Uncut diamond jewellery at a glance
Uncut diamond jewellery uses natural diamonds that are only lightly shaped, so they keep a flat, irregular outline and a soft glow. To buy it well, judge the stones' size, transparency and evenness, the gold quality and the craftsmanship of the setting and enamel, and insist on documentation of stone weight, because uncut diamonds are not graded like faceted ones.
In India uncut diamonds are usually called polki, and they have been prized since Mughal times for their antique beauty. Today they appear in bridal necklaces, chandbalis, maang tikkas, cocktail rings and even minimal everyday studs. The challenge for a buyer is that uncut stones do not come with neat grading reports in the way a solitaire does, so you need to rely more on your own eye and a trustworthy jeweller.
This guide explains how uncut diamonds are evaluated, what drives price, how to read the documentation and how to wear and care for the pieces.

How uncut diamonds are evaluated
Size and weight come first. Larger polki slices are rarer and costlier. Next is transparency: better stones are clearer, letting the foil behind them glow through evenly, while cloudier stones look milky or grey. Colour matters too, with whiter stones generally commanding higher prices, though some buyers love the warmth of slightly tinted polki.
Look at evenness and shape. Well matched stones of similar thickness and outline create a harmonious design, especially in necklaces where dozens of polkis sit side by side. Inclusions, like black spots, are more visible in uncut stones than in brilliant cut diamonds because there are fewer facets to hide them. Examine the piece in natural light, turning it slowly, and compare two or three pieces side by side.
Do not overlook the craftsmanship around the stones. The kundan gold should be neat and evenly pressed, with no gaps, glue or lifted edges. Enamel on the reverse should be smooth, with clean colour boundaries and no chips. Pearl and bead drops should be strung on strong thread or wire and hang evenly. These details separate a piece made by skilled karigars from a hurried one, and they affect both durability and future value.
Foiled and open settings
Traditional polki is set with a reflective gold or silver foil behind the stone, enclosed in kundan gold so the back of the stone cannot be seen. The foil gives the diamond a warm, even glow and can make modest stones look richer. The trade-off is that the stone cannot be inspected from behind, and the foil can be harmed by moisture.
Open or jadau-free settings, sometimes called open polki, leave the back of the stone visible, letting light pass through. These are popular in contemporary designs and require better quality, more transparent stones because there is nothing to enhance them. If you value being able to see what you are buying, open settings give more transparency, literally and figuratively.
Neither style is better in absolute terms. Foiled polki suits bridal and heritage designs where warmth and richness matter most, and it is traditionally how Rajasthani and Hyderabadi pieces were made. Open polki suits lighter, modern pieces that you may want to wear with western outfits or for daytime events. If you are buying for an heirloom, foiled work carries more tradition; if you want to wear the piece often, open settings are easier to clean and inspect.
What drives the price of uncut diamond jewellery
The price is typically made up of the total weight and quality of the polki, any cut diamonds, coloured gemstones and pearls, the gold weight and purity, the making charges for kundan setting and meenakari work, and GST. Handcrafted pieces with fine enamel on the reverse involve many artisan hours and can carry substantial making charges.
Ask for each element to be itemised: polki carat weight, cut diamond carat weight, gold weight and purity, and making charges. Without that breakdown it is impossible to compare two pieces fairly. Uncut diamond jewellery from established jewellers can start from around ₹30,000 for small earrings and climb steeply for bridal necklaces, depending entirely on these components.
Documentation and buying safely
Since uncut stones are not graded on standard scales, documentation is crucial. Reputable jewellers provide an invoice stating the polki weight, cut diamond weight, gold purity and weight, and, for many pieces, a certificate from a laboratory or the jeweller's own declaration confirming the stones are natural diamond. Gold content should be BIS hallmarked with a HUID code verifiable on the BIS Care app.
Ask about exchange and buyback in writing. Policies on polki typically vary by seller and may value stones differently from cut diamonds. Be cautious of pieces described vaguely as polki look, polki style or kundan without stone details, which usually indicate glass or synthetic stones. Those can be lovely costume jewellery, but they should be priced accordingly.
Modern ways to wear uncut diamonds
Uncut diamonds are not only for brides. Small polki studs, slim polki bangles and single polki pendants on a fine chain bring heritage character to everyday kurtas and even white shirts. A polki cocktail ring pairs well with western dresses for an interesting contrast. Lightweight polki chokers suit festive office events and family functions.
For weddings, polki shines alongside heavy silk sarees, velvet lehengas and rich jewel tones like emerald, ruby and deep maroon, where it looks naturally regal. Pair polki with pearls or emerald beads for a classic Rajasthani look, or with cut diamond borders for a brighter, contemporary feel. Keep the rest of the look simple so the uncut stones take centre stage.
Care, cleaning and storage
Never soak polki or kundan pieces. Water can seep behind the stones, tarnishing the foil and dulling the glow, and harsh chemicals can damage enamel. After wearing, wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. Apply perfume and hairspray before putting on your jewellery and take it off before sleeping or bathing.
Store each piece in a soft pouch or individual compartment, flat, with silica gel sachets in humid cities like Mumbai, Chennai or Kolkata. Avoid stacking necklaces on top of each other. If stones become loose or the foil looks dark, take the piece to a skilled kundan karigar or the original jeweller rather than attempting a home fix.
Uncut diamonds in rings, studs and pendants
Necklaces get most of the attention, but smaller uncut diamond pieces are where many women start. A single polki stud, bezel set in gold with a thin enamel border, brings heritage character to an otherwise simple outfit and costs a fraction of a set. Because the stone is flat, it sits close to the earlobe and does not catch on hair or dupattas, making it surprisingly practical.
Polki rings, often a large central slice surrounded by tiny cut diamonds or a ring of enamel, work as cocktail rings with western dresses and as festive rings with lehengas. Look at the underside to see whether the shank is comfortable and whether the setting is low enough not to snag. For pendants, a single polki on a fine yellow gold chain is an elegant way to wear an heirloom style every day, and it layers well with a mangalsutra or a plain chain.
With smaller pieces, the quality of the individual stone becomes more visible, so it is worth choosing a cleaner, more transparent polki even if it is slightly smaller. One good stone always looks better than a larger cloudy one, especially when it sits alone.
Is uncut diamond jewellery right for you?
Choose uncut diamonds if you love traditional, antique-inspired jewellery with soft glow and craftsmanship, and if you plan to wear the pieces at weddings and festivals over many years. They make meaningful heirlooms and can be reset into new designs later, since the stones themselves are durable.
If you prefer bright sparkle, frequent everyday wear and easy cleaning, cut diamond jewellery may suit you better. Many women own both: a polki set for occasions and a few cut diamond pieces for daily life. Whatever you choose, buy from a jeweller who explains the components clearly and puts the details in writing.
