Rhodium plating is a very thin layer of rhodium, a bright white metal from the platinum family, applied over silver or white gold through electroplating. On 925 sterling silver it adds a mirror-like shine, makes the surface harder and, most importantly, slows tarnish dramatically.

That is why so many modern silver brands sell rhodium plated pieces. You get the price advantage of sterling silver with a finish that stays brighter for longer and looks closer to white gold or platinum.

Rhodium is one of the rarer precious metals, which is partly why it is used only as a coating rather than as a solid metal for jewellery. A tiny amount goes a long way on the surface, and that is exactly where its benefits are needed.

How the plating process works

The piece is first polished and cleaned thoroughly, because any oil or tarnish will stop the rhodium from bonding. It is then dipped into a rhodium solution while an electric current passes through it, depositing a fine, even coat on the surface. The layer is usually measured in fractions of a micron, which is why it adds negligible weight and cost in metal terms but makes a big visual difference.

Some pieces are plated in the same process with a thin nickel or palladium barrier layer underneath. Nickel barriers can trouble people with nickel allergies, so if your skin is sensitive, choose brands that say their pieces are nickel-free.

Plating thickness is the variable most shoppers never see. Thicker, carefully applied rhodium lasts noticeably longer than a quick flash coat, but brands rarely publish exact figures. Does rhodium plating wear off?

The palm side of a ring band usually shows wear first. Earrings and pendants, which see little friction, can keep their plating for years.

Things that speed up wear include frequent hand washing with harsh soaps, sanitiser gels, chlorine in swimming pools, household cleaning chemicals and abrasive polishing. Sweat and Indian summer heat also contribute over time.

When the plating thins, you may notice a slightly warmer, greyer tone in patches, and those areas may begin to tarnish like ordinary sterling. This does not mean the piece is fake or damaged; the silver underneath is still there.

A useful mental model is to think of plating like the polish on good leather shoes. It protects and beautifies, but it is renewed rather than permanent. Terms and charges typically vary, so ask the seller what they offer.

Replating makes sense when a piece you love has lost its bright finish or begins to tarnish unevenly. For a daily-wear ring, that might be every year or two; for earrings, much less often. Pieces with delicate enamel, pearls or porous stones may need special handling, so mention these when you hand them over.

Before replating, ask the jeweller whether they will remove any existing tarnish properly and whether stones will be checked and tightened. Replating over dirt or tarnish produces patchy results that wear quickly. It is also a good moment to have a ring resized, since sizing work damages plating and is best done just before a fresh coat.

Caring for rhodium plated jewellery

Treat the plating as a protective skin. Clean it with mild soap and lukewarm water and a very soft brush, then dry thoroughly. Do not use silver dips or polishing cloths impregnated with strong chemicals too often, because they can wear the plating faster. A plain microfibre cloth is usually enough.

Remove rings before gym sessions, gardening and heavy cleaning. Keep pieces separately in soft pouches so harder stones do not scratch the plating. Put on perfume and lotion first and jewellery last.
