Travelling with fine jewellery abroad: the essentials
Travelling with fine jewellery abroad comes down to three things: keep it on you or in your carry-on, never in checked luggage; carry proof of ownership such as invoices and hallmark or certificate details; and check the official customs guidance of India and your destination before you fly, because rules on declaring jewellery typically vary and can change. Pack light, and leave anything you would be devastated to lose at home.
Our other posts cover what to wear on a trip and how to handle bridal sets for destination weddings. This one is about the paperwork and logistics of an international journey: leaving India, arriving somewhere else, staying in hotels and coming back through customs without stress.

Why jewellery never goes in checked baggage
Checked bags pass through many hands and machines between the check-in counter and the carousel. They can be delayed, misrouted or opened for inspection, and most airlines limit or exclude liability for valuables such as jewellery placed in checked baggage. If a bag with jewellery inside goes missing, recovering its value from the airline is unlikely; check your airline's conditions of carriage to see exactly what they say.
Carry-on bags stay with you. Put jewellery in a small zipped pouch or a compact travel case inside your handbag or cabin bag, and keep that bag under the seat in front rather than in the overhead locker where possible. At security screening, jewellery may need to go through the scanner tray. Keep your eyes on the tray, place the pouch inside your bag rather than loose, and collect it straight away.
Wearing a few pieces is also an option, but airport security may ask you to remove larger metal items, so simple pieces travel more smoothly than heavy necklaces or multiple bangles.
Customs on the way out: documenting what you leave with
One of the biggest worries Indian travellers have is being questioned on return about jewellery they actually took with them from India. Customs authorities may want to know whether gold or diamond jewellery was bought abroad, which can attract duty above certain allowances, or whether it is your own jewellery being brought back.
Indian customs has a procedure through which travellers can declare valuable items when departing so that there is a record when they return. The exact name of the form, the process and whether it applies to your situation should be confirmed on the official Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs website or at the customs desk at your departure airport, because procedures are updated from time to time. If you are carrying significant gold or diamond jewellery, arriving early enough to complete any such formalities is sensible.
Even where formal declaration is not required, carrying clear documents showing the pieces are yours, bought in India, makes any conversation with officers much easier.
Which documents to carry
Original purchase invoices are the most useful proof. A GST invoice from a jeweller typically lists the item, weight, purity and price. For hallmarked gold, note the HUID codes; the BIS CARE app can be used to look up HUID details, which helps show a piece is genuine Indian-hallmarked gold. For diamond jewellery, carry or photograph the grading report from laboratories such as IGI, GIA or SGL if one was issued.
Keep photocopies or clear photographs of every document, and store digital copies in an email or cloud folder you can reach from your phone. Take photographs of each piece on a plain background, ideally next to a ruler, so you can describe it accurately if it is lost or questioned. If a piece was inherited and has no invoice, a recent valuation certificate from a reputable jeweller can help, though how much weight officers give it may vary.
Organise documents in one envelope inside your carry-on, separate from the jewellery itself. That way, if the pouch is lost, the proof is not lost with it.
Arriving at your destination
Every country has its own rules for what visitors may bring in without declaration. Some treat personal jewellery that you wear and take back as personal effects; others set value thresholds above which items must be declared on arrival. These rules typically vary widely, so read the official customs authority website of your destination before you travel rather than relying on forum posts or a friend's experience.
If you are unsure whether something needs declaring, use the red or declaration channel and ask. Declaring an item that turns out to be exempt costs a few minutes; failing to declare something that should have been declared can lead to penalties or confiscation. Keep your invoices handy rather than buried in a suitcase so you can show them if asked.
For transit stops, check whether you will clear customs at the transit airport. Some itineraries require you to collect bags and re-enter, which means passing through that country's customs as well.
Hotels, safes and day-to-day security
At the hotel, use the in-room safe for anything you are not wearing, and set your own code rather than leaving the default. For very valuable pieces, ask whether the front desk has a safe deposit facility, which is often more secure than an in-room safe. Never leave jewellery on the bedside table, the bathroom counter or inside a pillowcase, where it can be swept up with laundry.
When you go out, wear pieces that suit the setting. A diamond tennis bracelet at a formal dinner draws less attention than one on a crowded metro or a busy market. In many cities, pickpockets target visible chains and handbags, so tuck a necklace under your collar when walking through busy areas and keep your bag zipped and in front of you.
A slim travel case with separate compartments helps you see at a glance that everything is accounted for each night, which is the simplest habit for not losing a single earring in a foreign hotel room.
Insurance before an international trip
Travel insurance policies often have low limits for valuables, or exclude jewellery altogether unless it is specifically listed. Read the policy wording, not just the summary. If you own a standalone jewellery policy or a home contents policy that covers jewellery, check whether the cover extends outside India, for how long, and what documents the insurer would need for a claim made from abroad. Terms typically vary by insurer, so ask before you travel. Our separate insurance basics guide explains the types of cover.
If a piece is lost or stolen abroad, report it to local police promptly and get a written report or reference number. Insurers usually require this, and it also supports any explanation you need to give customs on your return.
It is worth thinking about what you would actually lose if the worst happened. Sentimental pieces, such as a grandmother's necklace or your wedding mangalsutra, cannot be replaced by any payout. For those, the best protection is often to leave them at home and travel with newer, well-documented pieces whose value is recorded and whose loss, while painful, would be manageable.
If you do take sentimental jewellery, for example to a family function overseas, decide in advance where it will be at each stage of the trip: on you during the flight, in the hotel safe deposit box between events, and back in your carry-on for the journey home. A simple written plan avoids last-minute packing mistakes. Share that plan with whoever is travelling with you, so two people know where every piece should be. On check-out day, open the safe and count each item against your photographs before handing back the key card, because jewellery forgotten in a hotel safe is one of the most common and most avoidable travel losses.
Coming home and a final packing checklist
On your return to India, be ready to show that the jewellery you are carrying left with you, using your departure records, invoices and photographs. If you bought jewellery abroad, keep that invoice separately and check current Indian duty-free allowances and declaration rules on the official customs website before you land, since these are revised periodically.
Before you leave, run through a short checklist: pieces chosen and photographed; invoices, HUID details and certificates copied; any departure declaration completed; jewellery packed in your carry-on; hotel safe plan in mind; and insurance cover confirmed. Travelling with fewer, well-documented pieces is almost always easier than travelling with everything.
