Silver toe rings at a glance
Silver toe rings, known as bichiya in Hindi, metti in Tamil and jodavi in Marathi, are worn on the second toe of both feet and are a traditional symbol of marriage in many Indian communities. The best silver toe rings are made of genuine silver, are adjustable or correctly sized, have smooth inner edges and are light enough to wear comfortably every day.
Today, toe rings are also worn as a fashion accessory by unmarried women and with western outfits, so styles range from heavy traditional designs to slim, minimal bands. Whatever your reason for wearing them, comfort and metal quality are what matter most, because toe rings face more friction, water and dust than almost any other jewellery.

Why silver, not gold, for toe rings
In many Indian traditions, gold is not worn below the waist out of respect, since gold is associated with Goddess Lakshmi. Silver is therefore the customary metal for payal and bichiya. Customs vary between families and regions, and some women do choose gold or other metals, but silver remains by far the most common choice.
There are practical reasons too. Silver is affordable, which matters for a piece that can be lost or damaged while walking. It is also malleable enough to be adjusted to the toe by hand, which is why so many traditional toe rings are open-ended or have a wraparound design.
Sterling silver at 925 purity is a good balance of strength and workability. Some traditional bichiya are made in other silver purities, so ask the jeweller if purity matters to you, and look for a BIS hallmark where available.
Families often pass bichiya down or have them made by a trusted local silversmith, which adds sentimental value. If you are inheriting a pair, have a jeweller check the metal for thinning and cracks before you start wearing them daily, since old toe rings may have been adjusted many times.
Popular toe ring styles
Traditional bridal bichiya are often wide with intricate patterns, fish motifs, small ghungroo, or several bands joined together. They are usually worn as matching pairs or sets of two or three rings on the second, third and sometimes fourth toes, depending on the community.
Daily-wear bichiya are slimmer and smoother. Plain bands, twisted wire designs, small floral motifs and single-stone styles are common. These sit flatter against the toe and slip easily under socks and closed shoes.
Contemporary toe rings include minimal sterling bands, rhodium plated designs with tiny cubic zirconia, oxidised tribal patterns and adjustable spiral styles. These are popular with beach holidays, sandals and western summer wear, and many women who do not wear bichiya for marital reasons enjoy them purely for style.
In Maharashtra, jodavi are often worn with a distinct style, while in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, metti are commonly plain or lightly patterned bands placed during the wedding ceremony. In Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, ornate bichiya with multiple loops are common. Knowing your family's tradition helps you choose the right design for a bride.
How to size toe rings correctly
Toe rings sit on the base of the toe, between the first joint and where the toe meets the foot. They should be snug enough not to slide off when you walk, but loose enough that they do not leave deep marks or restrict circulation.
Most silver toe rings are adjustable, with an open back that you gently squeeze or widen. To fit, open the ring slightly, slide it onto the toe from the side or the front, then press gently until it sits comfortably. Do not repeatedly bend the same point, as this weakens the metal and can eventually cause it to crack.
If you prefer closed bands, measure the circumference of the base of your second toe with a strip of paper, mark where it overlaps and measure the length in millimetres. Compare this against the seller's sizing chart. Remember that feet swell in heat, after long walks and later in the day, so measure in the evening for a realistic fit.
Do not force a ring over the toe joint. If it needs a lot of pressure, open it a little more. Squeezing a toe ring tight with pliers is a common mistake that leaves sharp edges and can damage the metal; gentle finger pressure is usually enough.
Comfort tips for daily wear
Choose toe rings with smooth, rounded inner edges and no sharp ends. Check that any open ends meet neatly and do not poke into the neighbouring toe. Lighter, thinner rings are better for long days on your feet, office commutes and travel.
If you wear closed shoes often, opt for flatter designs without raised motifs or stones that can press against the shoe. Some women keep a slim pair for weekdays and a more ornate pair for festivals and family functions.
If a toe ring causes redness, itching or swelling, remove it and let the skin heal. Persistent irritation may be due to sizing, friction or a reaction to a lower-quality alloy. Rings from reputable brands that mention nickel-free sterling silver are a better choice for sensitive skin.
Some women alternate between two pairs of toe rings, wearing one while the other is cleaned and aired. This simple rotation reduces constant pressure on the same spot and helps both pairs stay brighter for longer.
Toe rings during pregnancy and with health conditions
Feet often swell during pregnancy, so many women find their usual toe rings becoming tight. Adjustable rings can be loosened, but if swelling is significant, it is wise to remove them temporarily and wear them again later.
People with diabetes or circulation problems should be careful with anything tight on the feet, as small injuries can be slow to heal. If you have such concerns, it is best to ask your doctor about whether toe rings are suitable and how to wear them safely.
Caring for silver bichiya
Toe rings meet floors, water, soap and dust every day, so they tarnish and dull faster than other jewellery. Rinse them under lukewarm water with mild soap once or twice a week, gently scrub with a soft toothbrush and dry the toes and rings well.
Check them regularly for thinning, cracks or open ends that have widened. A worn toe ring can catch on bedsheets or carpets and come off unnoticed. Replace or repair them before they break.
If you remove them at night or for a pedicure, keep them in a small pouch rather than loose on a dressing table, where they are easily lost.
Pedicures deserve a mention. Salon scrubs, soaking tubs and chemical cuticle removers can dull or tarnish silver quickly. Remove toe rings before a pedicure, or ask the technician to work around them gently and rinse them well afterwards.
Pairing toe rings with payal and outfits
Traditional bichiya pair naturally with silver payal, especially for weddings, Karwa Chauth, Teej and other festivals. Matching motifs or finishes, such as both oxidised or both polished, give a coordinated look with sarees and lehengas.
With western wear, a single slim toe ring and a fine chain anklet create a light, summery feel with sandals, sliders and ankle-length trousers. Painted toenails in a neutral or bright shade frame the ring nicely.
For Karwa Chauth, Teej and Hartalika, many women refresh their bichiya and payal alongside new bangles and mehendi. A fresh polish or a new lightweight pair is a simple way to feel festive without a major purchase.
Price and buying tips
Simple sterling silver toe rings from established brands typically start at a few hundred rupees to around ₹1,500 per pair, with ornate bridal sets, gold plated or stone-set designs costing more. Traditional bichiya bought by weight will be priced on silver content plus making charges.
When buying online, check that the listing states 925 sterling silver or a specific silver purity, describes the size or adjustability and mentions whether the ring is sold as a single or a pair. Avoid listings that only say silver tone or oxidised metal if you want genuine silver.
