Why lab-grown diamond prices vary: the short version
Lab-grown diamond prices vary because two stones that sound alike on paper can differ in cut precision, true colour, clarity type, laboratory, treatment and shape, and because finished jewellery adds metal, making charges, brand and after-sales policies on top. Compare quotes line by line, not by headline price, and you will usually find the reason for the gap.
It is common for Indian shoppers to see what looks like the same one-carat lab-grown solitaire listed at very different prices across a marketplace, a brand website and a local jeweller. That spread is confusing, and it tempts buyers either to grab the cheapest option or to assume the most expensive must be best. Neither shortcut works reliably.
This guide breaks down every factor that moves the price, explains which ones affect what you actually see on your hand, and gives you a simple method for comparing quotes so you pay for quality rather than for marketing.
Keep a notebook or a phone note open as you read. By the end you will have a checklist of questions that makes any seller's quote easy to decode.

Cut quality: the biggest hidden variable
For round brilliants, independent labs give a cut grade, and excellent or ideal cuts command higher prices because they need more precise cutting and often waste more rough. A poorly cut stone can look smaller, darker or glassy even with great colour and clarity, which is why it sells for less.
For fancy shapes like ovals, pears, marquises, cushions and emeralds, most reports do not give an overall cut grade. Here, price differences often reflect proportions, symmetry and how much visible bow-tie or dark area a stone shows. Two ovals with the same carat, colour and clarity can differ visibly in brightness.
Spread is another factor. A stone cut too deep hides weight in its belly and looks smaller from the top, while a well-proportioned stone faces up larger. Sellers sometimes price by carat alone, so a well-spread stone can be a better deal even at a slightly higher price.
Ask for the stone's measurements in millimetres, the table and depth percentages and a video. These tell you far more about value than carat weight alone.
Colour, clarity and the type of inclusion
Colour and clarity grades obviously affect price, with D to F colour and VVS clarity at the top. But within a grade, the type and location of inclusions matter. A VS2 stone with a tiny pinpoint near the edge looks cleaner than a VS2 with a dark crystal under the table, yet both carry the same grade.
Lab-grown stones may also carry subtle tints that grades describe only partly. Some CVD stones show a faint brown or grey undertone, and some HPHT stones a faint blue. Stones with no visible tint can be priced higher by careful sellers.
Fluorescence can affect price too. Strong fluorescence is sometimes discounted because, in rare cases, it can make a stone look slightly hazy in sunlight, though many stones with fluorescence look perfectly fine.
The takeaway is that grade is a range, not a pinpoint. Look at the actual stone through photos or in person to see whether the price reflects what you see.
Which laboratory graded it
Laboratories differ in strictness and reputation, and the market prices that in. A stone graded by a lab perceived as stricter may cost more than one with the same grades from a lab perceived as more lenient. Labs such as GIA, IGI and SGL are widely used for lab-grown stones in India, and each has its own reputation among traders.
Stones with only a seller's in-house certificate are usually cheaper, and their grades should be treated with caution. They may be accurate, but you have no independent check.
Some cheaper listings mention certification without giving a report number. Without a verifiable number, the certification adds little value. Always confirm the report online.
When comparing quotes, compare stones graded by the same laboratory whenever possible, so you are not mixing different grading standards.
Treatment, growth method and as-grown stones
Many CVD stones receive post-growth treatment to improve colour, and reports usually note this. As-grown stones, with no treatment detected, are sometimes priced slightly higher by sellers who market them to buyers who prefer untreated material.
Growth method itself does not set a fixed price premium. CVD and HPHT stones of the same quality can be priced similarly, but supply in particular sizes and shapes can tilt the market one way at a given time.
Read the comments section of the report to see whether treatment is mentioned, and factor your own preference into what you are willing to pay.
For most buyers, a disclosed treated stone that looks beautiful is excellent value; for others, untreated material is worth a premium. Both choices are reasonable.
Shape, size thresholds and demand
Round brilliants are usually the most expensive shape per carat because cutting a round from rough wastes more material and demand is high. Ovals, pears and cushions often offer more visible size for the money, though popular shapes can see temporary price bumps when trends shift.
Size thresholds matter. Stones at exactly one carat or two carats are priced higher than those just below, because buyers like round numbers. A 0.95-carat stone can look almost identical to a 1.00-carat at a lower price.
Very large lab-grown stones and matched pairs for earrings carry extra premiums, because matching two stones for colour, clarity and size takes effort.
If you are flexible on shape and exact weight, you can often find better value than a buyer fixed on a one-carat round.
Metal, making charges and GST
In finished jewellery, metal can be a large share of the cost. A solitaire in 18K gold costs more than the same stone in 14K gold or silver, and heavier settings add more. Check gross weight, net metal weight and purity on the listing or invoice.
Making charges vary widely. Some jewellers charge a percentage of metal value, others per gram or a flat fee, and intricate designs cost more. A low stone price can be offset by high making charges, so ask for a breakdown.
GST applies to jewellery in India and is calculated on the total value including making charges. Make sure quotes are compared on the same tax-inclusive basis.
Platinum settings have their own pricing and making costs, often higher than gold because platinum is denser and harder to work with.
Brand, service and policies
Branded jewellers often charge more for design, store experience, warranties and after-sales service such as free cleaning, resizing and prong checks. Some offer lifetime exchange or upgrade policies that add real value if you plan to upgrade.
Online-only sellers may price lower by cutting retail overheads, while marketplace sellers vary from established brands to small workshops. Reviews, return windows and documentation quality matter as much as price.
Return policy is a value factor too. A generous return window lets you inspect the piece in person and get a second opinion. A no-return policy on a high-value item is a reason to be cautious.
Decide which services you will actually use, and do not overpay for policies you will never need.
A simple method for comparing quotes
List each quote with stone carat, shape, colour, clarity, cut or proportions, lab and report number, treatment, metal purity and net weight, making charges, GST, return window and exchange terms. Highlight any missing field and ask the seller to fill it in.
Verify every report number online, and request videos of the actual stones in daylight. Compare stones from the same lab where possible.
Once the variables line up, the price difference usually makes sense. If one quote is much lower with no explanation, ask why before you buy. If one is much higher, ask what you get for it.
This method takes a little effort but almost always saves money and regret. It also helps you spot the rare listing that is genuinely good value.
Save your comparison notes, too. They become useful again when you buy matching earrings or an anniversary band later.
