For daily wear, a 14K mount is harder and better at protecting the tip; 18K offers a richer colour for occasional wear.
Price and certification
Pears generally cost less per carat than rounds of similar grade because cutting retains more of the rough crystal. With lab-grown diamonds this adds up to visible savings, letting you choose a slightly larger or better-cut stone. Prices still vary with carat, colour, clarity, metal and brand, so compare like-for-like grades across a few sellers.
Insist on a report from an independent laboratory such as IGI, GIA or SGL that states the stone is laboratory-grown. Fancy shapes like pears often have no overall cut grade, so look at polish, symmetry, table, depth and the video.
Ask for an itemised quote showing stone cost, gold weight, making charges and GST, and read return and resize terms carefully. Buyback and exchange policies on lab-grown stones vary a great deal between sellers, so note the exact percentage and conditions in writing. Keep the report, invoice and hallmark details in one folder, and photograph the ring from several angles for insurance records.
Is a pear right for you?
Choose a pear if you want a romantic, distinctive shape, more visible size for your carat, a finger-lengthening effect and a stone that echoes traditional drop motifs. It suits brides who love both modern and traditional jewellery.
Avoid a pear if you strongly dislike the possibility of a bow-tie or want the simplest possible maintenance; a round or cushion may suit you better. Otherwise, with a well-cut stone and a protective setting, a pear is a ring that feels personal for life.
Try a pear next to a round and an oval of similar size, and notice which one you keep looking at. Pears also have a lovely afterlife in your collection: they pair naturally with pear drop earrings for the wedding, and many women later add a curved band that hugs the teardrop for a complete bridal set.
