Temple Jewellery in Gold: Motifs, Craft and Buying Tips

Published by the Style Desk

Temple jewellery in gold explained: origins, deity motifs, nakshi craft, kemp stones, key pieces in a set, real gold vs plated silver and how to buy well.

Temple jewellery in gold, in a nutshell

Temple jewellery in gold is a South Indian tradition of sculptural, hand-worked pieces featuring deities, temple towers, peacocks and lotuses, often set with red and green kemp stones. It began as ornaments for temple idols and classical dancers and is now central to many brides' trousseaus. Authentic pieces are usually 22K gold; many modern versions are gold-plated silver, so always check the hallmark.

Temple jewellery is easy to recognise yet hard to master. It has a weighty, almost architectural quality, with three-dimensional figures, borders of tiny gold beads and a deep yellow glow. It is the jewellery of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dancers and of grand weddings in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala.

Understanding the motifs, craft and materials will help you choose pieces that are both meaningful and good value, whether you are buying a full bridal set or a single pendant.

It also carries a sense of continuity. Many families still own temple pieces made generations ago, and wearing them at a wedding connects the bride to every woman in the family who wore them before her.

Where temple jewellery comes from

Temple jewellery traces back to the great South Indian temple cultures, when goldsmiths created ornaments to adorn deities. Over time, similar pieces were made for temple dancers, and eventually for royal and wealthy families.

Nagercoil in Tamil Nadu is especially associated with traditional temple jewellery, and craft communities across the South still produce it by hand. Classical dance revived wider interest in the twentieth century, as dancers needed ornate, stage-visible jewellery.

Today, temple designs are produced by family jewellers as well as large brands, in both heavy traditional and lighter contemporary forms.

Classical dance had a particular influence on design. Dancers needed jewellery that looked dramatic from a distance, stayed in place through vigorous movement and suited stage lighting. Those requirements shaped the bold forms, generous borders and secure fastenings that define temple jewellery today.

Motifs and what they mean

Goddess Lakshmi is the most beloved motif, usually seated on a lotus and flanked by elephants. Ganesha, Krishna, Murugan and Shiva also appear, along with the gopuram or temple tower. Many families choose a motif linked to their family deity.

Nature motifs are equally important. The peacock signifies beauty and grace, the hamsa or swan wisdom, the lotus purity, the mango fertility and prosperity, and the parrot love. Coins with Lakshmi impressions form the kasu mala necklace.

Reading these motifs turns a necklace into a story. When buying, ask the jeweller what each element represents; good craftspeople are proud to explain their work.

Some motifs appear in specific pieces. The jadai billai, worn on the braid, often features a sun and moon pair, symbolising the cosmic balance. Hair ornaments called rakodi are round and sit at the crown of the bun. Learning these names helps you communicate clearly with jewellers.

The craft: nakshi work, kemp and gundu

Nakshi work is the heart of temple jewellery. Artisans hammer gold sheet from behind, a technique called repoussé, to raise figures, then refine details by hand with fine tools. The result is relief carving with real depth.

Kemp stones are the red and green stones traditionally set into temple pieces. They are usually glass or synthetic, cut flat and set closely; high-end pieces may use rubies, emeralds or uncut diamonds instead. Ask what stones are used, as it affects price considerably.

Gundu are small gold beads used as borders and drops, and many pieces end in pearl or bead fringes. Some designs also use antique or oxidised finishes on the gold to bring out relief detail.

Handwork is slow. A large temple haram can take many weeks to complete, and skilled nakshi artisans are fewer than they once were. This is part of why authentic handcrafted temple jewellery commands a premium and why it is valued so highly as an heirloom.

Machine-assisted and cast designs now exist alongside handmade ones. They are generally lighter and more affordable but can look flatter. If handwork matters to you, ask the jeweller how the piece was made and look closely at the depth and crispness of the relief.

Key pieces in a temple set

A traditional South Indian bridal temple set may include an attigai or short choker, a long haram or necklace, a mango mala, jhumkas with ear chains called mattal, a maang tikka or nethi chutti, a jadai billai for the braid, an oddiyanam waist belt, vanki armlets and bangles.

Not every bride wears all of them, and many families build sets over years. A single Lakshmi pendant on a chain, temple jhumkas or a kasu mala are lovely starting points that work outside weddings too.

Consider which pieces will be reused. Jhumkas, bangles and a mid-length necklace are worn far more often than a waist belt or braid ornament.

Real gold, plated silver and imitation

Solid gold temple jewellery is typically 22K and should carry the BIS hallmark with purity and a six-digit HUID. Because pieces are heavy, prices are high, and gold weight forms most of the value.

Gold-plated 925 silver temple jewellery reproduces the look at a fraction of the price and is popular with dancers and those who want a full set for one event. Imitation temple jewellery in brass or copper alloys is cheaper still.

All three are legitimate choices, but you should know which you are buying. Check hallmarks and bills, and be cautious of listings that say gold-look or antique gold without stating the metal.

Antique-finish temple jewellery, sometimes called antique gold, uses a darker oxidised surface to emphasise relief. It can be real gold with a special finish or a plated imitation, so the finish alone tells you nothing about the metal; the hallmark does.

Styling temple jewellery today

Kanjeevaram, Mysore silk, Pochampally and Kerala kasavu sarees are classic partners. Rich maroons, greens, mustards and temple-border silks bring out the warmth of temple gold.

For smaller functions, wear one statement temple piece, such as a Lakshmi haram, with simple studs, or temple jhumkas with a plain silk saree. Many women also pair temple jhumkas with handloom cottons or even Indo-western outfits for a modern look.

Avoid mixing temple jewellery with polki or diamond-heavy pieces in the same look; the styles compete. Let temple gold be the focus.

Dancers usually wear a full set, including head, ear, neck, waist and arm pieces, all chosen to stay secure while moving. If you are buying for a daughter's arangetram, plated silver or imitation sets are a common, practical choice because they are lighter and are often worn only a few times.

Price, making charges and buying tips

Temple jewellery involves extensive handwork, so making charges are usually higher than for machine-made pieces. Compare quotes as a total price per gram including making and stones, and ask whether stones are weighed separately.

Ask about exchange and buyback, since policies on heavily worked pieces and on stone weight deduction vary by jeweller. Keep detailed invoices that list gross weight, net gold weight and stone weight.

Lightweight temple designs, sometimes hollow, offer the look for less gold, but are more delicate. Solid pieces are heavier but sturdier and better as heirlooms.

If you are commissioning a custom temple piece from a family jeweller, agree in writing on the design, approximate weight, purity, stone type, making charge and delivery date. Ask to see the piece at a mid-stage, and confirm that the finished jewellery will be hallmarked before delivery.

Caring for temple jewellery

Store each piece separately wrapped in soft cotton or in a velvet-lined box, away from humidity. Silica gel packets in the box help in coastal climates.

Avoid water, perfume, hairspray and chemicals, which can dull the gold and loosen stones. After wearing, wipe gently with a soft dry cloth. For deep cleaning, take pieces to a jeweller rather than soaking them at home.

Have stones, hooks and threads checked before major functions. Many heavy necklaces are strung on thread or have hooks that wear over years of use.

Avoid storing temple jewellery in plastic bags for long periods, as trapped moisture can tarnish the gold alloy and damage threads. Breathable cotton pouches inside a closed box work better.
