The short answer
Platinum is naturally white, denser, more durable over decades and generally better for sensitive skin, but it costs more. White gold looks very similar when new, is lighter and more affordable, but it is usually rhodium plated and needs replating every so often to keep its bright white colour. In the platinum vs white gold choice, platinum suits buyers who want a lifelong, low-fuss heirloom, while white gold suits those who want the look at a lower price and do not mind occasional maintenance.
Both are excellent metals for engagement rings, love bands and diamond jewellery. The right choice depends on your budget, how you will wear the piece and how much upkeep you are happy with.

What each metal actually is
Jewellery platinum is typically 95 per cent pure platinum, often marked Pt950 or PT950, with the rest made of metals such as ruthenium, iridium or cobalt for workability. Its white colour is natural and runs all the way through the metal.
White gold is gold alloyed with white metals such as palladium, silver or, in some alloys, nickel. Common purities in India are 14K (58.5 per cent gold) and 18K (75 per cent gold). Because gold is naturally yellow, white gold alloys often have a faintly warm or greyish tone, so jewellers coat them with rhodium for a brilliant white finish.
This difference, natural white versus plated white, drives most of the practical differences between the two metals.
The number on the mark matters too. A white gold ring marked 18K or 750 carries more gold than one marked 14K or 585. In India, gold jewellery generally needs a BIS hallmark with HUID, so look for that on white gold just as you would on yellow gold.
Colour and appearance over time
When new, a rhodium plated white gold ring and a polished platinum ring look almost identical to most people. Both make diamonds, lab-grown diamonds and moissanite look bright and white.
Over months and years, they age differently. White gold's rhodium plating gradually wears, especially on the palm side of rings, revealing a slightly warmer tone. A quick replating at a jeweller restores it. Platinum does not change colour; instead, it develops a soft, satin-like sheen called a patina as tiny scratches accumulate. Some people love this lived-in look; others have their platinum polished back to a high shine periodically.
Lighting affects perception. Under warm indoor light, unplated white gold can look slightly creamy, while under daylight both metals look crisp. If you are matching a band to an existing ring, compare them side by side in natural light before deciding.
Durability and wear
Platinum is dense and tough. When it is scratched, the metal is mostly displaced rather than lost, so a platinum ring retains its weight and substance over decades. Its prongs hold stones securely, which is why platinum is often chosen for solitaire and diamond settings meant to last a lifetime.
White gold is harder on the surface in some alloys, so it may resist fine scratches slightly better when new, but scratching and polishing gradually remove metal over many years. Both metals need occasional prong checks, especially for engagement rings worn daily.
For people with active lifestyles, such as those who exercise, cook or work with their hands a lot, platinum's resilience is a real advantage, though any ring should be removed during heavy work.
Thin, delicate white gold prongs can wear down with years of daily knocks. Platinum prongs hold up better but are still not indestructible. A yearly check at a jeweller, where prongs are inspected and re-tipped if needed, is the best insurance for any diamond ring.
Weight and feel
Platinum is much denser than gold, so a platinum ring feels noticeably heavier than an identical white gold ring. Many wearers appreciate this substantial feel as a sign of quality, especially in men's bands and couple rings.
Others prefer the lighter feel of white gold, particularly for large earrings, pendants and multi-stone necklaces, where weight affects comfort. If possible, try both at a store to see which you prefer before buying online.
Weight also affects price, since metal is charged by gram. A heavy platinum band costs more partly because it simply contains more grams of metal than the same design in gold.
Earrings deserve particular thought. Large platinum drops can feel heavy on the lobes during a long wedding day, so many women choose white gold for bigger earrings and keep platinum for rings and small studs.
Skin sensitivity and allergies
Platinum is widely regarded as hypoallergenic because of its high purity and the alloying metals used. It is a good choice for people with sensitive skin or known metal allergies.
White gold can be a problem for some people if the alloy contains nickel, which is a common cause of contact dermatitis. The rhodium plating initially creates a barrier, but as it wears, the alloy can touch the skin. If you are sensitive, ask the jeweller whether their white gold is nickel-free, often palladium-based, or choose platinum instead.
If you are buying a ring for someone else and do not know their sensitivity, platinum is the safer choice. Patch reactions often appear only after weeks of continuous wear, which is too late for most return windows.
Price and value
Platinum jewellery generally costs more than white gold for the same design. Even though platinum and gold prices per gram vary over time, platinum rings use more metal by weight because of density, are made at higher purity and require specialised craftsmanship, all of which increase the final price. Making charges and wastage policies also differ between jewellers.
White gold, especially 14K, offers a lower entry price. This can free up budget for a better diamond, a larger lab-grown stone or a matching band. For resale or exchange, both metals are valued on their precious metal content, but policies vary widely by seller, so check exchange and buyback terms before you buy.
Making charges for platinum can also be higher because the metal has a high melting point and needs special tools and skilled craftsmen. Ask jewellers to break down metal value, making charges and stone value separately so that you can compare quotes fairly.
Lab-grown diamonds have changed the budget equation. Many couples now choose platinum for the setting and a lab-grown diamond for the centre stone, getting both long-lasting metal and a sizeable stone within a moderate budget.
Maintenance compared
White gold rings typically need rhodium replating every year or two with daily wear, depending on how hard you are on your hands. Earrings and pendants need it much less often. Replating is quick and relatively inexpensive, and many jewellers offer it.
Platinum needs no plating. Occasional professional cleaning and polishing restores the shine if you prefer it bright, and prong checks every year or so are recommended for both metals. Over a lifetime, platinum's lower maintenance can balance out part of its higher upfront cost.
Over a ring's lifetime, replating costs for white gold add up, though each visit is modest. If you plan to wear the ring daily for twenty or thirty years, factor this into the comparison.
Which should you choose?
Choose platinum if you want an engagement ring or love band that will last for decades with minimal upkeep, if you have sensitive skin, or if you love a heavier, substantial feel. It is the classic heirloom white metal.
Choose white gold if you want the bright white look at a lower price, prefer lighter jewellery, or plan to wear a piece occasionally rather than daily. 18K white gold offers more gold content, while 14K is tougher and more affordable.
Whichever you choose, ask for the hallmark, the purity on the invoice and clear details on replating, resizing and exchange policies. Explore rings and fine jewellery collections to compare designs in both metals.
If you are torn, consider a hybrid approach: a platinum engagement ring for the piece you will wear every single day, and white gold for occasional earrings, pendants or a second band. This puts your budget where durability matters most while keeping the overall white-metal look consistent.
