How silver resale value works
Silver jewellery resale and exchange value is mainly based on the weight of pure silver in the piece, calculated from its weight and purity, multiplied by the jeweller's buying rate for silver on that day, minus deductions. Making charges, design value and plating are usually not recovered. Policies vary widely, so always ask for terms in writing.
This means a heavy, high-purity piece like a pair of traditional payal or a kada holds more value than a light, intricate fashion pendant, even if the pendant cost more at purchase.
Understanding this before you buy makes you a smarter shopper. If future exchange value matters to you, you will lean towards heavier, simpler, higher-purity pieces from jewellers with clear exchange policies. If design and wearability matter more, you can enjoy intricate or plated pieces without expecting much back later.
Many Indian families hold silver in the form of payal, bichiya, kadas, puja articles, coins and gifts received at weddings and births. Over time, these may be exchanged for new jewellery, melted for new designs or passed down. Knowing how valuation works helps you make the right choice for each piece.
It also helps to remember that silver prices fluctuate. The rate a jeweller offers depends on the market rate on that day and the jeweller's own margin, so two jewellers may quote different amounts for the same piece on the same day.

Purity testing
Most jewellers test silver before quoting a value. Methods include touchstone testing, acid testing and XRF analysis, which is quick and non-destructive. Hallmarked silver with a clear purity grade and invoice can make the process smoother.
If you are unsure of purity, consider a test at a BIS recognised hallmarking centre for an independent reading before you sell or exchange.
Touchstone testing involves rubbing the piece on a stone and comparing the streak against reference samples, while acid testing checks how the metal reacts to specific chemicals. Both can mark or slightly affect the piece. XRF testing is non-destructive and reads surface composition, which is useful but can be influenced by plating.
For plated items, such as rhodium plated sterling, the jeweller may need to test a small hidden spot or rely on the hallmark and invoice. Explain any plating upfront so the test is interpreted correctly.
If a jeweller's test result differs significantly from what you expected, ask to see the reading and consider a second opinion at a recognised testing centre before agreeing to any deal.
Weight and deductions
The jeweller will weigh the piece. Stones, beads, lac, wax fillings and non-silver parts are typically deducted. Some jewellers also deduct a percentage for melting losses or refining. Ask what deductions apply and why.
Insist that weighing and testing happen in front of you, and request a written breakdown of gross weight, net silver weight, purity, rate and deductions.
Hollow and filled pieces deserve special mention. Many traditional payal and bangles are filled with lac or wax for shape, and these fillings can make up a meaningful share of the gross weight. Jewellers will deduct them, so do not be surprised if the net silver weight is much lower than the weight you remember from purchase.
Similarly, pieces with stones, beads, pearls or enamel will have those parts deducted, and the stones themselves rarely add to silver resale value unless they are valuable gems with certificates.
Exchange vs cash buyback
Many jewellers prefer exchange against new purchases and may offer better rates for exchange than for cash. Cash buyback, where available, often involves larger deductions. Branded jewellers may offer specific exchange programmes for their own pieces, sometimes with better terms.
Compare offers from two or three jewellers before deciding.
Some brands run buyback or upgrade programmes that offer a fixed percentage of the original invoice value or of the current metal value for their own products. Read the conditions carefully, including time limits, eligible products and whether you must buy something new in exchange.
Local jewellers you have a long relationship with may offer fairer terms, especially for traditional silver bought from them. Keep the original bill, since many jewellers give better terms for pieces they sold themselves.
If you exchange, check whether the new purchase carries higher making charges that may cancel out a generous exchange rate. Compare the total cost of the new piece after exchange, not just the rate offered for your old silver.
Sterling vs other silver grades
925 sterling silver contains 92.5 per cent silver, while traditional pieces may be higher or lower purity. 999 silver coins and bars generally fetch values closest to the silver rate. Plated and German silver pieces have little or no silver value.
Silver coins and bars from reputable mints or banks, with 999 purity and intact packaging, are among the easiest silver items to sell close to the prevailing rate, though buyback by banks can be limited. Jewellery, by contrast, carries making charges you will not recover.
Pieces labelled silver tone, silver colour, white metal or oxidised metal are generally costume jewellery. Do not expect any silver value from them, however much they cost at purchase.
Hallmarked sterling jewellery can be easier to exchange because the purity is documented, though the actual value still depends on weight and the day's rate. Old pieces of unknown purity may be valued more conservatively until tested.
Making charges and design value
Making charges, which can be a significant part of the purchase price for intricate or branded designs, are usually not recovered at resale. This is why silver jewellery is best bought for enjoyment, with resale as a bonus rather than the main goal.
For branded demi-fine pieces with gold vermeil or rhodium plating, the resale value is typically based only on the sterling silver content. The plating, brand premium and design are not usually paid for at exchange.
This is not a reason to avoid well-designed silver, but it is a reason to buy it for how it looks and feels in your life, rather than as an investment.
It also explains why plain, heavy pieces like kadas, payal and silver chains tend to retain a larger share of their original price than delicate, highly designed or branded items.
Tips to maximise value
Keep invoices, hallmark details and certificates. Clean pieces before taking them in. Separate pieces with stones from plain ones. Sell or exchange during periods of favourable silver rates if timing is flexible. Get quotes in writing and compare.
Ask whether the jeweller deducts GST, refining charges or handling charges, and whether these are shown separately. Transparent jewellers will explain every number on the slip.
Avoid selling to unverified buyers, street dealers or online services that do not provide a clear address, testing method and written receipt. A slightly lower but transparent offer from a trusted jeweller is often safer.
Before visiting a jeweller, check the approximate market rate for silver that day from a reliable financial news source. This gives you a reference point and helps you judge whether an offer is reasonable after deductions.
Group items by type when you visit: plain silver, stone-set pieces and items of uncertain metal. This makes testing and valuation faster and clearer.
When to keep rather than sell
Heirloom pieces often carry sentimental and craft value beyond metal weight. Consider repair, cleaning or redesigning before melting old family silver. Explore fine jewellery for new pieces when you do decide to exchange.
Redesigning is another option. Some jewellers can melt old silver and craft a new piece, charging making charges on the new design while crediting the silver. This keeps family metal in the family while giving you something you will actually wear.
Before melting, photograph heirloom pieces and note their history. Even if you choose to remake them, these records preserve the memory for future generations.
Some families choose to convert a portion of old silver into coins or utensils for puja and gifting, keeping its value in a useful form. Discuss options with a trusted jeweller before deciding.
