Kashmir honeymoon packing list in brief
For a Kashmir honeymoon, pack warm layers suited to the season, thermals in winter, a waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes or snow boots, a few pretty outfits for photos in Gulmarg and on Dal Lake, sunscreen and lip balm for high altitude, and medicines. A medium 65 to 69 cm hard-shell spinner each plus a backpack handles road transfers between Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
Kashmir is one of India's most romantic honeymoon destinations, with houseboats on Dal Lake, snow in Gulmarg and meadows in Pahalgam. Weather varies dramatically between seasons and even within a single day.
Packing well means preparing for cold mornings, sunny afternoons, sudden rain and, in winter, snow. Here is a season-by-season guide and the luggage that copes best with Kashmir's roads.
The good news is that layering is efficient. Instead of packing a separate heavy outfit for every day, you can rotate a few warm base layers and jackets and change tops, scarves and accessories to create different looks in photos.

Packing for winter in Kashmir (December to February)
Winter in Kashmir is cold, especially in Gulmarg and Sonamarg, where snow is common. Pack thermal innerwear, fleece or woollen layers, a heavy down or padded jacket, woollen socks, gloves, a beanie and a scarf. Waterproof snow boots with good grip are essential; you can also rent boots and snow gear locally in Gulmarg.
For photos, add a coloured long coat or a pheran, the traditional Kashmiri cloak, which many couples buy locally. Bright jackets and scarves stand out beautifully against snow.
Keep moisturiser, lip balm and sunscreen handy, as the cold and sun reflection off snow can dry and burn skin quickly.
If you plan to try skiing or snowboarding in Gulmarg, pack waterproof trousers, moisture-wicking base layers and a neck gaiter. Equipment and instructors are available locally, but your own base layers and gloves make the experience far more comfortable. Keep a dry change of socks in your backpack, as snow often finds its way into boots.
Packing for spring and summer (March to August)
Spring brings tulips and mild temperatures, while summer is pleasant in the valleys with cool evenings. Pack light layers: long-sleeved tops, a light sweater or cardigan, a denim or windproof jacket, comfortable trousers and dresses for photos in the meadows.
Rain showers can occur, so carry a compact umbrella or a light rain jacket. Comfortable sneakers are ideal for walks in Pahalgam and Sonamarg, and pony rides to viewpoints.
Higher altitudes like Sonamarg or the Thajiwas glacier can still be chilly even in summer, so keep a warm layer in your day backpack.
Packing for autumn (September to November)
Autumn in Kashmir is famous for golden chinar trees and crisp air. Days are pleasant, but nights get cold, especially in November. Pack warm sweaters, a medium-weight jacket, scarves and closed shoes.
Earthy and jewel-toned outfits like mustard, rust, maroon and forest green photograph beautifully against autumn foliage. A long dress with a sweater or coat looks elegant for photos at Mughal gardens.
Late autumn can bring early snow at higher altitudes, so check the forecast before you go and pack an extra warm layer just in case.
Luggage for Kashmir's roads and houseboats
Most Kashmir itineraries involve road travel between Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg. Roads can be winding and bumpy, and luggage is loaded into car boots repeatedly. Hard-shell polycarbonate spinners protect clothes and withstand handling. Medium 65 to 69 cm cases are easier to lift than large ones.
Houseboats on Dal Lake are reached by shikara, small boats where luggage is handed across. Compact bags with strong handles are easier to transfer. Keep valuables in a crossbody or backpack that stays with you during the shikara ride.
A backpack or weekender is ideal for day trips. Pack it with layers, water, snacks, sunscreen, a power bank and a camera.
Most visitors fly into Srinagar on domestic airlines, where economy fares typically include around 15 kg of checked baggage. Winter clothing is heavy, so wear your bulkiest jacket and boots on the flight and pack lighter layers in the suitcase. Security checks at Srinagar airport can be thorough, so arrive early and keep electronics easy to remove.
Health and comfort essentials
Pack moisturiser, lip balm, sunscreen, hand cream and a hydrating face mist, as the air can be dry. Add basic medicines: painkillers, antacids, cold and flu remedies, motion sickness tablets for winding roads and any prescriptions.
Higher-altitude destinations like Gulmarg's Phase 2 gondola point can cause mild breathlessness; take it slow and stay hydrated. A reusable water bottle and snacks are useful on long drives.
Bring a power bank, as cold weather drains phone batteries faster, and keep gadgets inside your jacket in winter.
Use packing cubes to separate layers by type, such as thermals, sweaters and photo outfits, so you can find the right piece quickly in a dim houseboat or hotel room. A small laundry bag keeps damp snow-soaked socks and gloves away from clean clothes until they can dry overnight near a heater.
Outfits for houseboats, gardens and photoshoots
A stay on a Dal Lake houseboat is often the highlight of a Kashmir honeymoon. Evenings on the boat can be cold even in spring and autumn, so pack cosy loungewear, a warm shawl and socks. For a shikara ride at sunset, many couples dress up a little: a flowing dress or suit with a long coat, or a light saree with a warm shawl, looks lovely against the water and mountains.
The Mughal gardens such as Shalimar and Nishat, the tulip garden in spring and the meadows of Pahalgam all make beautiful photo locations. Bright colours like red, yellow, emerald and royal blue stand out against green landscapes and snow alike. Carry one photo outfit per main location and keep it folded at the top of your day backpack so you can change at the hotel before heading out.
Many couples hire traditional Kashmiri outfits for photos at Dal Lake. If you plan to, keep the rest of your packing simple and practical, and focus on warm layers rather than multiple fancy outfits that will mostly stay hidden under jackets.
Pack a small first-aid kit with bandages, antiseptic, cold medicine and lip balm in your day backpack, since pharmacies may be far away on excursions to Sonamarg or Doodhpathri. Couples travelling in winter should also carry hand warmers, which are light and take almost no space.
Kashmir packing mistakes to avoid
The biggest mistake is underestimating the cold, especially in early spring and late autumn, when the days look sunny but evenings drop sharply. Pack at least one more warm layer than you think you need. The second mistake is wearing fashion boots with smooth soles in snow or on wet paths; they are slippery and uncomfortable. Choose boots or sneakers with a good grip.
Another common mistake is overpacking and choosing a large suitcase that is difficult to lift into taxis and onto shikaras. Kashmir itineraries involve frequent hotel changes and road transfers, so a medium case and a backpack per person is far more manageable. Pack layers rather than separate outfits for every day; you will rewear jackets and sweaters, so focus your variety on scarves and tops.
Finally, do not forget documents and cash. Connectivity and card acceptance can be patchy in some places, so keep printed bookings, some cash and your ID handy at all times.
Keep a small zip pouch for permits, gondola tickets and hotel vouchers in your day backpack, so you are not digging through the main suitcase at checkpoints or ticket counters.
Documents and connectivity
Carry government ID, hotel bookings and travel insurance. Prepaid mobile connections from other states may not work in Jammu and Kashmir; postpaid connections generally do. Check with your network provider before travel.
Keep printed copies of bookings and important contacts in case of patchy connectivity. Carry some cash for local purchases, shikara rides and tips, as card acceptance may be limited in smaller places.
Book Gulmarg gondola tickets in advance during peak season, and keep confirmations accessible.
