How to pack a coat in a suitcase, by coat type
To pack a coat in a suitcase, match the method to the coat: fold a wool coat lining-out in half lengthwise with the shoulders tucked into each other and lay it flat on top; compress a down puffer into a stuff sack or roll-up bag; and fold a trench coat like a blazer with tissue along the folds. If you can, wear the bulkiest coat on the plane, which saves the most space of all.
Coats are the bulkiest items most travellers carry, especially on winter trips to Europe, Japan, Kashmir or Ladakh. Packing them well can be the difference between a cabin bag and a checked case.

Wear it or pack it?
In most cases, wear your heaviest coat on the plane. It takes up no suitcase space and adds no checked weight. On board, fold it lining-out and place it on top of your bag in the overhead bin, or use it as a blanket. Take it off before security to make the check faster.
Pack the coat when you are flying from a hot city, such as Mumbai or Chennai, and do not want to carry it through the airport, or when you are bringing two coats. In that case, the heavier coat is worn and the lighter one packed.
Think about arrival too. If you are landing in Zurich or Srinagar in winter, you need the coat the moment you step out of the airport. Packing it in a checked bag means standing in the cold while you wait for the carousel and open the case. Wear it, or at least carry it on board.
Packing a wool or tailored coat
Empty the pockets. Lay the coat face down, turn one shoulder inside out and tuck the other shoulder into it, just as you would with a blazer. Fold the coat in half lengthwise so the lining faces out. Smooth the sleeves along the body. Fold once across the middle, ideally over a rolled sweater to soften the fold.
Lay the folded coat flat at the top of a medium or large check-in case, under the compression strap. Avoid compression bags for wool coats; the pressure flattens the fibres and sets deep creases. A garment bag carried on board is the safest option for an expensive cashmere or wool coat.
For very long coats, such as a maxi wool overcoat, fold the coat in thirds instead of in half, placing a rolled item at each fold. This produces two gentle curves rather than one hard crease and fits the length of a 65 to 70 cm case.
If the coat has a belt, remove it and roll it separately, then slip it into a shoe or a handle trough. A belt left in its loops creates a hard ridge across the folded coat.
Packing a down or puffer jacket
Down and synthetic puffers compress very well. Many come with their own stuff sack; if not, roll the jacket tightly from the hem to the hood and secure it, or put it in a roll-up compression bag. A puffer that fills half a cabin trolley uncompressed can shrink to the size of a water bottle.
Do not leave a down jacket compressed for long periods. Unpack it as soon as you arrive and shake it to restore the loft. Long-term compression reduces the insulating ability of down.
Lightweight packable down jackets are ideal for trips with cold mornings and warm afternoons, such as Rajasthan in winter or a European spring. They weigh very little and pack into their own pocket, so you can carry one in a day bag and pull it out when the sun goes down.
If your puffer has a fur-trimmed hood, detach it before compressing and pack it separately in a soft pouch near the top, so the fur is not crushed flat.
Packing a trench or raincoat
Trench coats are lighter than wool coats and fold like a long blazer. Button the coat, turn it face down, fold the sleeves in, fold it lengthwise in thirds and then in half, with tissue at the fold. Lay it flat on top of your clothes.
Raincoats and lightweight shells roll into compact tubes or fold into their own pocket. They are ideal for monsoon trips or the unpredictable weather of London and Edinburgh.
A trench coat is one of the most versatile travel layers for city breaks. It works over a dress, a jumpsuit or jeans, and handles light rain without looking sporty. Choose one in a neutral such as beige, navy or olive that suits your capsule wardrobe.
For the monsoon in India, a lightweight packable raincoat or poncho in a day bag is more practical than an umbrella on crowded streets in Mumbai or narrow lanes in Old Goa.
Where to place a coat in the case
Coats belong at the top of the case, where pressure is lowest, unless they are compressed puffers, which can go in the base. Keep wool coats away from shoes, velcro and anything that could snag the fibres.
In a 50:50 clamshell, lay the coat flat in the lid half under the zip divider. In a duffle, fold the coat and lay it across the top of packing cubes.
If you are packing more than one coat, put the heavier coat lower in the case and the lighter one on top. Two folded coats stacked directly on top of each other can crush the lower one; separate them with a layer of folded clothes.
A wool coat folded in a hard-shell case benefits from a zip divider panel above it, which acts like a press and keeps the fold neat for the whole journey.
Packing a coat in a carry-on
A wool coat takes up a large part of a cabin trolley, which is why wearing it is usually better. A lightweight puffer in a stuff sack fits easily. If you must pack a wool coat in a cabin bag, fold it as described and plan the rest of your wardrobe around compact items.
Cabin weight limits are often tight, typically around 7 kg on Indian domestic routes; a heavy wool coat can weigh well over a kilogram. Wearing it on board avoids the problem; check your airline's current rules.
Most airlines allow you to carry a coat on board in addition to your cabin bag, but practice varies, especially on low-cost carriers with strict personal item rules. Check your airline's policy, and if in doubt, wear the coat through the gate.
If you are flying cabin-only on a winter trip, choose your coat with packing in mind: a long packable down coat or a quilted jacket compresses far better than a heavy wool overcoat, while still keeping you warm on a cold European street.
Caring for coats on the trip
Hang coats as soon as you arrive on a sturdy hanger with shaped shoulders. Let wool coats breathe overnight. Brush off dust and lint with a clothes brush. If a coat gets wet in the rain or snow, hang it to dry naturally away from heaters.
For down jackets, shake them out every morning to redistribute the filling. Store them uncompressed at home.
Back home, have wool coats professionally cleaned at the end of the season, not after every trip. Store them on wide wooden hangers in a breathable garment bag, with cedar to deter moths, which are a real risk for wool stored in humid Indian homes.
Down jackets can usually be washed at home on a gentle cycle with a down-specific detergent, then tumble dried on low with a couple of tennis balls to restore loft; follow the care label.
Choose luggage for winter trips
Winter trips need more space than summer ones. A medium or large check-in case with a flat interior and strong compression straps handles coats and boots well. A garment bag or a business case with a suiter section protects tailored coats.

For a two-week winter trip, a medium case of around 65 to 70 cm usually holds a packed coat, boots, thermals and a capsule wardrobe. A large case is needed only if you are travelling with several bulky coats or packing for a family.
