Pt950 Platinum Hallmark Explained: What the Mark Means

Published by the Style Desk

Pt950 platinum hallmark explained for Indian buyers: what 950 purity means, other platinum grades, where to find the mark and how to verify genuine platinum.

What Pt950 means

A Pt950 mark on jewellery means the metal contains 950 parts of platinum per 1,000, or 95 per cent pure platinum. The remaining 5 per cent is usually made up of other metals such as ruthenium, iridium or cobalt that improve workability and strength without changing platinum's natural white colour.

Pt950 is the most widely used standard for fine platinum jewellery around the world, including in India. If you are buying a platinum ring, love band or diamond pendant, this is the mark you are most likely to see.

Understanding this mark is useful because platinum is a significant purchase. Unlike silver or costume pieces, platinum rings and bands are usually bought for life, so you want to be sure of what you are paying for from the start.

Why platinum purity is so high

Gold jewellery is often made in 14K or 18K, which means 58.5 or 75 per cent gold. Platinum jewellery, by contrast, is usually 90 to 95 per cent pure. Platinum is naturally strong and dense, so it does not need as much alloying to be durable enough for rings and settings.

This high purity is part of platinum's appeal. It is one reason why platinum is considered hypoallergenic for most people and why it keeps its colour without plating. It also means you are paying for a piece that is mostly precious metal.

High purity also affects how platinum is worked. Because it melts at a much higher temperature than gold, jewellers need specialised tools and experience, which is part of the reason making charges for platinum are often higher than for gold pieces of similar design.

Other platinum marks you may see

Besides Pt950, you may come across Pt900, which means 90 per cent platinum, and Pt850, which means 85 per cent. These are more common in some international markets and in certain vintage pieces. Pt999 indicates near-pure platinum, used mostly for bars and coins rather than jewellery, as it is too soft for most designs.

You may also see marks like PLAT or PLATINUM, often alongside a number. Some pieces combine metals, for example a platinum head with an 18K gold shank, and may carry marks for both. Read the invoice to understand which parts are platinum.

Be cautious with descriptions like platinum plated or platinum finish. These describe a thin coating, usually on silver or base metal, not solid platinum.

When comparing listings, make sure you are comparing like with like. A Pt950 ring and a Pt900 ring of the same design will differ slightly in platinum content, and if a seller lists only platinum without a number, ask for the exact purity.

Where to find the Pt950 mark

On rings and bands, the mark is usually engraved or laser-printed on the inside of the shank. On pendants, look near the bail or on the back. On earrings, check the post, the clip or the back plate. On chains and bracelets, it is often near the clasp or on a small tag.

The marks are tiny, so use a magnifier or your phone's camera zoom. Alongside Pt950 you may see a brand logo, a serial or identification code, and sometimes the carat weight of diamonds set in the piece.

If a mark looks worn or unclear, especially on an older or second-hand piece, do not assume the worst. Rings that have been resized or polished many times can lose part of their stamp. In such cases, testing gives you the clearest answer.

Hallmarking and authenticity in India

In India, the hallmarking framework under the Bureau of Indian Standards is best known for gold, where HUID hallmarking is mandatory in most districts. Platinum certification has developed differently, and many reputable jewellers provide platinum authenticity through their own certificates or through industry quality assurance programmes, together with the Pt950 mark. Rules and practices can change, so ask the jeweller what certification applies at the time you buy.

A genuine purchase typically comes with an invoice that states the metal as Pt950 platinum, the weight of the metal, any stone details and the making charges. Some brands also offer a unique identification number that links to an online certificate. Keep all these documents safe.

When buying platinum from online sellers, look for a clear statement of the certificate provided, the metal weight in grams and the return policy. Screenshots of the listing are worth saving alongside the invoice, as product pages can change after purchase.

If you are gifting platinum, ask the seller to include the certificate in the gift box or send it to you separately, so the recipient has documentation for future servicing and exchange.

How to verify genuine platinum

Start with the documentation and marks, and buy from established jewellers or brands with clear policies. Large national brands and well-known regional jewellers typically provide certificates and after-sales support for platinum.

For independent confirmation, an XRF test at a reputable assaying or testing centre can analyse the metal composition without damaging the piece. Some jewellers have XRF machines and may test pieces on request. Charges and availability typically vary.

