Why a backpack beats a trolley in Gokarna

Gokarna is a temple town on the Karnataka coast, with a quiet main street, the Mahabaleshwar Temple and a beach right in town. The beaches beyond are reached by short drives and then steep paths, or by the popular beach trek that runs from Gokarna Beach to Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise. The trek involves rocky headlands, sandy stretches and uneven steps.

The beach trek: what to carry

For the trek from Gokarna to Paradise Beach, start early to avoid the midday heat. Carry two litres of water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat and a dry bag for your phone. If you are moving between beach stays, your backpack goes with you; pack it well, with heavy items close to your back.

Some travellers take boats between beaches to skip the hottest stretches. Keep electronics in waterproof pouches, as boats can be splashy.

Taking a wheeled suitcase is the most common mistake; you will end up carrying it over rocks and sand. Others include wearing flip-flops on the beach trek, not carrying enough water, forgetting cash, and packing only revealing beachwear with nothing modest for the temple town.

Some travellers overpack electronics and valuables. Keep your gear simple and lock valuables in your guesthouse when possible.

Another mistake is treating Gokarna as a party town. It is a pilgrimage centre first, and locals appreciate visitors who dress modestly in town and around the temples, saving swimwear for the beaches.
