Understanding a diamond jewellery return policy
A diamond jewellery return policy explains whether you can send a piece back for a refund, swap it for another design, or exchange it later for credit, and on what terms. In India these terms typically vary widely by seller: return windows, deductions for making charges and GST, exclusions for customised pieces and lifetime exchange percentages all differ. Read the policy before you pay, not after.
Returns and exchanges are where many buyers feel caught out, mainly because they assume all jewellers follow the same rules. They do not. Two sellers with almost identical rings can have very different policies, and that difference can be worth more than a small gap in price.
Think of the policy as part of the product. A slightly more expensive ring with a generous, clearly written policy can be the better purchase.

Returns versus exchanges versus buyback
A return usually means sending an item back within a short window after delivery for a refund. An exchange means trading the piece, often later, for credit towards another purchase from the same seller. Buyback means the seller purchases the piece back from you for money, usually at a lower percentage than exchange.
Each comes with its own conditions. Returns typically need the item unused with original packaging, tags, certificate and invoice. Exchanges and buyback usually require the original invoice and certificate, and the value depends on the current gold rate and the seller's diamond valuation method.
Because these three options are often bundled into one policy page, read each section separately and note which one you are likely to use.
The return window and its conditions
Many online jewellers offer a return window measured in days from delivery for standard designs. Within that window, you may get a full or partial refund, sometimes with shipping charges deducted. Some refunds return to the original payment method; others are given as store credit.
Conditions commonly include an intact hallmark, no resizing or damage, the original certificate and invoice, and the tamper-evident packaging or box. If you wore the piece to a function and it shows wear, the seller may refuse or reduce the refund. Check how to initiate a return, whether pickup is free, and how long refunds take.
Save screenshots of the return policy on your purchase date, because policies can change and your rights usually depend on the terms in force when you bought.
Exclusions: customised, engraved and resized pieces
Personalised pieces are frequently excluded from returns. Rings made to your size, pieces with engraved names or dates, and designs made to order with a specific stone usually cannot be returned, or only with heavy deductions. Some sellers also exclude items bought during special sales.
If you are unsure of ring size or design, ask whether a free resize or a standard-size version is available instead. Some sellers allow one free resize within a period. Confirm these details in writing before you commit to a customised order.
If you are buying a surprise gift, a standard-size ring with a free resize option is often safer than guessing a custom size that cannot be returned.
How exchange value is usually calculated
For gold, many sellers use the current gold rate and the net gold weight, sometimes minus a small deduction. For diamonds, sellers may offer a percentage of the diamond value on the invoice or of its current value. Making charges and GST are often not included in exchange value, which is why exchange credit is usually lower than the price you paid.
Lab-grown and natural diamonds may be treated very differently. Some sellers offer exchange on lab-grown pieces, and some offer buyback, but the percentage and conditions vary. Ask specifically about the stone type you are buying and request the percentages in writing. Some sellers also apply a lock-in period before exchange or buyback becomes available, or offer a better rate if you upgrade to a higher-value piece rather than cashing out.
It can help to work out an example before you buy: ask the seller what a piece like yours would fetch in exchange today, so the policy is concrete rather than abstract.
Questions to ask before you pay
Is there a return window for this exact item, and from what date does it start? Are making charges and GST refunded on return? What percentage of value do I get on exchange and on buyback, for the gold and for the diamond? Is there a minimum purchase value for an upgrade? Do I need the original box, certificate and invoice?
Also ask whether the policy applies at all stores or only to online purchases, and whether it is transferable if the jewellery is gifted. Many buyers in India gift diamond pieces on Dhanteras, birthdays and weddings, and the recipient may need to know how to exchange it later. If you are gifting, ask whether a gift receipt or a transfer of the invoice is possible, so the recipient can use the policy without awkward conversations.
Keeping the paperwork that makes policies work
Every policy depends on documentation. Keep the GST invoice, diamond certificate and any warranty or exchange card in one folder, with scanned copies in email or cloud storage. Note the certificate number and HUID of the gold piece in the same place.
If you inherit or receive a piece without paperwork, contact the seller with whatever you have, such as the brand name and approximate date of purchase; some sellers can trace orders. Without an invoice, most exchange and buyback policies become difficult to use.
It also helps to photograph the jewellery from a few angles when it arrives, including the hallmark and any visible stamp such as the brand logo or purity mark. These photos show the condition at delivery, which can matter if a return is later questioned. For solitaires, a magnified photo of the girdle inscription adds another layer of proof that the stone you return is the same one you received.
Finally, set a reminder in your phone a few days before the return window closes. Many buyers decide a piece is not quite right only after wearing it mentally with different outfits for a week, and missing the deadline by a day can turn an easy refund into a far less attractive exchange.
Making the policy part of your buying decision
When comparing two similar pieces, include the return, exchange and buyback terms in your comparison. A generous lifetime exchange can be valuable if you expect to upgrade a solitaire for a milestone anniversary. A long return window helps if you are buying online without trying on.
Finally, do not rely on verbal assurances. Ask for terms in writing, keep screenshots, and read the invoice for any printed conditions. A clear diamond jewellery return policy, plus solid paperwork, turns a stressful purchase into a confident one.
What to do if a return or exchange is refused
Sometimes a return request is declined, perhaps because the seller believes the item was worn or the request came after the window closed. Start by re-reading the policy you saved on the day of purchase, then write to customer support calmly with your order number, invoice, photos and unboxing video. Many disputes are simple misunderstandings and are resolved at this stage.
If the item arrived damaged, different from the listing, or with a certificate that does not match, the case is usually stronger, because the problem is with the product rather than a change of mind. Mention the specific mismatch, such as a different carat weight or report number, and ask for a replacement or refund in writing.
If you cannot reach a resolution, escalate using the seller's grievance officer details, which online sellers in India commonly display, or the marketplace's dispute process if you bought through one. India also offers a National Consumer Helpline and consumer commissions for unresolved complaints. Keep all communication in writing, since it becomes your record if the matter goes further.
Prevention is easier than cure. Before paying, confirm the return window, conditions and contact process, and save the policy page. A two-minute screenshot is often the most useful document in the whole dispute.
