What a diamond laser inscription is
A diamond laser inscription is a microscopic line of text etched onto the girdle, the thin outer edge of a diamond, usually showing the grading report number and sometimes the lab's name, an "LG" or "lab-grown" marking, or a personal message. It is invisible to the naked eye, does not affect the grade or sparkle, and lets you match a physical stone to its certificate.
Inscriptions became common as more diamonds entered the market with grading reports, and as lab-grown diamonds made it important to tell stones apart. Today many certified solitaires, both natural and lab-grown, are inscribed as standard. For buyers, the inscription is one of the simplest ways to make sure the stone you receive is the one described on paper.
Unlike a certificate, which can be separated from the stone, the inscription travels with the diamond wherever it goes. That makes it valuable not only at purchase but also years later, when the stone is reset, inherited or sent for repairs.

How inscriptions are made and why they are safe
A precise, low-energy laser removes a very thin layer at the surface of the girdle, creating characters only micrometres high. The process is designed not to damage the diamond, and labs usually note the inscription in the comments section of the report. Because it sits on the girdle, it is typically hidden when the stone is set, especially under prongs or a bezel.
Inscriptions do not change colour, clarity or carat grades. They are not counted as inclusions or blemishes in normal grading. A small number of buyers choose not to inscribe for personal reasons, but for most people the security and traceability benefits outweigh any downside.
Some inscriptions are so shallow that they can become harder to read after heavy wear or certain polishing, but in normal life they stay legible for a very long time. If you ever have a stone repolished, mention the inscription to the jeweller.
What you might see written on the girdle
The most common inscription is the report number, sometimes with a lab prefix. Lab-grown diamonds are often inscribed with words such as "LG", "Lab Grown" or "Laboratory Grown" alongside the number, which makes their origin clear to any future jeweller or buyer.
Some brands add their own logo or a brand-specific serial number. Many sellers also offer personal inscriptions, like initials, a wedding date or a short message, which can be a meaningful touch for an engagement ring or an anniversary gift. Personal inscriptions are usually in addition to, not instead of, the report number.
If your stone has both a report number and a brand serial, keep both details in your records. The report number links to the lab; the brand serial may link to the seller's own warranty or buyback records.
How to check a diamond laser inscription yourself
You need at least 10x magnification, though higher magnification makes it far easier. A jeweller's loupe works if you have a steady hand and good light; a jeweller's microscope or the store's inscription viewer is easier still. Tilt the stone until the girdle catches the light, then rotate slowly until the characters appear.
For online purchases, ask the seller for a magnified video or photo of the inscription before dispatch. Compare every character with the certificate number. On delivery, if you have access to a local jeweller, ask them to view it for you; many will do this for a nominal fee or free as a courtesy.
Some phone camera macro modes can also capture inscriptions, though results vary. Clean the stone first, because skin oils on the girdle can make characters difficult to read. A soft brush with mild soap and lukewarm water is usually enough for a quick clean before viewing.
Why the inscription matters for online buying
When you buy diamond jewellery online, you are relying on the seller to send the exact stone you saw. The inscription closes that gap. If the number on the girdle matches the certificate and the online verification record, you can be confident you received the graded stone.
It also helps if you ever send the jewellery back for a return, resizing or repair. Some sellers note inscriptions on their records so that the same stone comes back to you. Ask how the seller handles this, especially for exchange or buyback, which typically vary by seller.
For high-value pieces, take a photo of the inscription yourself when the parcel arrives. It adds one more piece of evidence to your records if any question ever arises.
Inscriptions, insurance and theft recovery
Insurers often ask for details that uniquely identify a stone. A certificate plus a matching inscription gives a clear description that helps establish ownership. In the unfortunate event of loss or theft, an inscription can also help identify a recovered stone.
Keep a copy of the certificate, a photo of the inscription and your tax invoice in a safe place, ideally both physically and digitally. Mention the inscription when you list the jewellery on any home or jewellery insurance policy, and check the policy's terms regarding documentation.
It is also worth recording the inscription number in the same note as your locker details or jewellery inventory, so family members can find everything easily if needed.
Can inscriptions be removed or faked?
An inscription can technically be polished off, and a fake inscription could theoretically be added to a different stone. This is why the inscription works best alongside other checks: measurements, weight and the clarity plot should all match the certificate too.
If the girdle shows signs of polishing or the inscription looks uneven, ask a trusted gemmologist to examine the stone. A missing inscription on a stone whose report says it was inscribed is a red flag. Simple cross-checks keep the inscription meaningful. Weight is especially hard to fake: a jeweller with a precise carat scale can weigh a loose stone and compare it to the report, and measurements taken with a gauge should fall within a small tolerance of the printed figures. When the inscription, weight, measurements and inclusion pattern all agree, you can be very confident the stone is the one that was graded.
Remember that a lab-grown diamond with "LG" removed from its girdle would still be detectable by laboratory instruments. Inscriptions help identification, but advanced testing remains the final word on origin.
When small diamonds are not inscribed
Melee, the small diamonds used in pavé bands, halos and tennis bracelets, are usually too tiny to inscribe and are rarely individually certified. For these, the piece's jewellery report or the seller's quality certificate describes total weight and quality range.
For larger centre stones and solitaire studs, an inscription is common and worth asking about. If a seller offers a certified solitaire without an inscription, ask whether one can be added; some labs and sellers can arrange it. It is a small step that adds real long-term security.
Whatever you buy, keep the habit of matching documents to the stone. That single habit protects you more than any one lab name or brand promise.
Diamond laser inscription and personalised gifting
Beyond security, a diamond laser inscription can be a lovely sentimental detail. Couples sometimes choose a short message, such as initials, a wedding date in numbers, or a single meaningful word, hidden on the girdle where only the wearer knows it exists. Because the text is microscopic, it stays private, unlike engraving on the inside of a band that anyone can read when the ring is removed.
Character limits are usually tight, so keep messages short, and confirm spelling carefully before approving, because an inscription cannot simply be edited later. Ask whether the personal message is added by the grading lab or by the seller, whether it changes the delivery timeline, and whether it affects the return policy. Personalised items are often non-returnable, so be sure before you say yes.
For festive gifting on occasions like Karwa Chauth, an anniversary or a milestone birthday, a hidden inscription adds meaning without changing the look of the jewellery. It also makes the stone even easier to identify in future, which is a small practical bonus on top of the emotional one.
