South Indian Gold Necklace Designs: A Complete Style Guide

Published by the Style Desk

South Indian gold necklace designs explained: attigai, haram, kasu mala, mango mala, guttapusalu and kanthi, with lengths, layering, purity and care.

South Indian gold necklace designs at a glance

Classic South Indian gold necklace designs include the attigai choker, the long haram, the kasu mala coin necklace, the mango mala, the pearl-clustered guttapusalu from Andhra and Telangana, and bead-based kanthi and gundu necklaces. Most are made in 22K gold, and brides typically layer a short necklace with one or two long ones to fill the neckline of a silk saree.

South India has some of the most distinctive gold traditions in the country. Each state, and often each community, has preferred designs, and many families pass necklaces down through generations, reworking them only when absolutely necessary.

Knowing the names and characters of these necklaces helps you shop with confidence, whether you are planning a bridal trousseau, choosing a festive piece for Pongal or Ugadi, or simply buying a necklace that reflects your roots.

This guide introduces each style, explains how lengths and layering work, and covers purity, pricing and care, so you can choose pieces you will wear for many years.

The attigai and other chokers

The attigai is a close-fitting choker that sits at the base of the neck. It is often set with kemp stones, rubies or uncut diamonds and finished with a fringe of gold beads or pearl drops that rest on the collarbone.

Because it frames the face, the attigai is usually the first layer in a Tamil bridal look. It suits high and round blouse necklines particularly well, and it photographs beautifully in close-ups.

Similar chokers exist across the South under different names, including the Kerala-style chokers with coin or bud details and Andhra designs with Lakshmi motifs. Many are made with flexible links so they shape gently around the neck.

For receptions and festivals, lighter chokers with a single row of stones and a small central motif give the same framing effect with far less weight.

If you prefer something lighter, a choker in 18K gold with lab-grown or natural diamonds offers a modern take on the attigai silhouette that suits receptions and cocktail evenings.

The haram and long necklaces

The haram is a long necklace that falls to the waist or below, often finishing in a large central pendant. Lakshmi, peacock, temple and mango motifs are common, and the strands may be made of linked plates, beads or coins.

A haram creates a strong vertical line that elongates the torso and balances the rich width of a silk saree's pallu. It is the dramatic centrepiece of many South Indian bridal sets.

Mid-length versions that sit at the top of the bust are more versatile, working for family functions, temple festivals and Varalakshmi Vratham without feeling overwhelming.

Very long harams are heavy. If you plan to wear one for a full day, choose a design with a soft, flexible chain and try it on for at least half an hour before buying.

Kasu mala and mango mala

The kasu mala is a coin necklace, with coins often stamped with an image of Lakshmi. It is beloved across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and the coins can be closely overlapping or spaced with beads.

The mango mala, or manga mala, features mango-shaped pendants, a motif associated with fertility and prosperity. The mangoes may be plain gold or set with rubies and emeralds and are sometimes paired with a central Lakshmi pendant.

Both are often worn as the long layer under an attigai. Kasu malas also work beautifully alone, and lighter versions with fewer coins have become popular for daily and office wear among younger women.

Coin and mango designs use relatively solid gold with moderate detail, so their making charges are often lower than heavily carved pieces of similar weight.

Guttapusalu, kanthi and gundu necklaces

Guttapusalu, from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, has clusters of small pearls hanging from a gold base, often studded with rubies, emeralds or uncut diamonds. The name loosely refers to bunches of beads, and the pearls create soft movement.

Kanthi is a broad term in Karnataka for a necklace, often made of gold beads or with pendants, while the gundu mala features rows of round gold beads and is popular in Andhra. Kasulaperu is the Telugu name for a coin necklace similar to the kasu mala.

The karimani or black bead necklace, worn by married women in several communities, sometimes combines gold beads with black beads and can be a daily-wear piece.

Many of these regional designs are now worn far beyond their home states, particularly at weddings where a bride wants to honour more than one family tradition.

Lakshmi haram, kasu mala and guttapusalu designs are also popular as gifts from parents to daughters at weddings. Families often choose a piece that reflects the bride's home state even when she is marrying into a different tradition, so both cultures are represented on the wedding day.

Lengths, layering and necklines

The classic South Indian bridal formula is a choker plus one or two long necklaces. Leave a clear gap between layers so each is visible, and vary textures, for example a stone-set choker with a coin or bead haram.

Match the necklace to the blouse. High and boat necks suit chokers and long harams worn over the blouse, deep round and sweetheart necks suit mid-length necklaces that fill the space, and V-necks suit pendants that point downward.

For smaller functions, one necklace at collarbone or mid-length is enough. Add jhumkas and two or four bangles, and the look feels complete without heaviness.

Petite frames can feel swamped by very long harams. A mid-length necklace with a moderately sized pendant often looks more proportionate.

Remember that jewellery appears differently in photographs. Long necklaces can disappear against busy pallus, so if your saree is heavily worked near the neckline, a simpler necklace with a strong outline usually reads better on camera.

For sangeet and mehendi functions, a single statement choker or a lightweight haram over a lehenga can carry the look while leaving the heaviest pieces for the main ceremony.

Purity, weight and value

Most traditional South Indian necklaces are 22K gold. Every piece sold by a registered jeweller should carry the BIS hallmark with the purity grade and a six-digit HUID, which you can verify through the BIS CARE app.

Ask for the gross weight, net gold weight and stone weight on the bill. Stones and pearls should not be charged at the gold rate, and some jewellers deduct stone weight at exchange, so understand the policy before buying.

Making charges for handcrafted necklaces can be substantial and vary between jewellers. Compare the total price per gram of gold including making charges and GST rather than headline rates.

Simpler, solid designs such as kasu malas and bead necklaces generally hold value better at exchange than intricate, stone-heavy pieces, though exchange and buyback terms differ by seller.

Styling tips for silk sarees and beyond

Kanjeevaram, Mysore silk, Gadwal, Pochampally and Dharmavaram silks are natural partners. Deep reds, greens, purples and mustards show off gold best, while pastel silks pair well with pearl-heavy guttapusalu or lighter coin necklaces.

Keep earrings proportionate. A heavy choker and haram call for jhumkas with ear chains, while a single mid-length necklace works with medium jhumkas or chandbalis.

For a contemporary twist, wear a kasu mala with a plain handloom saree or a long mango mala over a solid silk kurta. Avoid mixing too many different necklace styles in one look; two complementary pieces is usually ideal.

Hair matters too. A low bun with jasmine shows off necklaces and earrings, while open hair can hide chokers and jhumka chains.

Caring for South Indian necklaces

Store each necklace flat in a velvet-lined box or wrapped in soft cotton, separate from other pieces. Add silica gel in humid coastal climates.

Avoid perfume, hairspray, water and chemicals while wearing necklaces. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after use.

Heavy necklaces strung on thread or with hooks should be checked before every major function. Have stones, pearls and clasps inspected by a jeweller once a year.

Photograph each piece with its bill and hallmark details. This record helps with insurance, exchange and passing pieces down.
