Polki vs kundan vs diamond: the short answer
In the polki vs kundan vs diamond comparison, polki is uncut natural diamond set in gold, kundan is a setting technique that usually holds glass or other stones in refined gold foil, and diamond jewellery uses faceted, cut diamonds. Polki and cut diamonds carry diamond value; kundan's value lies mainly in its gold and craftsmanship unless real gems are used.
The confusion is understandable. All three appear in bridal trousseaus, they are often combined in a single necklace, and shop labels are not always precise. Some sellers use kundan as a general word for any traditional stone-set jewellery, while others say kundan polki for pieces that use the kundan technique with polki stones. Knowing what each term means protects you from paying diamond prices for glass, or undervaluing an heirloom.
Here is how they differ in material, look, price, resale and care, and how to choose for your wedding and beyond.

What polki actually is
Polki diamonds are natural diamonds that have been cut only minimally, retaining much of their original rough shape. They are usually flat or slightly domed slices with a few facets and an irregular outline. Because they are not cut to maximise sparkle, they glow softly rather than flashing, which gives polki its distinctive antique, candlelit look.
Traditionally polki is set in 22K or high purity gold using the kundan technique, with a foil backing behind each stone to enhance its glow, and the reverse of the piece is often decorated with meenakari enamel. Polki is a real diamond product, so its value depends on the number, size and quality of the stones as well as the gold. It has a long association with Mughal and Rajasthani royal jewellery.
What kundan really means
Kundan is a technique, not a stone. Highly refined, pure gold foil, called kundan, is pressed around each stone to hold it in place without prongs. The stones themselves can be polki diamonds, precious gems such as emeralds and rubies, or more commonly in modern jewellery, glass. Most kundan jewellery sold today at accessible prices uses glass or synthetic stones on a gold or gold plated base.
This means two kundan necklaces can be worlds apart in value. One may be solid gold with real emeralds and polki; another may be gold plated silver or brass with glass. When a piece is called kundan, always ask what the stones are and what the base metal is, and look for a BIS hallmark on gold pieces. Ask for these details to be written on the invoice.
Cut diamond jewellery and how it differs
Cut or faceted diamonds, such as round brilliants, ovals and pears, are shaped precisely to reflect and refract light, producing the bright sparkle and fire people associate with diamonds. They are graded on cut, colour, clarity and carat, and larger stones often come with laboratory reports from GIA, IGI or SGL. They are usually set in 18K or 14K gold or platinum with prongs, bezels or pavé.
The look is sharper and more contemporary than polki. Cut diamond pieces move easily from bridal wear to cocktail dresses and office outfits, which is why many women choose them for jewellery they plan to wear often. Polki, by contrast, reads as traditional and regal, and shines most with heavy silks, velvets and bridal lehengas.
Look, weight and comfort compared
Polki jewellery is typically bold and substantial, with large surface areas of stone and gold, enamelled backs and pearl or bead drops. It is often heavier and best suited to formal events. Kundan jewellery shares the same traditional silhouette and can be heavy too, though plated versions are lighter and less costly to wear often.
Cut diamond jewellery tends to be lighter for its visual impact because sparkle carries the look, rather than mass. That makes diamond sets easier to wear for long receptions and more versatile afterwards. Many modern bridal sets combine all three ideas, with a polki centre, cut diamond borders and emerald drops, giving the warmth of tradition and the sparkle of brilliance.
Price, value and resale
Cut diamond jewellery is priced on diamond grades and weight plus gold and making charges, and it has the most standardised valuation, especially for certified stones. Polki is priced on the weight and quality of the uncut stones plus gold and workmanship, and valuation is less standardised, so the jeweller's documentation matters a great deal.
Glass kundan has value only in its gold content, if solid gold, and its craftsmanship. On exchange or resale, jewellers generally value the gold and any genuine stones, while making charges are usually not recovered. Buyback and exchange policies for polki and diamond jewellery typically vary by seller, so ask in writing what percentage of the stone value would be returned before you buy.
Care and durability
Polki and kundan pieces need gentle care. The foil backing and enamel can be damaged by water, so wipe them with a soft dry cloth rather than washing, and keep them away from perfume and moisture. Store them flat in individual soft pouches or lined boxes, ideally with silica gel in humid cities.
Cut diamond jewellery is more robust. You can clean it with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush, and it tolerates more frequent wear. Whatever you own, have a jeweller check settings every year or two, and keep the invoice and certificate together with the piece so future valuation, insurance or redesign is straightforward.
Durability also differs in daily life. Cut diamonds set in 18K gold with sturdy prongs or bezels handle regular wear well, which is why diamond studs and pendants often become everyday staples. Polki set in soft, high purity gold with delicate enamel is more vulnerable to knocks and scratches, and heavy pieces put strain on clasps and doris over time. Glass kundan can chip and scratch, and plated bases may wear through with frequent use. Matching each type to how often you plan to wear it is the simplest way to keep all three looking beautiful for years.
How to tell them apart in the shop
Start by turning the piece over. Traditional polki and kundan pieces usually have a closed back, often decorated with meenakari enamel in reds, greens and whites, while cut diamond jewellery has an open gallery or prong work behind each stone so light can enter. That single glance tells you which family you are looking at, though it does not tell you whether the stones are genuine.
Next, look at the surface of the stones in daylight. Polki has a flat or gently domed top with a few broad facets and a soft, watery glow. Cut diamonds show many small facets and throw sharp flashes of white and rainbow light as you move. Glass used in kundan tends to look evenly bright, very uniform in colour and sometimes slightly rounded at the edges, and it may show tiny scratches or chips on the surface because glass is much softer than diamond.
None of these signs replaces documentation. A skilled imitation can fool a casual eye, so rely on a hallmarked invoice that states the stone type and weight, and a certificate or written declaration for diamond content. If a seller cannot or will not put the stone type in writing, treat the piece as glass and price it that way.
Which should you choose
Choose polki if you want an heirloom style bridal set with royal, antique character that you will wear at family weddings and festivals for decades. Choose cut diamond jewellery if you want sparkle and versatility, pieces you can wear to a reception, a cocktail party and the office. Choose glass kundan, clearly labelled, if you want the traditional look for a single event at a much lower cost.
Many brides combine approaches: a polki or kundan polki set for the wedding day and lighter cut diamond studs, a pendant or bangles for everything afterwards. Whatever you pick, insist on clear labelling of stones and metal, a hallmarked invoice and written exchange terms. That clarity is worth more than any discount.
