The core difference in one line
Sterling silver is solid metal that is 92.5 per cent silver all the way through, while silver plated jewellery is a base metal such as brass, copper or alloy coated with a very thin layer of silver. In the sterling silver vs silver plated debate, sterling wins on durability, skin comfort and long-term value, while plated pieces win only on upfront price.
Both have a place in a wardrobe, but you should always know which one you are paying for.
The confusion arises because both can look identical on day one, especially in online photos. The real differences show up over months of wear, at the moment you want to repair or resize a piece, and if you ever try to exchange it.

What is under the surface
Cut a sterling ring in half and you will see silver all the way through. Cut a plated ring and you will see a yellowish or reddish core under a microscopically thin silver skin. That coating may be just a few microns thick, sometimes less.
This matters because jewellery rubs against everything. On a plated piece, the silver layer eventually wears through on high-contact spots, revealing the base metal. On sterling, wear only reveals more silver, and the piece can be polished back to shine again and again.
There is also a middle category: silver filled or thick silver overlay, where a heavier layer of silver is bonded to a base metal. These last longer than ordinary plating but are still not solid silver. Gold vermeil is different again; it is solid sterling with gold plating on top, so the base itself is precious metal.
Plating thickness also varies enormously between products. Some fashion pieces are flash plated with an extremely thin layer that can rub off within days, while better-quality plating lasts longer. Since listings rarely disclose thickness, price and brand reputation are your best guides.
Another clue is weight. Solid sterling is dense, while many plated pieces use lighter alloys and feel noticeably lighter in the hand for their size.
Price and value compared
Silver plated jewellery is cheap because there is almost no silver in it. Fashion pieces often sell for a few hundred rupees. Sterling silver costs more, with established brands typically starting from about ₹1,500 for small items and going well above ₹5,000 for statement necklaces or stone-set pieces.
The value story is different over time. A plated piece has almost no resale or exchange value; once the coating fails, it is usually discarded. Sterling silver retains metal value, can be repaired, resized and replated, and some jewellers accept it in exchange, with policies that typically vary by seller. For heavier items like payal or kadas, this residual value can be meaningful.
Think in cost per wear. If a ₹600 plated bracelet lasts three months of regular use and a ₹3,000 sterling bracelet lasts many years, the sterling piece is far cheaper every time you put it on. This calculation is especially relevant for pieces you plan to wear daily, such as a chain, studs or anklets.
Gifting is another consideration. A sterling piece comes with a sense of permanence, and the recipient can wear it for years. A plated gift that discolours after a few weeks can leave an awkward impression, even if the design was lovely. For birthdays, Raksha Bandhan or anniversaries, sterling is usually the safer choice.
Durability and how they age
Sterling silver tarnishes, but tarnish is removable. With basic care, a sterling piece can last decades and even become an heirloom. Rings can be resized, chains repaired and clasps replaced.
Plated jewellery usually looks great for a few weeks or months. After that, colour change, flaking and dark spots appear, especially with sweat, perfume and water exposure. Repairs are rarely worthwhile because soldering damages the plating and replating costs can exceed the price of the piece.
Plated pieces also react more to Indian weather. Humid monsoon air, sweat during summer commutes and frequent hand washing all accelerate the breakdown of a thin silver layer. Solid sterling will tarnish in the same conditions, but a quick polish restores it, whereas worn plating cannot be polished back.
Sterling also handles adjustments well. A jeweller can tighten a loose stone, add a new jump ring or reshape a bent hoop without ruining the finish, which is rarely possible with plated base metal where any heat or tool marks expose the core.
Skin safety and allergies
Many plated pieces use base metals that may contain nickel, which is one of the most common causes of contact dermatitis. When the silver layer wears off, the base metal touches your skin, and redness, itching or green marks can follow.
Good-quality sterling silver is generally well tolerated, although cheap alloys can sometimes contain nickel. If you have sensitive skin, choose brands that state their sterling pieces are nickel-free, and avoid unbranded plated jewellery for earrings in particular, since pierced ears are especially reactive.
Ear piercings deserve special mention. Earring posts are in direct contact with a small wound-like channel, so they are the first place reactions show up. Many dermatologists commonly advise people with sensitive ears to stick to metals like sterling silver, gold of higher purity, titanium or platinum for posts, rather than plated base metals.
Children's jewellery deserves the same caution. Kids' skin can be sensitive, and they tend to put things in their mouths, so solid sterling from a reputable source is a far safer choice than unbranded plated trinkets.
How to tell them apart when shopping
Read the listing carefully. Sterling pieces should say 925 sterling silver or solid silver, and may mention BIS hallmarking. Phrases like silver plated, silver tone, silver finish, German silver, oxidised metal or white metal mean it is not sterling. Some listings say silver alongside small print revealing brass; check the material section.
Look at the price relative to the design. A chunky silver cuff for a very low price is almost certainly plated. Look for a 925 stamp on the piece and an invoice that states the metal.
Once the piece arrives, check worn edges for yellow or pink metal showing through, and try a magnet; while silver and brass are both non-magnetic, a strong pull rules out silver immediately.
Ask the seller directly if the listing is unclear. A brand confident in its sterling silver will usually be happy to confirm purity, weight and plating in writing. Hesitation or vague answers are themselves useful information.
For jewellery from local markets, ask whether the shop will take the piece back or exchange it at a silver rate. A seller offering solid silver will typically quote an exchange value, while a plated piece will not have one.
Where silver plated still makes sense
Plated jewellery has a role. For a one-time costume theme, a sangeet outfit you will wear once or a very trend-specific piece, plated jewellery keeps costs low. It is also common in large, elaborate bridal costume sets where solid silver would be heavy and expensive.
Just treat it as a short-term accessory. Keep it dry, store it in a pouch and do not expect it to last for years.
Plated pieces can also be useful for testing a trend. If you are unsure whether you will enjoy wearing a chunky ear cuff or a layered body chain, try a plated version first. If you find yourself reaching for it constantly, invest in the sterling version next time.
Just remember to label such pieces clearly in your jewellery box so they are not mistaken for solid silver later, particularly when family members sort or exchange old jewellery.
The smart way to mix both
Invest in sterling silver for the pieces you wear most: everyday studs, a chain and pendant, stacking rings, anklets and toe rings. These see the most friction and skin contact, so solid metal pays off. Use plated or costume pieces for occasional statement looks.
Over time, this approach builds a collection that looks good, feels comfortable and holds some value. Browse sterling silver earrings and rings to begin.
Keep your sterling and plated pieces stored separately and labelled, so you always know what you own. It makes caring for them, and deciding what to repair or replace, much simpler.