Simple home checks are limited. Platinum is very dense, so it feels heavier than a similar silver or white gold piece. It is not attracted strongly to magnets, although some cobalt-alloyed platinum may show slight magnetism. These clues are not proof; only proper testing confirms purity.

Testing is especially worth considering when you inherit jewellery, buy pre-owned pieces or receive a gift with no paperwork. A small testing fee is a reasonable price for certainty about a valuable item.

Online sellers sometimes offer certificate verification through a QR code or reference number. Scan or enter it as soon as the piece arrives, and contact the seller immediately if the details do not match the item you received.

Why the mark matters for price and resale

The price of platinum jewellery depends on platinum content, weight, design complexity, stones and making charges. A clear Pt950 mark and certificate help you compare offers fairly between jewellers.

When you exchange or resell platinum, jewellers typically value it based on its platinum content and weight, after deductions. Exchange and buyback policies differ a lot between sellers, and some offer better terms for their own brand's pieces. Documentation and hallmarks make the process smoother and more transparent.

Insurance is another reason to keep records. Insurers commonly ask for an invoice or valuation stating metal purity and stone details, and a clear Pt950 mark with matching documents makes claims far simpler.

Making charges are generally not refunded when you sell or exchange platinum, so the price you receive will be lower than what you paid even if platinum rates have not moved. Knowing this from the start keeps expectations realistic and helps you choose a seller whose exchange terms you are comfortable with.

Pt950 vs other white metals at a glance

Pt950 platinum is naturally white, dense and durable, and needs no plating. White gold in 14K or 18K is lighter and cheaper but usually rhodium plated. Rhodium plated sterling silver gives a similar look at a much lower price but is softer and suited more to fashion and gifting than to lifelong engagement rings.

If you want a white-metal ring or love band to wear daily for decades, Pt950 platinum is a strong choice.

Platinum also pairs well with lab-grown diamonds and moissanite, both of which look especially bright in a white setting. Many modern engagement rings combine a Pt950 mount with a lab-grown centre stone for a durable, sparkly and budget-conscious result.

Silver and white gold also need more upkeep over time, through polishing and replating, whereas Pt950 mainly needs occasional cleaning. For a ring you plan to wear every single day, that difference in maintenance adds up across the years.

Buying checklist

Before you pay, check for the Pt950 mark on the piece, ask for the authenticity certificate or quality card, confirm the metal weight and purity on the invoice, and understand the resizing, exchange and buyback policies.

For diamond-set platinum jewellery, ask for stone details and any lab certificate. Then compare designs across trusted sellers before deciding.

Taking a few minutes to check these details protects your investment and makes future servicing, insurance and exchange far easier.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price range of pt950 hallmark?+

Our top 20 picks range from ₹5,306 to ₹1,10,518 on Amazon.in.

What does Pt950 mean on a ring?+

Pt950 means the ring is made of 95 per cent pure platinum, with 5 per cent other metals for strength and workability. It is the most common purity standard for fine platinum jewellery in India and worldwide. It is naturally white and needs no plating.

Is Pt950 better than Pt900?+

Pt950 contains slightly more platinum than Pt900. Both are genuine platinum and durable. Pt950 is the more common standard for fine jewellery in India, while Pt900 is popular in some other markets. Compare price, design and documentation. Always check the exact purity on the invoice.

Is platinum hallmarked in India?+

Platinum jewellery in India is commonly sold with a Pt950 purity mark and authenticity certificates from the jeweller or industry quality programmes. Practices may change, so ask your jeweller what certification applies when you buy. Keep certificates with your invoice.

Can platinum plated jewellery be marked Pt950?+

It should not be. Pt950 describes solid platinum at 95 per cent purity. Platinum plated items have only a thin coating over another metal. If a low-priced item claims to be Pt950, ask for a certificate or get it tested. Plated items will not hold platinum value.

How can I test platinum at home?+

Home tests are not reliable. Platinum feels heavy and is mostly non-magnetic, but these are only clues. For confirmation, check the Pt950 mark and certificate, or get an XRF test at a reputable testing centre or jeweller. Documentation is your best everyday proof.
