Why a perfume vocabulary glossary helps
A perfume vocabulary glossary turns confusing product descriptions and reviews into useful information. Once you know what words like accord, dry-down, sillage, flanker and gourmand mean, you can predict how a fragrance will smell and behave before you spend ₹5,000 or more on a bottle.
Luxury fragrance language borrows heavily from French and from the perfumer's workshop. Sales associates, brand websites and fragrance communities use these terms freely, and it is easy to nod along without knowing what they mean. This glossary groups the most important terms by theme so they are easier to remember.
You do not need to memorise everything. Bookmark this page and come back to it whenever a description or review leaves you puzzled.
It also makes you a more confident shopper, able to ask precise questions and understand the answers you receive.

Concentration terms
Parfum or extrait de parfum: the most concentrated form, often around 20 to 30 percent oil or more, usually long-lasting and close to the skin. Eau de parfum (EDP): rich and long-wearing, roughly 15 to 20 percent. Eau de toilette (EDT): lighter, roughly 5 to 15 percent, often brighter and fresher.
Eau de cologne: a light concentration, traditionally citrus and herbal, roughly 2 to 5 percent. Eau fraiche: very light, often water-heavy and refreshing. Body mist: a casual, low-concentration spray. Perfume oil and attar: fragrance in an oil base rather than alcohol, usually applied by dabbing.
Remember that these percentages are approximate and not legally fixed. Each brand decides its own formula, so treat the terms as general categories.
Concentration also changes price and bottle size. Extraits often come in smaller bottles at a higher price per ml, while colognes and eau fraiches tend to come in larger, friendlier formats. Knowing the term helps you compare value fairly across brands and sizes.
Structure terms
Notes: individual smells within a fragrance, such as bergamot, rose or vanilla. Top notes: the first impression, fading within 15 to 30 minutes. Heart or middle notes: the main character, lasting a few hours. Base notes: the deepest, longest-lasting layer, such as woods, musks, amber and resins.
Accord: a blend of several materials that creates a single new impression, like a leather accord or a sea-breeze accord. Pyramid: the visual model showing top, heart and base notes. Linear: a fragrance that smells roughly the same from start to finish rather than evolving in clear stages.
Dry-down: the final stage of a perfume on skin, when only the base remains. Opening: the first minutes after spraying. Many reviewers describe both because they can be very different.
Facet: a particular aspect of a note, such as the green facet of a tomato leaf or the honeyed facet of a tuberose. Reviewers often discuss facets to describe subtle differences between perfumes using the same ingredient.
Performance terms
Longevity: how long a perfume remains detectable on skin or fabric. Projection: how far the scent radiates from your body while you are still. Sillage: the scent trail you leave as you move, from the French word for a boat's wake.
Skin scent: a perfume that sits very close to the body, often noticed only during a hug. Beast mode: informal slang for extremely strong projection and longevity. Performance: the general term covering longevity, projection and sillage together.
Olfactory fatigue or nose blindness: your nose adapting to a smell so you stop noticing it, even though others can still smell it. This explains why many people believe their perfume has vanished when it has not.
Reviews often combine these words in shorthand, such as moderate projection, eight-hour longevity, soft sillage. Reading them together gives a fairly complete picture of how present a perfume will be in your daily life, though your own skin and climate will shift the results.
Fragrance family terms
Floral: built around flowers like rose, jasmine, tuberose or peony. White floral: specifically heady flowers such as jasmine, tuberose, gardenia and orange blossom. Fresh: citrus, green, aquatic or herbal styles that feel clean and light. Woody: dominated by sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, patchouli or oud.
Amber or oriental: warm, rich compositions with resins, vanilla, spices and balsams. Many brands now prefer amber over oriental. Gourmand: edible-smelling notes like vanilla, caramel, praline, chocolate or coffee. Chypre: a classic structure of citrus top, floral heart and mossy, patchouli base, often elegant and slightly bitter.
Fougere: a classic structure of lavender, coumarin and oakmoss, common in men's perfumery but also in unisex scents. Aquatic or marine: watery, sea-like freshness. Powdery: soft, cosmetic, often from iris, violet or heliotrope.
Brands sometimes create their own family names, such as floral woody musk or amber floral. These combine two families and tell you which notes dominate. The first word usually signals the leading character, and the second the supporting one.
Descriptive smell words
Fresh: clean, bright and airy. Green: like crushed leaves, cut stems or grass. Creamy: smooth and milky, often from sandalwood, coconut or certain florals. Powdery: soft, like face powder or a baby's skin. Resinous: thick, warm and slightly sticky, like frankincense or benzoin.
Smoky: like incense or burning wood. Leathery: like a new handbag or soft suede. Animalic: warm, intimate, slightly skin-like or musky. Indolic: a rich, sometimes slightly overripe facet of jasmine and other white flowers. Metallic, salty, mineral and ozonic describe newer, modern effects.
These words help you explain what you like to sales staff, and help you understand reviews. If you know you love creamy and dislike powdery, you can quickly narrow choices.
Other useful words include sharp, sour, sweet, bitter, dusty and soapy. Soapy often comes from aldehydes or clean musks and suits people who love freshly washed laundry. Dusty is common with iris and older-style perfumes and can feel vintage and elegant.
Ingredient and production terms
Absolute: a concentrated natural extract, often from delicate flowers, obtained with solvents. Essential oil: a natural extract usually obtained by distillation or pressing, common for citrus and herbs. Concrete: a waxy intermediate stage in producing some absolutes. Isolate: a single aroma molecule extracted from a natural material.
Synthetic or aroma molecule: an ingredient created in a lab, either identical to a natural compound or entirely new. Musks used today are mostly synthetic for ethical and stability reasons. Fixative: a material that slows evaporation and helps a fragrance last, often found in the base.
Maceration: resting a perfume after mixing so the materials blend. Reformulation: a change in a perfume's formula over time, often due to regulations or ingredient availability.
Buying and market terms
Designer: fragrances from fashion houses, typically widely available. Niche: fragrances from specialist perfume houses focused on artistry, usually with smaller distribution. Flanker: a variation of an existing fragrance, such as an Intense, Elixir or summer edition. Pillar: a brand's main, best-selling fragrance line.
Tester: a bottle for in-store demonstration, often in plain packaging. Decant: perfume transferred into a smaller vial or atomiser for sampling. Discovery set: a box of small samples from one brand. Batch code: a code on the bottle and box identifying when and where it was produced.
Dupe or inspired by: a fragrance designed to smell similar to a well-known perfume. These are different from counterfeits, which illegally copy a brand's name and packaging.
Two final terms worth knowing: niche houses often use the word composition for a perfume, and nose for the perfumer who created it. When a brand credits a perfumer by name, fragrance lovers sometimes follow that perfumer's work across different labels.
Putting the vocabulary to use
Next time you read a product page, translate it. A description like a radiant white floral with a creamy sandalwood dry-down and moderate sillage tells you it will smell of flowers like jasmine or tuberose, finish soft and woody, and be noticeable without being overwhelming.
When talking to sales associates, use a few precise words: I like fresh and green for daytime, nothing too powdery, and a woody base. You will get far better recommendations than with a vague request for something nice.
