The short answer on silver hallmarks
A silver hallmark is an official mark, applied after independent testing, that confirms the silver content of a piece. In India, this is done through Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recognised assaying and hallmarking centres, and the mark typically includes the BIS logo, the purity grade and an identification code.
Unlike a jeweller's own 925 stamp, which is just a claim, a hallmark means a third party has checked the metal. That is why hallmarked silver gives you more confidence, especially for heavier pieces like payal, kadas and silver gifts for weddings.

Why silver hallmarking matters more than people think
Many families buy silver regularly: anklets for a new bride, a bowl and spoon for a baby, coins on Dhanteras, toe rings for a wedding trousseau. Because silver is cheaper than gold, buyers often do not question purity. Yet the gap between 925 and, say, 800 silver is significant on a heavy piece, and it affects both what you pay and what you get back at exchange time.
A hallmark creates a paper trail. If the piece is later found to be below the stated purity, you have a basis for a complaint with the seller and with BIS. Without it, you are relying on trust alone.
Hallmarking also protects you against a common practice in some markets: selling silver by gross weight including heavy wax, lac or stone fillings, then quoting a purity that only applies to the outer shell. A hallmarked piece and a detailed bill make it much harder for such practices to go unnoticed.
There is a gifting angle too. Silver is a classic present for weddings, naming ceremonies and housewarmings in many Indian families. When you give a hallmarked piece, the recipient can be confident of what they hold, and if they ever choose to exchange it, the mark makes that conversation easier.
The purity grades you may see
BIS standards for silver list several fineness grades. The ones most relevant to shoppers are 999 for fine silver used in coins and bars, 970 and 900 for some traditional ornaments and articles, 925 for sterling silver jewellery, and 835 and 800 for some lower-purity items. Each grade is shown as a three-digit number that represents parts per thousand of pure silver.
For fashionable jewellery like rings, earrings, chains and pendants, 925 is by far the most common. For puja articles and investment coins, 999 is typical. If you see a different number, it is not a fake by default; it just tells you the piece contains that proportion of silver and should be priced accordingly.
When a family heirloom has no visible marks, it is not necessarily low grade. Many older pieces were made before hallmarking was common. A purity test can tell you what you have, and a jeweller can then advise on cleaning, repair or exchange based on facts rather than guesswork.
How the silver hallmark looks on a piece
On a modern hallmarked item you will typically find three elements, often laser-marked in a tiny strip. First is the BIS triangle logo. Second is the purity grade, for example 925 or 999, sometimes written with the word SILVER. Third is an alphanumeric identification code linked to the hallmarking record. The exact format has been revised over the years as rules evolved, so older hallmarked pieces may look slightly different from newer ones.
Because the marks are very small, use a magnifying glass or your phone camera zoom. They usually sit on the inner side of a ring, near the clasp of a chain or anklet, on the back of a pendant bail or on the underside of a bowl.
Be cautious with marks that look like a hallmark but are not. Some sellers stamp a triangle-like logo or the word BIS without an actual hallmarking record. A genuine mark is neat, consistent and usually laser-engraved, and it should be backed by the jeweller's invoice. If in doubt, request the certificate or test report.
Is silver hallmarking mandatory in India?
Gold hallmarking with HUID is mandatory in most districts, but silver hallmarking has largely been voluntary, with the government and BIS announcing updates over time. Policies around silver hallmarking have been discussed and revised, so the safest approach is to check the current BIS guidance or ask your jeweller what applies at the time of purchase.
Practically, this means you will find both hallmarked and non-hallmarked genuine silver on the market. Established brands and larger jewellers are more likely to offer hallmarked silver, while small local shops may sell by weight with a verbal purity claim. Whenever you have a choice, especially for pieces above a few thousand rupees, prefer hallmarked silver.
Online marketplaces add another layer. Product pages may say hallmarked when only some variants are, or when the claim applies to a brand's gold range and not its silver. Read the material and certification sections closely, and keep screenshots of the listing along with your invoice in case questions arise later.
How to verify a silver hallmark
If the piece carries an identification code, check whether it can be verified through the official BIS Care app, which is used for verifying hallmarked articles. The app has primarily been associated with gold HUID verification, and coverage for silver depends on current rules, so do not panic if a silver code does not show up; ask the seller for the hallmarking certificate instead.
You can also request a purity test at a BIS recognised hallmarking centre, which typically offers testing for a fee. An XRF test is quick and non-destructive and gives a good reading of surface composition. For plated pieces, remember that the plating can affect surface readings, so the centre may advise on the best method.
Finally, match the invoice with the piece. The bill should mention the item, weight, purity, hallmark details if any and the making or labour charges.
Testing costs are typically modest compared with the value of heavier pieces, so for an inherited payal set or a large silver gift, it can be worth doing before you exchange or resell. Many families discover that older pieces are a different fineness from what they assumed, which helps set realistic expectations at the counter.
Questions to ask before you buy
Ask whether the piece is BIS hallmarked and what purity grade it carries. Ask whether the stated weight includes stones, beads or lac filling, which is common in some traditional anklets and bangles. Ask about plating: rhodium or gold plating is fine, but it should be disclosed.
Ask about the exchange or buyback policy. Some jewellers accept silver back at a rate linked to its purity and the current silver price, minus deductions, while others offer only exchange against new purchases. Policies typically vary by seller, so get the terms in writing.
When shopping online, look for brands that clearly state 925 sterling silver, mention hallmarking where applicable and offer an invoice with GST details.
If you are buying silver as a wedding or festival gift for someone else, ask the seller to include the purity and hallmark details on a gift invoice. It is a thoughtful touch that also helps the recipient later.
For gifts bought for weddings, ask the jeweller to note the hallmark details on the bill, so the family receiving the gift has a clear record from the start.
Making hallmarking part of your silver habit
A hallmark is not a guarantee of design quality or craftsmanship; it only confirms metal purity. You still need to judge the finish, the strength of clasps and settings and the comfort of the piece. But by making the hallmark your first filter, you avoid the biggest risk in silver shopping, which is paying for purity that is not there.
For your next silver purchase, whether a delicate pendant or a festive pair of payal, take thirty seconds to look for the mark and read the bill. It is a small habit that protects every rupee you spend.
Keep a simple record of your silver too: a photo of each important piece, its hallmark or stamp, its weight and its bill. This takes a few minutes but helps with insurance, family records and future exchange, and it makes the eventual handover of heirloom silver much clearer for the next generation.
