Silver vs platinum at a glance
Silver and platinum are both white metals, but they sit at opposite ends of the price and durability scale. 925 sterling silver is affordable, versatile and ideal for fashion-forward daily and gifting jewellery, but it tarnishes and is relatively soft. Pt950 platinum is far more expensive, naturally white, highly durable and tarnish-free, making it a lifelong choice for engagement rings and love bands.
In the silver vs platinum decision, the question is usually less which is better and more what role the piece will play in your life.
They also tend to occupy different places in a jewellery box. Silver pieces are often the ones you reach for on an ordinary Tuesday or pack for a holiday, while platinum pieces are the ones you put on and never take off, such as a wedding band. Understanding these roles makes the choice easy.

Composition and purity
Sterling silver is 92.5 per cent silver, typically alloyed with copper. In India it may carry a 925 stamp and, in some cases, a BIS hallmark. Fine silver at 999 is used mostly for coins and puja articles.
Jewellery platinum is typically 95 per cent platinum, marked Pt950. Its high purity is part of why it is hypoallergenic for most people and so durable.
The purity difference has practical effects. Because sterling silver contains copper, it reacts with sulphur and tarnishes. Platinum's alloying metals are chosen to keep it stable, so it stays white without plating. Both are genuine precious metals, but they behave very differently in daily life.
Hallmarking practices also differ. Sterling silver may carry a 925 stamp and sometimes a BIS hallmark, while platinum is typically marked Pt950 and supported by a jeweller's or industry authenticity certificate. In both cases, the invoice is an important part of your proof.
Colour and finish over time
New sterling silver has a bright, slightly warm white sheen. Over time, it tarnishes, turning yellowish to black, especially in humid weather. Polishing restores it, and rhodium plating can keep it bright for longer.
Platinum is a cooler, greyish white that does not tarnish. With wear, it develops a soft satin patina, which can be polished back to high shine. Many owners like platinum's ageless consistency.
Rhodium plated silver narrows the colour gap. When new, it looks very close to platinum. The difference shows over time: plated silver needs replating as the coating wears, while platinum simply develops patina. For pieces worn occasionally, this matters little; for daily rings, it matters a lot.
Some people prefer the slightly warmer glow of polished silver to platinum's cooler grey-white. If colour is your main concern, look at both side by side in daylight.
Some buyers like owning both: silver to enjoy the warm glow of polished metal, platinum for the permanence of an unchanging white. Seeing them side by side quickly reveals which one you personally prefer.
Durability and wear
Silver is soft compared with platinum. Thin silver rings can bend, prongs can loosen and chains can stretch with heavy daily wear. Thicker designs and bezel settings help.
Platinum is tough and holds diamonds and gemstones securely for decades. It still scratches, but its strength makes it ideal for rings worn daily, especially those with valuable stones.
Silver's softness has an upside: it is easy to work, which allows intricate filigree, oxidised detailing and large sculptural designs at accessible prices. Platinum's toughness makes such elaborate designs costly to produce, which is why platinum collections tend to focus on rings, bands, chains and diamond settings.
If you want a silver ring for daily wear, choose a thicker band and protective settings to compensate for the softer metal.
In short, silver gives design freedom while platinum gives strength, and knowing which matters more for a particular piece makes the choice straightforward.
Weight and comfort
Platinum is much denser than silver, so a platinum ring feels noticeably heavier. Many people find this reassuring for bands. Silver is light, making it comfortable for large earrings, layered necklaces and statement pieces that would be heavy and expensive in platinum.
Weight also affects how earrings feel through a long day. Large platinum earrings would be heavy on the lobes, which is another reason platinum is mostly used for studs, small drops and diamond pieces, while silver dominates statement earrings and jhumkas.
For rings and bands, many people find platinum's heft adds to the sense of permanence that suits a wedding or engagement piece.
Price and value
Silver is one of the most affordable precious metals. Quality sterling pieces from established brands typically start from about ₹1,500. Platinum jewellery costs many times more for comparable designs, reflecting metal value, density and specialised craftsmanship.
Both hold metal value, but silver's lower price means resale or exchange amounts are modest. Platinum's exchange value is higher, though terms vary by seller. Neither should be bought solely as an investment without checking buyback policies.
Think about cost per wear as well. A ₹3,000 silver ring worn for five years is excellent value. A platinum band costing many times more but worn every day for forty years can also represent good value. The right choice depends on how long and how often you will wear the piece.
Exchange practices reflect this gap. A silver piece exchanged after years of wear may return only a modest amount based on its silver weight, while platinum typically returns more in absolute terms, though deductions and making charges still apply. Ask about terms before buying either metal.
Silver's affordability also means you can update your collection more often. Trends change, and it is easier to refresh a silver wardrobe every few years than to replace platinum jewellery.
Skin sensitivity
Platinum is widely considered hypoallergenic. Good-quality sterling silver is generally well tolerated, but some alloys and plated layers may contain nickel. Choose nickel-free sterling from reputable brands if your skin is sensitive.
Ear piercings and constant-contact pieces like rings benefit most from skin-friendly metals. If you have reacted to jewellery before, platinum is a very safe option for these, while nickel-free sterling is a good budget-friendly alternative for earrings and pendants.
Signs of a reaction include redness, itching, small bumps or a rash where the metal touches skin. If this happens, stop wearing the piece and let the skin heal. Switching to a higher-purity, nickel-free metal usually solves the problem for most people.
When to choose each metal
Choose sterling silver for trend-led pieces, gifting, layering, oxidised ethnic styles, payal and toe rings, and when you want to experiment with designs without a major investment.
Choose platinum for engagement rings, love bands, men's wedding bands and diamond jewellery you plan to wear daily for decades. Its durability and permanence justify the higher price for these milestone pieces.
If you love the platinum look on a smaller budget, rhodium plated sterling silver gives a similar bright white appearance for everyday and fashion jewellery.
Many women use both metals together. A platinum engagement ring with a stack of rhodium plated silver bands, or platinum studs with layered silver chains, gives a coordinated white-metal look at a balanced overall cost. The colours sit well together, though platinum's patina and silver's tarnish age differently.
For gifting, silver is the natural choice for birthdays, festivals and casual occasions, while platinum is reserved for milestones like engagements, weddings and significant anniversaries. Matching the metal to the moment makes the gift feel right.
Care differences
Silver needs tarnish prevention: airtight storage, silica gel, regular wear and occasional polishing. Platinum needs only periodic cleaning with mild soap and occasional professional polishing and stone checks. Explore fine jewellery collections in both metals to find what suits your needs.
Keep the two metals stored separately. Platinum is harder and can scratch silver if they rub against each other in a pouch. Separate compartments or individual bags keep both looking their best.
With these differences in mind, you can choose silver for variety and platinum for permanence, and enjoy both.
Label pouches by metal so care routines never get mixed up.
