For a Sri Lanka trip, a medium soft duffle or a 60 to 65 cm spinner plus a day backpack is ideal. Most itineraries are road trips with a driver, covering Colombo, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala and the south coast beaches, plus the famous Kandy to Ella train, where luggage space is limited.

Sri Lanka is a short flight from Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi, making it a perfect first international trip or a quick honeymoon. Allowances vary between airlines, so check your fare.

Pack for multiple climates: humid beaches, cool hill country and dusty safaris.

A popular seven to ten day Sri Lanka loop starts in Colombo or Negombo, heads to Sigiriya and Dambulla in the Cultural Triangle, continues to Kandy, takes the train to Ella through Nuwara Eliya, then drops to Yala for a safari and ends on the south coast at Mirissa, Galle or Bentota. That means five or six hotels in a little over a week, and a driver's car boot that fills quickly if each person brings a large suitcase.

Hill country layers

Nuwara Eliya and Ella are cool, especially at night. Pack a fleece, a light jacket and full-length trousers.

Hill country temperatures can drop significantly at night, especially in Nuwara Eliya, which sits at a high altitude. Many colonial-era bungalows and tea estate hotels have fireplaces and no air conditioning, which tells you how cool it can get. Pack warm sleepwear and a cosy layer for evenings by the fire.

Tea estate photos at sunrise, with mist over the plantations, are a highlight for many travellers. A long dress in a bright colour or a saree photographs beautifully among the green tea bushes. Pack one carefully folded at the top of your bag, and wear comfortable footwear for the walk to the viewpoint.

Ella is also a base for hikes and the famous Nine Arches Bridge, where trains pass through the jungle. Paths can be muddy after rain, so carry a spare pair of socks and a plastic bag for dirty shoes in your day backpack.

Beach packing for the south coast

Mirissa, Unawatuna and Bentota beaches need swimwear, cover-ups, sandals and reef-safe sunscreen.

Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a beautiful place to walk in the late afternoon. Its cobbled lanes are lined with boutiques, cafes and colonial buildings. Also check current entry requirements, as Sri Lanka has changed its visa and electronic travel authorisation processes several times. Apply well in advance through official channels only, and keep a printed copy of your approval.
